Just wanted to congratulate MC Head Coach Norman Joseph, his staff and the players on a record-setting season before all the talk rightfully shifts to UMHB and their potential run to the Stagg Bowl.

The Choctaws will miss the playoffs due to their 45-42 loss to HSU, which came on the only field goal HSU has made all season. But also, MC's nonconference game against LaGrange (0-10) killed any hopes of them getting a Pool C bid with an 8-2 record.

The Choctaws end the season after rewriting the MC record book. Adam Shaffer threw for 3,497 yards and 31 scores and should rank #2 nationally in passing yards per game. In his last four games, Shaffer has averaged 462 yards per game and has thrown 15 TD's. Jake Allen and Marcus Terry each went over 1,000 yards receiving with 12 and 11 touchdowns, respectively. The Choctaws also managed to run for 150 yards a game and will rank somewhere between #2-5 in total offense.

Shaffer and Allen each pretty much set all of the individual single season records, but here is a quick list of team records that were set this year from our media guide.

Most Points Scored - 404 (380, 1990)
Most Touchdowns - 54 (52, 1990)
Most First Downs - 247 (229. 1982)
Most First Downs Passing - 152 (114, 2006)
Most Pass Attempts - 406 (379, 1999)
Most Pass Completions - 235 (199, 2000)
Most Passing Yards - 3,675 yards (2,766, 2006)
Most Touchdown Passes - 32 (22, 2000)
Most Total Yards - 5,182 yards (4,773, 1990)
Most Extra Points - 48 (46, 1990)

The defense drew some criticism for the two losses, but they were also much improved under Coach Brian Young and will rank #2 in the ASC this year in total defense, rush defense, sacks and tackles for loss.

The team should return eight starters on offense and nine on defense next season. All three starting receivers must be replaced as well as three-year starters Clint Champagne and Corey Cooley on the defense, but next season should receive a lot of preseason attention.

Great year Chris!!! Congratulations to the Choctaws and Coach Joseph!!!

Some pretty good D III Football in the Jackson area. Probably would be hard pressed to find two better turn around stories in such close proximity anywhere around the country. A real credit to Coach Joseph and Coach Dubose, their staffs, the support of the schools and the buy in and execution of the systems put in place at both schools by the young men on the teams.

There are a bunch of teams around the country that I am confident would love be in similar situations as the Chocs and Majors.

Not bad, not bad at all!

Congratulations, Cowboys!
Ralph,

I'm guessing that you listened from home.  If you did you missed an exciting game.  It was a little crazy.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

I am on call this weekend.  Amazing, but I am excited to see the outcome of a game in which the Cowboys hung a "71" on us.

There were several possessions in the game in the third quarter where HSU just pulled away, and we couldn't come all of the way back! :-\

Here is one other fact to consider.

Imagine looking into the Crystal Ball and seeing only one fact from the future in the 2007 ASC Football season.

I know I am personally grateful that I did not know that McMurry would score 56 points on HSU back in mid-August.  Aren't you?

I stayed unitl HSU scored their 64th point.  I thought I'd be leaving sooner, but McM kept coming back.  It was a lot of fun to watch.  Can you do me a favor and post the south bracket here when it's announced? I'm preaching in Seymore today and have no access to the net except by cell phone until late this afternoon and my cell phone won't show the d3 football main page, but will show the message boards.

I'm watching the broadcast on ESPN U and the CRU got the 4th seed and Trinity got the #6 seed.  Trinity will be traveling to Belton for the first round.

Bill McCabe

UMHB will have to go through some familiar teams and trips in the playoffs.

Ralph,  is Mt. Union in the East Region?

Bill McCabe

At least the NCAA didn't move Mount Union to the south as the #1 seed.   ;D

am i to assume that the wj region plays the ww region?

the umhb pass defense has faced some high power passing programs this year. what is not taken into thought is that in most cases, the cru was up by many touchdowns and a lot of passing yards were gained against them in the second half against 2 and 3 defenses

hpu's qb did miss some open receivers yesterday, however a lot of the reason was due to heavy pressure from the d line and blitz packages.

the officiating for the game in brownwood was pathetic. the score should have been 91-20. our receiver #11 was mugged twice in the red zone prior to halftime. #24 touchdown was called back due to holding and #26 touchdown was not given even though he crossed the goal inside the endzone. the officials told the cru players that they were trying to keep the game from getting "way" out of hand. when is it the officials job to help control a score? i know we won easily, but is that what officials hired to do?

dballa

Actually when the receivers were missed down the field it was on designed roll outs and also a toss back to the running back for a pass, in which they weren't pressured at that time.  They just overthrew their targets.  I think they were overadjusting due to the strong wind and put too much on the ball.

He was pressured a lot when they were trying to throw short crossing patterns and even passes in the flat.

To complain about the officiating is a waste of time and you know it.  They made a lot of calls both ways and actually could have called a lot more.  When #11 was hit, the ball was well overthrown and uncatchable.  Just because things don't go your way doesn't mean it was a bad call.

#11 was mugged twice, explain why the officials told our players that they were not calling against hpu due to keeping the score down.

Good assumption, drinkxs.  There's a chance for yet another UWW and MUC Stagg Bowl, or a chance for UMHB to get some revenge in the semis, and then try to prevent some revenge in the Stagg if MUC makes it that far.  I think UWW probably got the easiest road through to the semis, but they could have to face two of the hardest tests from that point if they play both UMHB and MUC.  I'm still not convinced that UMHB really showed up in Wisconsin, and that if they play again, it could be a very different game.

since you're so in tuned with the players go look at the video with them and see the plays.  The balls were UNCATCHABLE.  By rule there is no foul on the play.  There were a few times our receivers were hit without the ball being there but the penalty wasn't called because it was an uncatchable ball.

Also since you're so close to the team, tell me why a coach runs a fake punt leading by more than 5 touchdowns?
