While this has nothing at all to do with football, it does fit into the kinder-gentler conversation that is the current tone of the forum  :).

UP WITH THE PURPLE!
Half of the "kinder-gentler" thing is that many of us have made deliberate efforts to meet other posters and their families, including present and former players.  We have developed a new level of respect for our D3friends.  :)

Hey, CRU backers, following is a link to a story the Temple Daily Telegram did on UMHB's Quincy Daniels. He sounds like a tremendous young man:

I read the board last night and I'm almost getting the feeling that its football season with all the smiting, smoting, and ???smittenness???  going on here.  Ralph please do not dock me karma if this is incorrect usage or not even a word.  (I am not an english major nor did I take any english classes in college)

I was wondering when it was all going to start coming full swing.  And I can say it wouldn't be the same board without it.

I'm coming in a little late on the issue of the number of talented players in different ASC programs, but I think there is a difference.  While all teams do have some very talented players, I think HSU and UMHB have dominated this category for quite a while, with the exception of ETBU in 2003 and the previous 2 years or so.  They had many great athletes, but had trouble putting it together until 2003 when they beat us in overtime to go to the playoffs. >:(  (still a sore subject)

It always seemed that most teams we played had a handful of players that were talented, but you could key in on those players and develop plans to stop them.  I am speaking mostly from a defensive standpoint because that what I played and know the best.  But I know when we played HSU you couldn't do this.  We had to contend with Jordan Neal, Lance Moore, Jared May, Matt Moskosky, Will Galusha, and a FINE offensive line.  That's harder to build a gameplan around.  Concentrate on Lance Moore and the running attack, and get beat by Neal and the recievers. And vice versa.

I think this is definitely one key to to the successful programs in the ASC and in football in general, and why certain teams have been so successful...  talented players who can execute the gameplan, and depth behind those players.

More often than not, these teams will win football games.

I've read these post about UMHB and the "Swagger" and "Confidence."  Do you think that too much swagger and confidence can be bad for a team?  The Swagger and Confidence must be complemented with a dose fo Respect for your opponent.  In UMHB's game against HPU, in Brownwood, a couple of years ago I'm not sure that UMHB had any respect for HPU and may have taken them lightly.

In my opinion though UMHB has more depth than any team in the ASC.  I think other teams in the ASC have players that are as good as the players at UMHB but just not as many.  That is what gives UMHB the edge over all of the other teams in the ASC.  Also UMHB coach has been at the school since the start of the program, that has to help.

hpudad--

I think you are correct in saying that that too much confidence and not enough respect can be a bad thing.

In my definition book, which I'm sure is different than many people's, but swagger and confidence, although closely related, are different.  I think swagger is the way you hold yourself, "the way you walk the walk".   While confidence is knowing that you are good enough to beat somebody.  I think over-confidence and not giving your opponent the respect they deserve has led to the demise of many a football team.  However, I don't ever think you can have too much "swagger".  This is how you hold yourself before, during and after the game, even in a loss.  I don't think it is a cockiness.  Swagger is when a defense walks onto the field after a turnover, backed up on their own 20 yardline, and gives the offense nothing but a blocked FG or a turnover in response to send them back to the bench with their tail between their legs.  And then you do it again.

Hpudad,
You are right; the depth makes a big difference.  They keep rotating the players in and many times the 2nd team is as talented as the 1st team.   Then the speacial teams are fresh.

I do think UMHB could play with a Texas State for sure.  It was one of the Wisconsin schools, UW- La Crosse beat a ranked 1-AA South Dakota State team last year.  The finished ranked.

SRDAD

I was "smitten" by my high school english teacher, does that count?
I don't know how much Flynt will play , but i don't think he expects anybody to take it easy, the haven't in practice. Big Gideon is back, which will help too.
We are not as deep, but hopefully we can hang on:)

HSWho2007

I knew Gideon would be back. He is a difference maker. Lets roll Cru

Cru Fans -

What's your prediction for tomorrow's game.  Cru by 60 or 70 pts? ;)

ASC02

Cru wins 48-6!!!

Good luck tonight CRuALUM39!

SRDAD

48-6?? Did our offense bus break down in Brady?

headlinesman

Given the CRU defense, they will probably fare better if they DO break down in Brady.  Maybe they can break down in Llano, at least they'll get some good bar-b-que!
