it was really clear to me who the starter should be. Justin Feaster is the only qb that lead the team down the field and created touchdowns. There is quite the bitterness in the offense right now because everybodies projected starter Clint Bricker is not peforming at all and people dont like that Jordy and Feaster are doing much better. What was with their game plan? Same plays over and over looked like they were running the same 5 plays!!! I have also notcied in teh scrimmage and in last nights game that for some reason when clint is in the game they like to try to run the ball with him. Did these coaches forget how they got to greatness. The past 10 years they have been successful because they throw and catch the football i have never been so mad at play calling before in my life til i saw HSU run a stinking option on 4th and ten....... something has got to be figured out! HSU has tons of offensive weapons. Their recievers are big, fast, and physical and i think the only completed pass of teh first half till the last drive was shovel passes.............

700 yards of total offense for Uw-lax........ i question our secondary and their ability to make plays... time and time again it was post after post after post!

It was very very scary yesterday!

Josh and hsufollower,  I don't know how many players were lost on the defense, but UW Lacrosse is a very good football team.  If the defense struggles against Linfield, then I would start to worry.  I would think this will be a real challenge since it is on the road.  A 1-1 start would not be so bad, but 0-2 could be big trouble.

i pretty much ditto everything you said except the option on 4th and 10. Read between the lines there. Wartes obviously doesnt have the trust in Bricker to put it in his hands. He was attempting to give Carrillo a chance at picking it up. Bricker should have pitched it and let whatever happend happen. You are correct the receiving core is good and deep. Almost three deep a every position. Thats something that should be taken advantage of and i dont think it really was. Another thing i would consider is moving one of the flankers to corner. They ran 3 deep there Saturday and all three appeared to be very capable to handle the job. One of those kids could probably be able to stop a post route.

Weak Safety

Observations from Saturday:

1. UW-Lax is a great football team.
2. HSU DB's played way way way too soft.  I know these guys are good athletes, but they don't seem to be confident in their abilities yet.  They were giving way too much cushion and were getting turned around out of the receivers' breaks/cuts.  The HSU DB's weren't within 5 yards of the receivers for most of the completions (which is why the completion percentage was so high).  Early in the game, Morgan made a beautiful break on a long pass but mistimed his jump by a hair.  The ball grazed his fingertips and the receiver made a beautiful catch for the TD.  That happens when you gamble sometimes.  I'd rather get burned occasionally by playing aggressive than get picked apart all the way down the field each and every drive.
3. UW-Lax  controlled the line of scrimmage.  Plays that looked like the RB got back to the line of scrimmage were 4-5 yard gains.  Plays that looked like a tackle for a loss got back to the line of scrimmage or even gained a couple of yards.
4.  HSU had a number of poorly timed penalties (roughing the passer, running into the kicker on a missed FG).
5.  I'm not ready to push the panic button yet.  The offense will be fine when they settle on a QB.  I was encouraged by the play of our receivers.  Q looks great as usual.  The defense has plenty of athleticism, will hit you hard once they get to the ball, but seemed to be out of position most of the evening.  I have a hunch that UW-Lax is much better than most people think, even ranked at No. 6.  HSU's special teams actually seemed improved over last year.  HSU now has two weeks to prepare for Linfield, and I believe we will see a big improvement.

I'm only concerned at this point--but if there's not much improvement against Linfield on the 15th, let it be know that my finger is resting comfortably close to the panic button!   :)

I knew that LAX was a good team and I was mentally/emotionally prepared to see HSU come up short against them.  The way they lost, though (QB issues and defensive issues), certainly raised my eyebrows more than a bit.

I appreciate the game analysis very much, though.  Linfield is going to chuck it around more than LAX, so we'll see early on how much improvement has taken place, at least defensively.

In my opinion HSU defense (secondary) is in trouble! The o will put up points and can win a shoot out with anyone! The secondary has lost a lot of talent from last year! They lost all conferences players safety(Cody Deaver)and cornerback(KeKe Sims)! The other Keke corner was also a great talent along with Revada at safety! The 2 corners who are both shut down especially Sims each had another year to play but choose other things. Do anyone know why? In my opinion if they were back there non of the deep balls would have happen! They both lead the conference in pass deflections and only gave up a touchdown apeice which were one corner slip on a slant and the other missed judged a ball! Another fault I seen with the corners is the the poor tackling! The corners last year were good sound tacklers and Sims lead the team in tackles for about 5 or 6 weeks into the season! I hope those guys come back during the season lol because I think you can get by with mediocore safeties, but weak corner play can be dangerous in this leage! La.College, Miss College, Howard Payne, Sul-Ross, TLU and so on

I think one of those corners was a senior but the other is still at HSU i think its a grade eligibility issue. I still say move a receiver over and at least give him a shot. If doesnt work move him back. Happens all the time.

Give up 678 yards and it's more than just a QB controversy ...

Got two weeks to work on it!

I know this is a little off subject, but do you remember a few years ago when McMurry and HSU played Menlo College they had a big WR named Nate Jackson, he is still playing for Denver.

Josh Bowerman

I haven't checked in on Nate's progress yet this preseason, but he was hanging on with Denver as their second or third tight end as late as last season.

He, along with their QB (Amir Zamin, if I remember correctly) just killed us that night.

I think the QB played Arena Football for a time.    I think they both got hurt that year and that is why they did not go far into the playoffs.  That was a good combination!

Anybody know what happened to Matt Schumacher QB at Texas Lutheran? With Walden potentially injured I just can't forsee Bryant Villa being a suitable replacement.  There are few 5'9, 5'10" QBs that can have the success Salinas had.  And he had Trahan to throw to.  There's no excuse for Jonathon Randle to not be a beast.

At least RB Anthony Smith is a bright spot for TLU.

Why didn't Flynt make the trip?  I heard he was injured, but I also heard it could be a ploy to make sure that Sul Ross gets all the media coverage at home, rather than have it for the first time on the road.

I also heard D. Bonner called a pretty unnecessary time out late in the game, when TLU had the opportunity to get the ball with with approximately two minutes left on the clock which is plenty of time for a drive.

Anybody have an impression of Dennis Parker?  I have heard good things about the new coach... At least he doesn't laugh when his team is losing like TLU volleyball coach Tiffany Davis.

UMHB needs to come out of the chute with its "A" game on Saturday. My observation is that the Cru has been a little lackluster in its season openers the past few years. I was on hand to witness of couple of these less than inspiring openers. In '04 and '06 I was living in Oregon and watched UMHB sort of sleepwalk its way through wins over Willamette (27-15 and 42-26). The Cru had way more talent than the Bearcats but the wins were on the  sloppy side (and I know a win is a win). It was like they could never put either game away. WU sort of hung around and the Cru scored late in both contests to finally secure the wins.

In '04 opener it took the Cru two overtimes and at least one blocked extra-point to upend WU. And last year the Cru played less than inspired in its opener, giving up some big plays. Even so, they had an opportunity to win it in the wanning seconds before turning the ball over inside CNU's five and losing by 5, 15-10.

All this is observation - not criticism. The Cru cannot afford to come out of the gate slow and uninspired this week. CNU is a solid team. Here is hoping the Cru flies out of the gate fast a furious and begins the year with a convincing "W".
