On the subject, are you and/or Keith planning any road trips this season, Pat?

Pat Coleman

Yes. :)

We'll probably talk more about them when we have tickets for more, but Keith is headed in your direction and he and I are headed to Chicagoland as well. We also have agreed in principle to two other trips but have yet to buy tickets.

Thanks for your kind words. One way or another, I'll be at the "Battle of the Valleys" come early October. If all goes to plan, I should be walking, albeit with a cane, by then.

I'd imagine that sounds and smells are an international language. Sounds like a place you never want to go to hungry!!!

Thanks. We were staying in Bethany Beach, so the EMS people took me to the Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.

i read somewhere HSU had a little more than 170 report for practice  Monday morning.  Temps were pushing 100 degrees in abilene this week.

Bill McCabe

Its no wonder UMHB and HSU continue to lead the way in football.  170 report at HSU and UMHB is expecting close to 200.  I know they all won't stay, but it is a nice pool of players to find talented football players.

hpudad

HPU has 140 report for practice.

Since Coach Redwine first year, his recruiting numbers have increased each year.  I think the 1st year was around 100, 2nd year around 120 and now 140.

It was stated last year but it holds true for this season as well...congratulations to the administration, coaches and student athletes at HSU for their scheduling.

minni

I do want to say congrats to HSU as they had 12 teams compete in the post season last year and had 9 ASC MVP honors.

Now if the football team could play more than one postseason game that would be nice too.  Should be a fun season again as normal.  Ill be interested to see how the ASC showdown between HSU and UMHB pans out this year with it being so early in the year.  And as the winner plays for the conference championship the next 5 weeks.  Oh the possibilities running through my head!!!!

Ralph Turner

McMurry had 138 players, including 96 first-year student athletes, to present on the first day.

Bill McCabe

Ralph,  that's great that McMurry has so many first year players.  A couple of years with those type of numbers will enhance the program.  Only having 42 that are not first year would concern me.  Looks like they are headed in the right direction, though.

Ralph Turner

Thanks, Bill.

I am very encouraged with the rough numbers and stats about this freshman class, but I will be cautious about statements until we see those third year numbers on retention and progress towards graduation.

I think that Coach Gray has been especially diligent about recruiting student-athletes of good academic skills and personal character.  We give lip-service those concepts, but it does impact the composition of the student body in those subsequent years.

When a student-athlete has had the chance to see where inter-collegiate athletics fits in his/her life after that first year, those student-athletes, who realize that the sport has passed them by, need to stay for the academics.  I hope that is the case for Coach Gray's program.  :)

This was sent to me yesterday

Guys,

I wanted to relate an interesting story to you.  I think you will enjoy this.

In 1965, Permian High School won their first (of many) state championship.  Five or six of those guys went   D-1 ( you  might  remember Mike Jordan at SMU, Billy Dale, Glenn Halsall at Texas etc.).  One of the guys, Mike Flynt,  went to Arkansas.  While there, his studies suffered and  he flunked out and he came to Sul Ross Univ. in Alpine.  We played ball together at Sul Ross and he was a very good linebacker.  But he got kicked out of school before his senior year for fighting.  He had a penchant for the art of pugilism and was not defeated as far as I can recollect.  He ended up being the strength coach for Texas A&M, Nebraska, and Arkansas.  He left Nebraska because one of the Cornhusker All American linemen barged into his weight room while he was putting on a weight lifting class.  Mike asked the behemoth to please wait  to work out until his class was finished but the All American refused to leave and continued to pump iron.  Mike then told him to leave  the weight room and the big jock asked who might make him leave.  Wrong question!  Mr.. Flynt commenced to put the whup-ass on him, drug him outside the weight room and finished his class.  He was summarily dismissed from UN for caving in the face of the lovely lad from Lincoln. You can see how volatile and aggressive this man has been.  I  Could not guess how many fights  he has had  ( I could tell you a few  great  stories about this guy but there is a far greater story embedded within).  Mike Flynt is just a really tough man and a bit over the edge....much like a junk yard dog.

He has been in the weight training world for some time now and made a lot of money with his invention of  the portable bow-flex machine.  He also found the  peace in his life and felt a deep seated  need to make amends to those he had wronged.  He felt he owed something to Sul Ross.

He contacted an old coaching friend, Jerry Larned (Athletic Director at McMurray College in Abilene) and asked Jerry to find out if he had athletic elgibility in college and if he could possibly use it.  The NCAA said that he did have a semester of elgibility left but he had to use it at Sul Ross.  Mike approached the stunned Sul Ross football coach and asked if he could play for the team this fall.  The coach thought him crazy but Mike is persistent.  The coach found out that Mike benches 400 lbs. and runs a 5.0 40 yard dash and Mike proved it by pumping 400 three or four reps.  The SR players were on the field and Mike asked if he could just practice with them and the coach gave him permission.  He is built like a Greek god and showed some of his speed.  Mike even sweetened the pot by telling the coach that he would buy his own uniform and would help purchase needed items if there was a need.

The coach capitulated and Mike will now start two-a-days with the team on August 12, 2007.

"Hell, he's the biggest, fastest, strongest linebacker I have," the coach stated.

The first game will be against Texas Lutheran in Seguin, Texas on September 1.  If Mike Flynt makes the team he will be the oldest player by, I believe, 18 years to play in the NCAA.  He is 59 yrs. old!

I don't doubt he will make the team.  He is driven!  He will be a great leader for those guys in the weight room and on the field.  And those young players will know what a "good lick" feels like from an old man...cause he will HIT you!  From my perspective, durability is questionable, but hell, can you believe he even wants to try??  Golf makes me sore!  The guys on the '65  Permian  team are going to charter a bus to go to see the first game ...  if he makes it.

Interesting stuff.  Just watch for it on the news.  It could be a very good sports story if it all comes to pass.
