It would appear to me that HSU has corrected a great deal of their defensive problems from last year, and that ETBU showed the Johnnies fans a lot more about the depth of the strength in the American Southwest Conference.

This is shaping up to be an interesting season in the ASC, and this was only week one!

Congratulations to HSU on  their win.  ETBU played a solid game.  I'm surprised by the MC score.

I am so glad and proud HSU made me miss my prediction. That shows a tremendous amount of character.
The only other score that really suprised me also, Bill, was the MC-MC whuppin'. Either the Methodist MC (Millsaps) is really for real or the Baptist MC (Miss. College) is not as good as projected. Possibly a little of both. Of course, it could also go to show that in a cross-town rivalry anything can happen.
How's all that for stating the obvious? :D

Congrats to Hardin-Simmons, looks like they are back to normal. Good win for the ASC this weekend. ETBU also looks like they could be in the mix for the top couple spots in the league.

Millsaps played a great game against MC yesterday. I'll give them credit, that is a very good team. I wasn't sure how good they would be up front on both sides because of losses from last year's team, but they were OK there. They beat you at the skill positions which are about as good as you're going to find in DIII, they've been together several years and have great chemistry. Juan Joseph had a great game. Besides Mary Hardin-Baylor, I would probably give them the nod against any other ASC teams, unless HSU is back to a top 10 team again. UMHB is just in another league. Millsaps is probably in the top 10-20 range in my opinion.

MC just struggled, mentally as much as physically. There are a lot of new faces at WR and in the secondary, and there were several mental busts by both yesterday, not good against a team like Millsaps which is experienced and well-coached. Two of Millsaps touchdowns were long passes on blown coverages. Our longest pass from scrimmage yesterday was 21 yards, last year our average completion was just under 16 yards.  The Choctaws had some opportunities but couldn't convert when they got in position.

MC's season will probably be dependent on how much the skill players on both sides improve through the season, and how quickly they can develop some chemistry.

wildcat  when are you coming into town?

Friday evening.  Get into DFW about 5 pm and then I'll start making my way west.  I think we're going to get to watch a real treat next Saturday and I think it's great the two programs decided to keep the series going.  HSU's program is first class.

Very solid McMurry performance in the things that I wanted a very young McMurry team to do against a strong traditional power like Trinity.

Thanks to Coach Gray for doing the things that you do!  I like the way that you are leading our football program!  :)

The team showed real character in the third quarter in its execution.

EDIT:  Gray, not Grey!

If you're interested, I'd love to take you to breakfast Saturday morning at the Dixie Pig or for lunch at Harold's BBQ, 2 uniquely Abilene establishments that everyone coming to Abilene should try at least once.  It's always good to meet another D3 fan and get to know them over food.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Do the Pig!  Old fashioned breakfast!

I knew there would be recommendations from the Abilenians.  ;D  I did the Pig with my bro-in-law and wife on Monday.  I love their biscuits and gravy.

However, if you opt to eat at the Dixie Pig, be sure to:
1. put your cardiologist on notice;
2. get the equipment to draw your own blood -- you will be able to use it in lieu of diesel fuel (and it will be cheaper!);
3. be prepared to send Jeff Foxworthy 2 years' worth of new "You might be a redneck . . ." material.

Wildcat11 is too shy to tell you he's a vegan. Do they have deep-fried Brussels sprouts down there? He'd appreciate meeting him at the airport with those.  ;)

Toby Taff

I'm not sure where to get Vegan food in West Texas, but I can certainly accommodate vegetarian.

Fairly certain he was joking.
I suspect so, but with those folks from the northwest... ;) ;D

Weak Safety

Congrats to Coach Keeling for his 150th win at HSU!

Looks like the Cowboys defense had a great game.  303 total yards, 2 interceptions, a fumble recovery (2 if you count the recovered lateral attempt at the end of the game), 2 sacks, and a HUGE goal line stand.  Sounds like a far cry from the team that gave up 622 yards to UW-L in the season opener a year ago.

I'm really looking forward to getting a look at the team in person Saturday vs. Linfield.  Should be another great game.

GO COWBOYS!!!
