Actually it only means ASC postseason play.  It does not include NCAA playoffs although a lot of their teams did make it to the NCAA playoffs.
Of the 12 sports in which HSU competes, only Men's golf is a "little" suspect.

The ASC has an "all-comers" Golf Championship Tourney (as opposed to basketball or soccer where the better teams are invited.  The "all-comers" applies to Cross Country and Track as well).  However, HSU golfer Kristin Martin was invited to the nationals (NCAA's) as an at-large individual so that should count.  (Last year HSU did not compete in  either Cross Country or Track and Field).

This year, the teams that made the NCAA playoffs and their Directors' Cup totals include:

75)    TLU  253.375pts
T81)   HSU  223
85)    MC  217
117)  McM  161.75
181)  UMHB  95
T212)  HPU  64
228)   UT-D 53.5
T233)  LC  50

I'm somewhat taken back that UMHB was not higher.  Didn't they do well in men's BB and softball, as well as FB?  I firmly believe that these rankings are a credit to the institutions, and their emphasis on recruiting quality kids who happen to be good athletes, as well.

Bill McCabe

Ralph, thanks for that information.  I didn't know that about TLU.

Just received a flyer in the mail from H-S U's alumni office advertising the fact that the Cowboys, for the 06 - 07 academic year, made the playoffs in every team sport.  Not living in the Abilene area, and thus being away from Abilene newspaper (which is really a daily rag for the benefit of ACU), I wasn't aware of this feat.  Does anyone know if this is actually true or not? ???

It's free and can keep you up to date.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Toby Taff

Well, it is official  I am an alumnus of both UMHB and HSU as of May (and I start my second Master's Degree a HSU in the fall).  I'm  ??? !

Congratulations!!  As my wife often asks me, "What do you intend to do when you grow up?"

Some factoids on HSU's great school year
•   All 12 teams made the postseason – this includes going past the regular season. Obviously, football made the playoffs and did not win the league. The rest of the teams went to at least the conference postseason. BTW, golf only takes the top eight teams to the ASC Championship so it is not an all-comers meet.
•   HSU had the offensive or overall West Division MVP in nine of the 10 sports that give a MVP that HSU competes in (golf does not).  They include: David Salas (MSOC), Whitney Piendak (WSOC), Virginia Aguilar (VB), Jordan Neal (FB), Zach Pickelman (MBB), Sadye Hill (SB), Michael Simpson (BSB), Ryan Waters (MT), Tracy Henington (WT).
•   HSU had 16 players named to the Academic All-District teams, the next most in the league was eight by Texas Lutheran.
•   HSU had seven teams in the NCAA postseason, a league record.
•   HSU had six ASC titles, one off its own league record.

My bad.  Thanks for the correction on the ASC change in bylaws for the Automatic Qualifier in Golf.

A note of interest to some ASC fans, a pair of former ASC players and rivals are now team mates playing for the Kouvola Indians in Division I of the Finland Professional League.

Matt Epperson from Hardin Simmons University signed a contract in April to play Wide Receiver for the Indians.

Ryan Robbins, the only Senior from Howard Payne University to make the European trip in May, signed to play for the Indians shortly after returning to the states. He spent a week back in Texas and then made the trip back to Finland.

I hope the Indians have a great season!  ;)

BELTON - Mary Hardin-Baylor's place on the college football scene has been reserved for several years. Come September, however, some experts believe the Crusaders could switch from role players to NCAA Division III national championship contenders.

My only comment on this first paragraph is how tightly is he defining contender and role player.  Do only the region champions, the teams that play in the semi-finals, count as national contenders?  The Region finalists?  The Top 10? Top 25?

Let us hope that we don't have any "we don't get no respect" comments from the CRU "lower-than-usual intelligentsia".   :)  (Knowledgable and usual CRU posters are definitely excepted.)

I think that HSU led this conference into the limelight, early in the decade, and now we (the ASC) are expected to be contending for national championship every year.

yessir

Yeah your right Ralph, i'm not a usual poster, but then again, I used to be a usual poster, just got tired of all the HSU is the greatest crap back in the day. Back when you had to spell everything correctly and use proper grammar to be able to post. Your also correct about the lack of "intelligentsia", i'm not the most inteligent person on this board. However, I did play HSU for 4 years, so I have a little experience under my belt. Like when our fans get spit on, and players fiancess get hassled at the bathrooms, or when people's grandpa's get cornered in the bathroom for wearing a UMHB shirt. How about the numerous dirty shot taken at the end of game where UMHB once again beat the old cowboy's. Unless you've been punched in the jewel's under the pile for 4 years, or have been told that all your wins against a team has been flukes, or that the refs won you the game for you. Untill then, i guess I have a little more experience than you do in the old UMHB vs. HSU rival. Well this is 2nd and last post of this year. Yall have a good one. LOL Good luck to all teams.
Walking on thin ice cuz someone lost......again.

Ralph Turner

Welcome back, yessir!  :)

The rivalry goes back to Shelton, and Keith McMillan says that he has penciled the UMHB at HSU weekend into his calendar.

Warren Thompson

UMHB and HSU ... apparently when it's Baptist v. Baptist, there's no quarter asked, none given (perhaps like what happens at their conventions?  ;)).

Bill McCabe

I love going to games at Shelton.  It is always an intense game between UMHB and HSU.  I think it is a great facility and a great place to watch a game.
