Any word on recruiting from around the conference? Any word on sully and their coaches? Seven months til another run is made.... ::)

There were a few names listed for both HSU and UMHB in today's Dallas Morning-News (as "signees") but I don't know anything about any of the kids.

They announced on the sports station yesterday that one of the linebackers from Abilene Cooper is going to play football at Wheaton next year.  I think the ASC may have missed one.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Do D3 players sign letters of intent or what?

No, there are no letters of intent in D-III.

The kid has probably paid is his deposit and been accepted to those schools.

Toby Taff

The reporter news said he signed a "letter of commitment," but there is a reason the paper is lovingly referred to as the distorter-news.

I was looking on NFLDraftScout.com and Jerrell Freeman has been moved from linebacker to Strong Safety. I am just wondering what everyone here think are his chances of making an NFL roster?

Josh Bowerman

I question whether or not he's got the speed to play in the secondary of the NFL--though at safety (specifically strong safety) this may not be quite as important as it would be at the corner or (free) safety position(s).

He'll certainly get at least one invite to a NFL camp, and probably stands as good of a shot at sticking as any DIII player has.  Will be interesting to see.

it will be all about his brains and ability to change directions and accelerate. speed would probably be secondary (no pun intended). they will look for fluid motions and explosion in reaction to play recognition, and towards the football.

Its not been announced yet but I have heard that the 2 non-conference games for UMHB are at Southern Oregon and at Belton vs Southern Nazarene. Both games should give UMHB good games before conference opens.

I also have heard that an option at quarterback will be a 6'1 transfer from Baylor. At BU he was a wide receiver.

UMHB has to play two games versus NAIA schools, one a plane flight away!

That does not help them in the post-season calculations.

Ralph, Could they have had trouble finding a D3 team to schedule?  I sure wouldn't want to play 8 games.

Absolutely!  With the way that Coach Fred has traveled to Willamette, to CNU and to UWW, I assume that he could not find the right D-3 to have a fair home-and-home series.

Both of those NAIA teams are geographically isolated as well to the degree that UMHB is isolated in D3.  They need games badly as well.

Ralph, Are they scholarship schools?

Yes, they are allowed to give football scholarships.

Bill, as I look at the difference between the NAIA schools and D-III, they (NAIA) give partial scholarships that may help with getting a few key players in the skill positions.

Southern Oregon is playing D-II's and NAIA's plus Linfield and Willamette.

Southern Nazarene beat HPU last year in the opener.
