Well, since all of the talk since yesterday is about UMHB, I thought I would give my opinion of the disappointing loss by HSU.   ;)

I'm going to say this again, the HSU defense is bad.  There is no room for anyone to say that the HSU defense is improving each game.  It's not!!!  If you are giving up more than 400 yards a game and giving up more than 40 points a game each week, your defense isn't improving!!!

I will say this for HSU, the offense looks pretty good.  Feaster is a heck of a QB.  He has a great touch.  Jones is a little cannonball, tough to bring down.  They are able, for the most part, to move the ball at will.  HSU is lucky that Feaster is only a sophomore!!!

When was the last time the Cowboys were 3-4.  I can't remember!!!  HSU has a tough row to hoe the next 3 games.  Only 1 home game left against TLU, and 2 on the road, SRSU and McM.  None of these games are going to be easy for this team.

One last thing, good game by HPU.  They toughed it out and never quit.

Josh, let me know your thoughts from Saturday.  My wife still wanted me to stick you and take your lens!!!   ;D

Kickhoe, to answer your question, the last time that HSU was 3-4 was Oct 27, 1990, after the Cowboys had beaten Trinity 35-27 on their way to a 3-6 season, which was the last time that HSU finished below .500 in a season.  :)

Ralph, I guess I ought to know that since that was when I was attending HSU!!!   ;D

Brian--

It was nice to finally meet you.

As for the game, I'm trying not to say anything at all if I can't say something nice.   :-\

I do think we got hosed on the kickoff recovery (I was right there and saw the whole thing), but I don't think that's what cost us the game, by any means.

Congrats to HPU on the win.

It looks like there will be a 25 degree difference in the temperatures between Belton and Whitewater during this week of practice, mid to upper 70's to lower mid 50's.

Ya, the Hawks will be pretty comfortable if the reported weather forecast holds but the Crusaders might want to break out their long sleeves if they have them.   ;)

Here are some of the must have items, besides the long sleeves 413 mentioned, for the cru north-bound traveling party:

Available Sizes: Small(SM), Medium(MD), Large(LG), Extra-Large(XL), 2X-Large(XXL), 3X-Large(XXXL)

Available Colors: Black, Midnight Navy, Red, Green, Purple, Royal, White, Atomic Orange, Maroon, Steeltown Gold

Ideal Temp: Temperatures under 50 degrees

I can hook you up - just let me know!!  ;)

Josh you were at the game, so did you get any pictures of Carrillo getting lit up by Austin, #8 for HPU?  Just curious because the way Dallas Huston described it on the radio it sounded like one hell of a hit.  I wish I could have been there to see HPU ruin HSU's homecoming.  It sounded like a great offensive game where both teams refused to quit.

I was also at the UMHB/MC game yesterday.  I believe Big C and crukid have just about said it all, but I do have a few comments.

1.  Yes, that was a really bizarre game with so many incredibly long runs; however, even though the literally 9 in the VERY compact box strategy definitely contributed, I think Big C is underestimating severely the UMHB offense, and especially the 2 or even 3 tailbacks UMHB runs out there. Yes, they are well under 6' but they are strong, resilient and can take it to the house speed wise better than any UMHB has ever had since I have been watching, and definitely more than even the Stagg Bowl team.  UMHB has now  outscored its opponents 119-3 in the third quarter this year. That is hard to beat, but obviously NO ONE is invincible or unbeatable--even the 2007 Crusaders. We will certainly find out in the weeks to come, beginning this Saturday.

2.Having said all that, I was impressed with the MC QB and receivers, and o-line for that matter.  Especially in the first half UMHB did not get effective pressure too often and MC gave UMHB all they wanted. When it was 28-14 and UMHB fumbled on its own 10,  to hold MC to a field goal was big. Later the Fleming interception at the 7 to keep it from being 28-24 right before the half was even bigger. I believe the very next play Daniels went 93 yards for 35-17 at the half. Then about 8-9 minutes into quarter 3 it was a really quick 62-17.  From watching both games in person. I definitely felt this was even more of a test in the first half than the HSU game was to the same point.  IMO, despite the score this was UMHB's toughest test to date.

