TLU GOAT,

You fool!!!!  I have just kinda laid low this season and just kinda stayed out this season, but then you come on here.  My team (HSU) has struggled and I think they have a bright future ahead of them, just has been a rebuilding year.  Even in our rebuilding year we (and i can say we because i played there) spanked yall all over the field.  We had a running back run for 255 yards on 12 carries with 3 touchdowns I believe.  I realize you dont play for TLU this year, but unless you are some Adrian Peterson or even a Brett Elliott type of athlete you are not going to walk in to the ASC and take over in one year.  I can not wait for you to step on the field, if you even step on the field, as a freshman I am assuming, and get a feel for college football.  So we will see what type of enthusiasm you have next year after the first couple weeks.

Good luck in the offseason!!!

Bill McCabe

minni, I had wondered where you were.  +1 karma for your usual passion.   :)   I hope HSU has a better season next year.  It is good for the ASC.

Bill McCabe

Well said Ron.  The quality of athletes at UWW looked pretty good to me and they would win the ASC if they were a member.

umhbalum- i have been to every game this season, have only seen one slant to #11. i would also like to see (on occasion) high percentage passing like a slant to #11 or a screen to our fast tailbacks.

tsgktx

If I recall correctly they tried a slant to PO on Sat against ETBU, but it went incomplete. It appeared that the signals were crossed because Patrick was not even expecting the pass. Josh's pass hit Patrick in the shoulder while it appeared Patrick was going in for a block against the DB.

I think our offense would thrive with a couple of simple pass plays. Patrick is really quick and if we can hit him in the flat on a slant who knows what he could do. Also the screen or even a swing pass to the RB would work well also in my opinion.

I doubt that the Goat will prove to be right, but I do appreciate having a TLU fan in the house.  We need a bit more conference diversity, IMO.

I've been pretty busy lately, so I should also take the opportunity to congratulate the UMHB football team and their fans on the Crusaders' 2007 ASC Championship.  It's a hard thing for a HSU fan/alumnus like me to do, but a conference championship is always an accomplishment worthy of praise and it should rightly be given.

I'd also like to wish the Crusaders the best of luck in the playoffs--this is your year to make some noise.  I hope you represent the ASC well and bring a Stagg Bowl trophy home to Texas.  Enjoy the run as long as it lasts--next year, you get to find out what life is like with virtually no returning starters.   ;)

Okay, UMHB went to UWW and got demolished, you can say it was because of turnovers or whatever, but C'mon!!! The quality of athlete is by far greater in Texas than in Wisconsin,so if a Wisconsin team can do it, so can a team from the ASC. UWW was not scared of the purple helmet and you saw the result.

I can assure you that UWW had some great athletes. Most UW teams would run the table in the ASC, with UMHB and a rebuilt HSU team playing alot of "Toss up" games against the top teams. We all love football, Texan's are proud of their football. However, good football get's played all of this great nation. Just the other day some team in Ohio was on ESPN for scoring 72 in the first quarter. They have outscored their opponents 600+-0. Not allowing one single point all season long. How many Texas teams can boast that type of performance? TLU has had some athletes in the past. But i don't see them stacking up on athletes like UMHB and HSU does. The history of success is not there. Yeah yall had a good season in 2005 beating HSU, and a couple other ones, but I don't see yall running the ASC anytime soon. Unless UMHB and HSU leave the conference, which I also don't see happening anytime soon.

hahaha...just the mid week reading that i needed....

"umhb doesn't do anything great"

"next year you get to find out what life is like with virtually no returning starters"

sorry i'm not good with multiple quote boxes you can thank the goat and Josh B. for those statements...for anybody hoping for UMHB to not return much experience next year i got some bad news for you. Quincy Daniels is gonna be the featured back next year. If UMHB has proved anything this year, they've shown that they really don't have to be able to throw the ball to put up some gauty numbers on the ground. As he gets a year smarter, stronger, and faster it's gonna be fun to watch him when he gets more than thirteen carries a game. Also he has caught seven passes this year so apparantly we do have some plays to pass him the ball...UMHB coaches just really don't like calling those plays when they can simply hand off. Also the back up qb, offensive line, and wr's have seen the feild substantially this year, it shouldn't take long for them to adjustment next season. The back up QB Josh Saenz actually has a better completion percentage and throws the ball for more yards/reception.
Josh Welch            9-9   148.10  120-62-6    51.7 1049  12  79 116.6
Josh Saenz            9-0   177.00   26-15-0    57.7  330   1  48  36.7

Thanks for the mid-week humor, Go CRU, keep focused on HPU, I still have bitter memories of driving to brownwood and seeing what the yellow jackets can do when UMHB is not ready to play.

