So, Coach Fred will use this same fake punt formation that is in the video going out to Trinity, if needed in a future game?
Or will he use an alternative fake punt play that UMHB has in its armamentarium?

dballa

used2b,

That's not exactly the philosophy I've heard from coaches before.  Most of the ones I've known want to save their trick plays and their best plays for when they absolutely need them.

I think it's a coach that wasn't satisfied with the margin of victory decreasing when HPU scored 20 points.  Why else would he run that as well as put the starters back in late in the 3rd quarter?

Good luck to UMHB in the playoffs.  I'm ready to move on to basketball, the real sport that I follow.

I think coach Fred wanted people to have a lot to think about.  He put Josh Saenz in the 2nd qtr, Had P.O. throw a pass of the reverse (a 78 yd td pass might I add), and the fake punt.  He seems to have found new pages in the play book.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

When I played high school ball ( ;D ), our coaches showed us the film and the scouting reports on trick plays.  It was just part of the week's preparation for a well-prepared team.

We knew that everybody had those plays.  We practiced the trick plays that the opposing coach had pulled on my coach from 4 seasons earlier!

My question is why show them when you don't need them.

wesleydad

find this discussion interesting on the philosophy on what to show and not show in a game.  talking to the wesley coaches after the game this week and they said they kept it as simple as they could because they did not want to show anything new.  only trick play was a reverse to beavers and if you are coaching against wesley and dont expect that sometime during the game then you are not prepared.  the other thing i noticed is that when hoping for all these rematches with muc and uww, noone seems to be wishing for the first possible rematch you could have which would be with wesley in the south region finals.  dont be in such a hurry to get to the semis and finals, you likely will not win the south region.  0 - 2 against wesley the last 2 years, i can see why noone is mentioning it. :D

thanks Ralph for teaching me a new word today- armamentarium. another +1 of the karma I cannot yet give.

wesleydad, I'm pretty sure UMHB is focused on Trinity right now, not so concerned about potentially meeting Wesley again in the regional final.  We'll start worrying about that game sometime late afternoon on the 24th, after the second round game, if we go that far.  And then... well I've always heard that the 3rd time is the charm  ;)

Straight out of Caesar's Gallic Wars and fighting Vercingetorix;D

Next week we will learn about the impedimentum.

Ralph,
After a GA or whoever breaks down all of the films for the week, they will typically send a scouting report to the head man or the head man will discuss different aspects of the game with those who have watched so much film. When special teams are brought up, someone will mention a trick play, fake or any thing else out of the ordinary. When this happens, the special teams coach or defesne or offense or whoever, will want these plays explained on the board to make sure their team's alignment, formation, or scheme can handle the fake, etc. The idea behind showing a potential opponent so much stuff on film is to get him to spend his coaches' meeting time thinking and talking about these "extra" things; and then if they need to tweek their punt return team, they'll have to do it by spending practice time to get it corrected, just so UMHB or whoever won't run the thing. This is an old school coaching tactic to get the opponent to spend time "worrying" about things other than spending time on the basic O/D/K.
Fredenburg, will have another fake punt ready for whenever he needs it.

And, I wouldn't be surprised if Coach Mohr shows the fake punt formation off the 2001 UMHB team films from his personal archives!   :D :D :D

Hmm Ralph,
A pretty rough shot, you gave me there.  I was trying to illustrate my knowledge of how some coaches think about loading any future opponent's worries.
I think Coach Mohr will enough to worry about UMHB than ANY fake punt, ever. He might should run the ESPN-Millsaps play every snap.

No rough shot, used2b!

Coach Fred has those same game films on Coach Mohr from that 2001 game himself, and a few others!   :D :D :D

If I was Coach Mohr I would throw them tapes away cause they ain't working no more. His coaching stratagies haven't faired to well against the CRU lately. So far he's 3-2 against the CRU. I think it's time to even things up this week. First time for the Tigers to travel to Belton. Congrats to the CRU sweeping the ASC very easily this year.  Hopefully you got plenty of steam left for the post-season.  Also, Congrats to HSU for keeping the winning season streak alive. I'm sure the pressure to do so was tough. Hope everyone has a great offseason. GO CRU!!!!!
Walking on thin ice cuz someone lost......again.

Something thoughts I would like to add on the strength of UMHB's passing defense as a former linebacker...

UMHB has ALWAYS prided itself on stopping the run.  That is what we believe and what we do.  We still spend time every practice working on the pass, but that is not our first concern.

Teams have more passing yards because they generally tend to have more passing attempts than rushing attempts.  Therefore, more attempts= more yards.

Yes teams do get passing yards, yes they do make some 2nd or 3rd and long conversions using the pass, yes they do score a few passing TD's, but that is ok, they are not CONTROLLING THE CLOCK.  In the grand scheme of things UMHB is controlling the clock and the other team is not.  That has been proven in the past to win football games.  The same is true for UMHB.

This is our philosophy.  We want to have the ball more than the other team, because we believe that we can score most of the time we have it, and we believe we can stop the opposition who has it FEWER snaps and FEWER minutes.

This philosophy did not work out against UWW not because it doesn't work, but because we did not execute it as a team.  The offense had some early turnovers, got taken out of their gameplan and the defense was put in some bad positions and made some mistakes to yield touchdowns.  However, if you remember, UMHB's defense did stand up very well to a very good rushing attack.  In that game, UWW had more time of possession with 31:38 min, to UMHB 28:22 min.

Even though the CRU defense only gave up 92 yds rushing and 155 yds passing to the #3 team in the nation(at the time), you cannot let a great team like UWW control the clock and take advantage of field position.  The latter was obviously also the case because most teams do not score 41 points on 247 yds of total offense.  UWW is a very good team.  They executed their gameplan, prevented UMHB from doing the same, and was better than UMHB that day.

And one last thing as I conclude my rant...

When you see UMHB running the option and running "the same play" over and over again, please realize that there are about 90 different ways to run and block the option, and UMHB runs just about every single one of them.  That takes A LOT of time to practice and perfect during the week.  You cannot be a great option team AND a great passing team, you have to be a little vulnerable somewhere.  Please keep in mind that coaches usually know a little bit more about football and their program than you do, so before you begin to be an armchair quarterback, do your homework.
YOU KNOW IT!!!!
