-HSU game against MC coming up looking to be a big one for both teams.
-If ETBU doesn't beat SRSU, they will not be .500 under the new coach, therefor(e) no improvement from previous regime.
-HSU to coast this week.

- HSU Folks: dont count Alan Wartes out just yet,:he has proven to get the most out the boys many times. The offense will have to become the Defense, (if the D is truly weak)by keeping other teams, Like MC and UMHB off the field. Look for ball control offense, short passes, runs, high percentage plays. Maybe more boring but effective. Look for more emphasis on special teams too. They'll have to take up slack on special teams and Offense if the D is bad. But, HSU can do it. They have the Kids and Coaches that are the type you need for this type of deep understanding of how they'll have to play this conference schedule to have a chance to have a chance.
-I am not an HSU fan, but I think they have some time to be maximally prepared.

yessir

I wouldn't say HSU will be coasting any week this year.......No team should ever coast threw a week. That's how you end up losing to an inferior team such as UMHB vs. HPU and HSU vs. TLU in 2005.

Short passes and ball control might work on some teams but it wont work on UMHB. SRSU knows that for a fact. BIG plays will be the only way UMHB loses. Both Wesley loses in the playoffs were because of big plays. Linfield capitalized off big plays in the Stagg Bowl. HSU's win over UMHB in 2004 stemed from big plays, (Galusha INT for a touchdown, etc)
It's hard for a team to drive consistantly on UMHB because they are so good at causing the opposing team to make mistakes. INT's, fumbles, blown blocking assignments, etc. Whenever you see a MLB line up in the A gap and he gets through untouched, that's a blocking assignment error. There for a while last week, I thought the SRSU QB was throwing passes to UMHB players. I can't wait till Oct. 6, 2007. I've never been to Abilene as a fan. I'm kind of excited about possilby being cornered in the bathroom, or getting cussed out by some nice drunken christian young men. Sounds like a blast!! Good thing is, this year if they have foul comments to share with my wife, they can share them with me as well. I can't wait!! Good luck to all teams and fans traveling this weekend. I hope you have a safe weekend. Good luck to the CRU let's take care of business in Sequin this weekend. Drink alot of Gatorade on the way up there, it's gonna be hot. Don't blow up the Church bathrooms to bad........LOL  GO CRU!!!!

yessir,  Abilene is great.  We have never encountered rude fans or any type of hostility.  The stadium is very nice and a great place to spend an afternoon watching college football.  Hope you have a great trip.

This is my first post and probably my last but I feel like I owe Around The South readers an apology for my last column. No one is forcing me to do this. It's just the right thing to do.

I don't apologize for my opinion but for my facts being incorrect. That was irresponsible and I was trying to write by memory instead of double-checking my facts. That's a cardinal sin in journalism and the readers deserve better. I sincerely apologize for that.

My style of writing is not for everyone (it's probably not for many). I'm not a hard news guy, I stopped doing that three or four years ago and I think that this site deserves something different. Last night, I let Pat know that I would no longer be writing Around The South. These guys are fantastic and great for Division III sports and the way I write was not beneficial for their site. I greatly appreciate them letting me play a part in the site for more than a year.

Most importantly, I just wanted to offer a personal apology for my facts being incorrect. I appreciate all the feedback - positive and negative.

Well, Chris, I for one hope you will reconsider.

Mistakes happen.  You made one, owned up to it, and IMO it would be perfectly OK to move on and keep writing the column.  The ASC/SCAC deserve a writer and you have done a fine job over the last year and change.

D3football.com's not the NYT and you and the other writers should not be held to that standard.  One thing I learned in my time on the column is that no matter what I wrote, I would never make everyone happy.  Some weeks, nobody was happy!   The other thing I learned was to be harder on my alma mater than any other school in the region for exactly the reasons you discovered this week.   ;)

If you truly are stepping down, you will be missed.  Thanks for your hard work.

On the other hand, I think that D3football.com has a higher standard of journalistic/editorial integrity than the NYT, but then again, I am like James Taranto.   :D  ;)  :D

Chris, good luck in your next endeavors.

So you made a mistake and now you are going to quit?  Weak....  Stay around - I enjoyed your columns.

First, my apologies to the coaches and athletes in Southeast texas.  However trying to recruit quality talent into a D-3 program from an area known for awesome D-I and D-II quality that offer FREE tuition is tough.  This is especially true when schools that cost in the neighborhood of $25,000 a year try to recruit these athletes most can't afford that neighborhood and opt for the free tuition.

Second,  Coach Marmion, who never broke .500 in FOUR seasons, was asked to resign! Coach Meuller came in and turned the program around.  He left to be a dean of a Christian School in Ft. Worth.  He was a an AWESOME coach!  Nobody knows why he would do that unless he was specifically hired to turn the program around and then move on (which happens all the time).

Third,
TLU has been fortunate to have talent the likes of Gransberry, Bozeman, Daley,Jerry Barbie,Jason Trahan and Salinas.  However the TLU coaches have not been able to use the talent they had to the full potential these atheletes are capable of.

Yes I am very critical of a program that went through two coaches in 9 years and is on their third coach that starts off 0-3!  How many teams in the ASC have went through as many coaches in 9 years?  Now look at Coach Fred and Coach Keeling?  Two anomalies?  I think now, just two coaches who really know how to recruit and build championship teams in D-3 "non-scholarship" football.

Thanks Ralph, after I posted I knew exactly what you were talking about!!!  ::)

Thanks for your postive atitude!! It's not common to get much of that around here for HSU when they lose two games.

As for Chris Allman..........I dont know what to say because personally I didnt really like you(as a columnist).  You stated it best when you said that your style is not for everyone ;D!! Being not a crusader its hard to read a column where its always go go go go go for them and not for everyone else.  Its sad to see you go, because ULTIMATLY you did do a fine job.......but something needed to be done.  Either a change of style or a change of personal.  Unfortunalty, you've mad your decision.  Good luck Chris in everything you do!!!

TLU was not an inferior team in 2005.  They knew how to take advantage of HSU's weakness and sent UMHB to the Stagg Bowl.

Chris:

I know I will be seen as biased on your behalf, but I also hope you will reconsider. I did not agree with your conclusion at all, and I know HSU  people will never see you as anything other than a UMHB homer, but I like your style.

Everyone on here--me included some times--treats this stuff as life or death--and IT IS NOT.  And frankly, no one does so more than the HSU faithful. You did not know how brave--or more likely foolish-- you were to write what you did.

Yes, check your facts or other people will, but keep writing.

Josh Bowerman

I've read the last several posts, and am choosing not to share my opinions.

I just wanted check in to let the faithful to know that I noticed.    :-X

Chris, your apology is accepted...at least by ME!  You are a good writer...kept our interest for sure.  But a really good writer (as editor of the "South Region"), can/should write like no one can tell which team you really like, or from where you graduated.   (Sometimes hard to do!)

I also hope you don't "quit" over this little squabble...it is NOTHING compared to the world problems...so suck it up and go on with your life.  Trust me you'll have much bigger problems to deal with besides some disgruntled HSU fans!

I personally hope your resignation is NOT accepted.  Please reconsider...and keep writing...we can handle it!  :D

Any comments about LC vs HSU? Will the high power LC offense be able to score points on the road?
