Ehh, I don't think you have a leg to stand on when you're going for two in the fourth quarter, down 49.

ASC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
(Games of September 29)

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Justin Feaster, QB, So., Hardin-Simmons

Hardin-Simmons sophomore quarterback Justin Feaster (Glen Rose, TX / GRHS) completed 30 of 45 passes for 495 yards and five touchdowns and ran for another score to lead the Cowboys past previously undefeated Mississippi College 48-45 on the road. Feaster's passing yardage was the third-highest total in school history and just 38 yards short of the American Southwest Conference record. Two of his TD tosses came on third down-and-29 and fourth-and-14.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Johnnie Williams, CB, So., Sul Ross State

Sul Ross State sophomore defensive back Johnnie Williams (Hempstead, TX / HHS) had a game-high 13 tackles – six solos – and added a pass break-up in the Lobos' 34-31 double overtime league road win over Howard Payne. Williams had five more tackles that any other SRSU player and three more than any HPU player. He had four tackles in the last 7 minutes of the fourth quarter.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Michael Van Wagner, K, So., Sul Ross State

Sul Ross State sophomore kicker Michael Van Wagner (Bandera, TX / BHS) hit a game-tying 36-yard field goal with under 2 minutes left in regulation to force overtime with Howard Payne, then was good from 28 yards away for the game-winner in double overtime. Van Wager had just one FG miss, a 48-yard attempt that would have been an ASC-long. He was 4-for-4 on extra-point attempts in the 34-31 road win.

Hold on.. so McM had its' first teams in the game 'til the end, and UMHB was still running its' offense with 2nd and 3rd teams? Uh... so? It's 2's and 3's...

Chris, just wanted to add a "thanks" also for the game recap.  I was traveling out of the country and I enjoyed your report, since I missed the game broadcast.

Good luck Cowboys...against the other "purple team"...in the ASC!

If you have your 2nd's and 3rd's in and RUNNING the ball down the opponent's throat that's fine.  But it's CLASSLESS to continue to throw the ball up 50 pts.  What does that teach the kids?  Continue to beat a man when he's down?  Sorry...I believe in beating a man without destroying his dignity.  A win's a win.  What's the point of throwing the ball on 1st and 2nd down when you're up by 40?  My rule is beat the hell out of them in the first half...score as much as you can.  2nd half, if you're up by 35 or more, put in your subs and run the ball.  If the other coach was smart, he would run the ball as well and get out of there as quickly as possible.

I played for several great coaches and have coached with several more.  I guess my high school coach, Tom Kimbrough, one of the classiest gentleman in Texas High School Football history taught me to beat people with class.  We still won a national championship and we didn't throw the ball more than 20 times that season.  Of course, we were a veer team!   :D

It's all good people...lighten up. I just never thought much of Pete.  Don't know the rest of the staff.  I have a lot of friends that coach in that area and they would agree with me that Pete thinks very highly of himself, but they don't have any reason to get on this message board so you'll just have to take my word for it.  That's the problem with being a winner...people either love you or hate you.

It seems that every season we  have this same discussion. Nothing is ever resolved. Those that think the score was run-up never concede, no matter how much evidence is given to the contrary... but since we are on the subject I will toss in my two cents.

I think the only place where running-up the score might apply would be in pee-wee ball. Once you get to high school and  beyond, well strap on the jock and take it like a man. If your feelings are going to get hurt or your self-esteem is going to be bruised by ever getting stomped then don't play sports. Join the chess club.  On second thought,  I'll bet that you can even have the score run-up on you in chess.

I have been on both sides of the score board. I was on a team that was behind 45-0 at the half. I would have felt worse if the team we were playing had done anything other that run their offense - all of it. In fact, in that particular game, when we were getting close to scoring in the second half the opposing coach put his first team back in the game. It did not matter to me. Beat me as bad as you can, but please don't take pity on me.

Did a particular team run-up the score or not? 'Tis a moot point to me.

One thing is certain, the dominate team du jour is always despised. Whoever is on a roll and winning is going to be accused of all sorts of things by the have-nots. Its true at every level.

Is it really classless when your 2nd and 3rd string QB's combine to throw a total of 6 passes?                                                       When 3 of them were on 3rd and 10+, and when only 3 of them were actually caught?

Kelly Boggs

That is the thing about those darn statistics... they don't lie.

I said it then and I'll say it again, that is the most classless group of coaches in the ASC and it is an embarassment to all the other coaches out there that try to exemplify good sportsmanship to their players and their fans.

I believe it is absolutely OK to discuss running up the score (even if I do not agree with you).

I think what is really classless is making personal attacks on a person's character when you know full well that he will never, because of his position, be able to refute those attacks.  Everyone of us has people who do not like us or the things we do.  Jesus said, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone".  Just because you happen to not like Coach Fredenburg is no reason to attack him personnally on this board.  I happen to know Coach Kimbrough as well and I do not think he would ever has posted comments such as yours in a public forum.   >:(

PS:  I am happy my son learned the lessons he did under Pete Fredenburg !!

I might rather have UMHB throwing against me when I'm down by 50 than continuing to knock me all over South Central Texas with the ground game.  I'm just saying.  324 yards per game rushing.  Second to Mount Union.

Just a thought.

Kelly, you've gone Karma crazy! ;D

+1 for you
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Bill McCabe

roocru, I agree with everything you said.  To personally attack Coach Fred and his staff as classless speaks for itself.  Coach Fred was an excellent mentor for my son while he was at UMHB.  My wife and I feel blessed that he was able to play at UMHB under Coach Fred and graduate from the University.  In my opinion, the attacks on his character are nothing more than sour grapes.

Kelly Boggs

Toby,

'Tis more blessed to give than to receive! And my karma total proves it. ;D