3. UMHB had plenty of subs in a lot before but almost exclusively after that.  I do not understand at all having your first team QB,etc. in there heaving it down the field for 2 meaningless TD's with 8 and even 4 minutes to go, however.  To me that risks injury and is just to save face for the coach to make the final score look better.  Everyone always whines about the strong teams running up the score--which I firmly have not seen UMHB do at all this year--but the same people surely cheer when their stud QB throws 2 more TD's against 2nd and 3rd teamers.

4. My last comment about the game.  Definitely UMHB had to miss Elliott Barcak, its outstanding and experienced strong safety (played corner last year) who was hurt in the LC game. He did not even suit up but hopefully I think he will be back for Whitewater.  I am concerned that UMHB did have a starting corner(Parker) and starting free safety(Williams) dinged up during the game and both missed time back there. Williams returned but I don't think Parker ever did. Hopefully they will both be back this week for #2 vs. #3!!  I can't wait!!

5. Finally, congrats to my HPU Yellow Jackets and a huge win over HSU after so many heartbreaking losses this year . Keep it up!

Ralph Turner

Rick, whom did you and your HPU teammates consider your biggest rival at HPU, football and basketball, when you were there?

Whom do you consider HPU's biggest rival from your perspective now?

Thanks

I would like to touch on the weather issue a little bit......

I'm sure the big "hogmaulies" for the CRU will love the cold weather. Big guys always get a little pep in their step when it's cold out.

Must I remind everyone of the UMHB vs. MU game in 2004. 32 Degrees, strong wind, and snow. The weather didn't faze the Cru at all. UMHB can handle the cold weather. So bring it on.......

I can't wait till this weekend.......it's gonna be a great game. Hopefully the CRU can make a statement this weekend. Cheers....to a great week of practice.

dballa, it was a hell of a hit.  Carrillo never saw it coming.  There was another HSU guy right beside him, and the HPU kid went right around him and nailed him.  After Carrillo fumbled it, he just got up and trotted off the field like nothing happened.  It looked like it hurt!!!

Damn......I was looking for any advantage that we could get.  Well..........maybe they will be tired from the long trip.  ;D

LOL......Ditto on that ;D.  Last years meeting was a great game. Yalls all-american D-tackle caused havok in the backfield all day long. UW has a great program, much respect. If the CRU can pull off a win, it would be a great victory for the UMHB program. Might be another stone in the graveyard........

Sloppy weather in Belton today. 50 degrees, strong wind, and a constant drizzle. Hopefully it clears up tomorrow. Dont need any distractions.....

Actually, they should probably work that.  Sounds like what they may be playing in Saturday.  And, yes.......we do really miss Kleppe but a few other boys have stepped up.  ;D  He is a student assistant coach for the Hawks this year so he will still be on the field.

ASC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
(Games of October 20)

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jarvis Thrasher, RB, Sr., Mary Hardin-Baylor
Mary Hardin-Baylor senior running back Jarvis Thrasher (Temple, TX / THS) broke the American Southwest Conference single-game rushing record with 324 yards on just 12 carries in the Cru's 69-30 road win over Mississippi College. Thrasher, who also set a school record with four rushing touchdowns, broke the ASC mark on a 15-yard TD run at 7:03 in the third quarter - his final carry of the game. The record had stood since 2003 when Louisiana College's Wayne Davis had 322 yards on 37 totes. Thrasher's other scores were from 89 - UMHB's first play from scrimmage - 61 and 81 yards out. He also helped the Cru break their own conference record for team rushing yards (613 yards).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Darius Roberts, FS, Sr., East Texas Baptist

East Texas Baptist senior free safety Darius Roberts (Alexandria, LA / Peabody Magnet HS) had a team-high nine tackles - four solos - a pass break-up and a forced fumble that came late in the fourth quarter to preserve a 27-23 road win over Louisiana College. With the Tigers leading only 27-21, Roberts stripped the ball away from LC receiver Taylor Huffman at the 2-yard line and it was recovered in the end zone by ETBU.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jordan Rideaux, KR, Fr., Louisiana College

Louisiana College freshman Jordan Rideaux (Carencro, LA / CHS) got his team on the scoreboard for the first time against East Texas Baptist with an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Rideaux, who racked up 161 yards on five returns in the narrow loss, now has two TD returns on the season -  something only two other players have done once in the American Southwest Conference this season.
