UMHB has now  outscored its opponents 119-3 in the third quarter this year.

I think one thing that has not been mentioned to date about the MC-UMHB game is the coaching aspect.  It says a lot about the coaching decisions and halftime adjustments if you are able to outscore your opponents 119-3 in the 3rd quarter!!!

I agree with many of the comments made by Big C in his game report.  I thought it well thought out and very objective.

The only quarrel I have , however, is that it sounded as if some credit was taken away from the win against MC because of mistakes they made.

I think the reason UMHB is as good as they are, is that the are able to MAKE teams make mistakes with their speed, coaching and execution.  Are they beatable???  Of course.  No team is invincible, but they still gave a pretty good team a THRASHERing.  (Bad joke I know)  They made a defense that was giving up 44 YPG rushing, give up 612.  While they might not have had many 3rd level players on their defense, (from what I've heard), 9 in the box is still hard to account for and still produce that many rushing yards.  But again, to me it sounds like the defense came up big when they had to to keep the lead through the 1st half, and it was a matter of time before they pulled ahead.

UMHB has done this all year, to every team.  Continue to wear down opponents as the game goes on, make good halftime adjustments (119-3 in 3rd quarter), and capitalize on the other teams mistakes.  Take your pick as to which might be more important.
YOU KNOW IT!!!!

Josh you were at the game, so did you get any pictures of Carrillo getting lit up by Austin, #8 for HPU?  Just curious because the way Dallas Huston described it on the radio it sounded like one hell of a hit.  I wish I could have been there to see HPU ruin HSU's homecoming.  It sounded like a great offensive game where both teams refused to quit.

The photos will be up tonight--I don't know if I got one of that specific play or not yet, dballa--I had several things to catch up on when I got home yesterday evening, and haven't looked through them yet.

Yes, though, it was one hell of a hit.  I think it looked even more vicious than it actually was because I don't think Carrillo ever saw him coming.

Josh, I'm sure it was hectic for you being homecoming and all.  I'll be looking forward to the pictures.

Kickhoe,  Carrillo is a great athlete.  It would definitely take more than one good hit on him to take him out of a game.

Does anyone know if the UMHB game will be available on d3cast this week?

I was at the HPU vs HSU game this weekend.  The first thing I want to say is that both teams played tough and to the best of their abilities, something HPU hasn't done in enough games this year, and that both teams played till the end.  I posted earlier that I am a numbers guy and looking at the stats found some interesting facts.

                               HPU                      HSU
Pass-Comp-Int     45-29-0                 28-21-1
Pass Yds                  349                      329
Rushing Att-Yds     33-96                   28-173
Fumbles #-Lost       2-0                        1-1  (The Turnovers (Fumble & Int) did not result in HPU points)
Penalties #-Yds     8-53                     12-142
TOP by QTR
1st                        11:32                      3:28
2nd                         5:39                      9:21
3rd                          6:21                      4:53  (Don't know who had the ball the rest of the time)
4th                          7:52                      7:08

This is the only game this season where HPU controled the Time of Possesion (TOP), Turnovers, and Penalties in a game.

What I didn't understand in this game was HPU won the toss and defered to the second half and HSU chose to kick with the wind.  Why did HSU make that decision?  That gave HPU the ball first in both halfs.   I would be greatful if some HSU fan or someone in the know could explain this decision to me.

The hit by Austin happend in front of where I was setting.  Austin was being blocked by the WR and as the runner came by he was able to shead the block and make the hit.  The HSU player was looking to his left and didn't even see him there.

I wish HPU could have played with this intensity and control all season.

Best of luck to both teams the rest of the season.

hpudad,

I agree with you.  With how close the games have been, losing in OT a couple times, losing by a touchdown after a costly special teams penalty, and losing by only 10 after committing 8 TO's, HPU could very well be 6-1 and undefeated so far in conference play instead of 1-6.

HPUDad--

You're certainly not the only person wondering why that decision was made--it was the topic of much discussion in the press box after the game!  ???

I remember last week predicting that UMHB would crush the front 7 of MC's defense, and everyone else's prediction or hope was that MC had vastly improved. Not the case. MC had played poor teams up to that point(except HSU which rolled up 45 pts and now stands 3-4). This week we'll see how they play against an average D3 line in ETBU. I bet they will struggle this game also. The CHOCS have a long way to go on the defensive side and will be hard pressed in that area next year too b/c Norm Joseph will probably put a huge emphasis on trying to recruit wideouts for his QB to throw to next year. His overall coaching scheme relies on offense and traditionally the teams that do that don't have the play makers on D to compete each week.
-Don't think I am dogging MC. I was rooting for them all year, but I know they will be dissapointed b/c they were not able to take the next step in the ASC race like they wanted too (although they might just finish #2 all by themselves if they can pull a win this week against a stout ETBU Defensive front.

Ralph:

I think HPU definitely looks to the two Abilene schools now as the biggest rivals. I am sure proximity and familiarity play a part in that.  I think probably because of the Baptist connection we would say HSU is the "biggest" rival: however, the competition in a particular sport--whoever they are-- always will even trump that history and familiarity many times.

When I was in HPU (1971-1975), of course we were scholarship and played in the Lone Star Conference with some big schools. My freshman year we were(believe it or not!!)co-champs with Southwest Texas in football and of course played East Texas, Texas A & I, Stephen F., Sam Houston I think, etc.  along with ACU and I guess McMurry too.  I remember a big football game my junior year against ACU and Wilbert Montgomery. In basketball there were some big games against SFA that I remember. Even then however McMurry and ACU were big because they were so close of course.

At that time HSU was I believe trying to play big time basketball. When I was a freshman or sophomore in high school I saw HSU play (in their field house in Abilene)  the University of Houston with Elvin Hayes, Don Chaney, et al.  It was not a fair fight!