P.S. as much as it kills me, Go Cowboys, a big win over the in-town rival will not only insure the winning season but also give them some momentum and pride heading into the offseason, I look forward to seeing them come back stronger and better next season.

k-hud

I'm good with focusing on one season at a time. But thank you, goat, for your enthusiasm, even if it is a bit premature and cocky. For the record I think it would be great if TLU (and a few other teams as well) could seriously start challenging for the conference title along with UMHB and HSU.  If the ASC grew to be a stronger conference with several ranked teams like the WIAC, that means sending hopefully multiple teams to the playoffs already battle-tested instead of winning every game by several TDs, and therefore more prepared for the tough games against teams like UWW and MUC

we will graduate many starters this year, however most of our second string players have seen considerable action this year. many of them have played 1/2 the time due to the scores being out of reach.  in many of the games, we were 3 and 4 deep competing against many first team asc opponents. yes we will miss many of our stars, but depth is deep and we will be ready to complete next year.

yessir

I think the keys to UMHB's success each year is physical play by the o-line and d-line, as well as a physical running back. With that being said.......

Offense.....
All year long, including against UWW. UMHB rotated in their second team o-line every 2 or 3 series. The second team o-line performed very well, including moving the ball against UWW. UMHB will graduate 9 players off of the offense this year. Everyone except the LT and the RG. However, with very experience backup offensive lineman and a great running back in Quincy Daniels. I don't see why the rush heavy UMHB offense shouldn't be able to duplicate this year numbers next year. Like someone has already mentioned, Welch's backup Josh Saenz, has thrown the ball well this year. So I think he will be able to take the reigns at QB. The Cru will lose great recievers in Cole Smith and P.O., but have promising replacements in FR Brian Scott and P. Davis. UMHB ussually has plenty of skill guys to fill in the spots.

As for Defense.....
UMHB will be returning 6 starters. All of which have contributed greatly this year. Balderas, Jenkins, E. Henri (should be Co-defensive Player of the Year), Parker, and William have all made alot of great plays for the CRU this year. All will be back in 2008. Some big holes to fill will be Will Dewease, Barcak, and Jarrell Freeman (Co-Defensive Player of the Year). Yet thanks to the lopsided scores this year, their backup have gotten alot of reps and should be ready to fill the spots. Due to UMHB's aggresive play on defense, alot of players get reps on saturday's, escpecially the D-lineman. So I think the D-line will be ready in 2008.

Special teams.....
Losing Joel Munoz will be a big blow for the CRU. Having Parker returning punts, and the team speed of the CRU should keep the specials teams putting up National leading numbers.

All in all, UMHB will be returning 28 players off of their 2 deep this year. Roughly 60% of their team. I would put my money on a UMHB team that went 9-1, beating their opponents easily, to win the ASC. Especially before I put it on a 2-8 TLU team that is returning roughly 90% of it's starts. Having only 10 Seniors on your entire team is not a good thing. If TLU can't keep players around for 4 years, then I don't see them being successful anytime soon. Seniors play a very important part of team, both on and off the field. I wish TLU the best of luck, but I don't see them taking down UMHB any time soon. I hope some more ASC teams do move to the upper tiers of the ASC as well as the Nation. Maybe UMHB will get a better seeding in the playoffs that way......

A couple of interesting thoughts looking at the projections Pat and the others have posted on the blog.  Depending on how those brackets, it would seem most likely that the W&J bracket would play the Mount Union bracket in the semis.  This would prevent an all-OAC Stagg, if Capital would be able to win the bracket.  But, if they don't, it would set up UMHB for a return trip to Alliance in the semi's with a possible rematch against UWW in the Stagg.  UMHB might even get the chance to play Capital in the playoffs, giving a common opponent comparison between them and MUC prior to the matchup.

I feel that the ranking criteria, particularly in the South, have ranked UMHB too low, and I would bet that most people wouldn't be surprised to see UMHB as a #4 still winning the bracket.  Unfortunately, it means a lot of road games against increasingly stiff competition.  I'm just surprised at how much a loss to the #3 team has hurt.  It really makes me grateful that Mount Union was (so far) able to run the table during a down year for the OAC.

Good luck in the playoffs, at least until you play Mount Union!

Well if UMHB has alot of road games again I think they will be ok.  They already have the road map on how to handle that scenario.  I hope they do meet up with Mount Union again.  It seems they are the only team that has been able to stand up the the Purple Machine in the last few years.
If it's not about winning and losing then why keep score?

MUC lost to St John's in the Stagg in 2003, and Ohio Northern beat MUC in the regular season in 2005.
