Le me be the first to say . . .
Welcome to the board texas2step.  Always good to have another voice.  Are you a TLU supporter?  We don't get many of them around here.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Hey guys brand new to the board.  I am a graduate of UMHB (and yes I went to school with Toby!)   I have been reading for a couple of years now and finally decided to join in.  I am looking forward to learning more about other schools in the ASC and around the region.

Toby,

This is Heath Peloquin.

Welcome heath.  I trust the family is well.  I look forward to more posts

Thanks Toby it is good to be apart of the conversation for a change.  I have been reading for about two years now and thought it is time to join.  The family is good, Jenny and the kids are great!

I do have a couple of questions.  It seems to me that LC is playing well with a possible drive to tie HSU last weekend ending in great defense.   Can anyone speak to LC's resurgence?

Second, I want to commend the HSU coaching staff for the quick turn around in the attitude for the Cowboy's defense.  What are HSU faithful seeing as the focus and cause for such a change.  Mere coaching philosophy or new personnel on the defensive side of the ball?  I know it is early, but we have a reunion of sorts coming up :)  Until then, go CRU one game at a time!

I'm trying to be one.  Losing a game is not the end of the world and losing to UMHB is really okay because everybody loses to them.  But you have to compete to the end, coaches and players.  I didn't see that Saturday.  TLU needs to make a commitment to winning

Greetings, Heath!  Welcome to the hard line...

I think LC's improvement this year was somewhat to be expected.  This is Dennis Dunn's third year, and he has much credibility in that part of the world when it comes to recruiting.  They also have some improved facilities.  They're on the come--I predict they'll probably finish third in the ASC this year.

RE: last weekend's game between HSU and LC...as much as I think LC has improved, and as much as I like their team, I really don't think the score was indicative of actually how much better HSU was.  Look at the stats, and look at the fact that HSU had to settle for three field goals really deep in LC territory...it just wasn't, IMO, as close a game as the score indicated.  HSU's offense will more often than not score TDs in those situations, but giving credit to LC's defense, they tightened up when they had to.

I think the HSU defensive turnaround is based on two things, really.  First, those guys were predominantly freshmen and sophomores last year.  They got a year of experience, and have improved as a result.  HSU brought in what appear to be a couple of hard-nosed new coaches, which was also good for that unit.  I'm looking forward to seeing them in person for the first time next weekend at UMHB.

Given the unfortunate injury to Daniels and HSU's improved defense (especially against the run), I think next weekend could be a real nail-biter.  Assuming of course that both teams take care of business this weekend.

Josh,

Thanks for the information it is helpful.  I am grateful to be apart of the thread.  I also agree that next weekend could be one of those instant HSU/UMHB classics.  Hardin-Simmons always prepares well for UMHB.  UMHB also plays HSU well.  It should make for another thriller in this rivalry.  I agree that both teams must take care of business this weekend first.

texas2step,

Welcome to you as well.  Thanks for the email.

Two new posters in one day...

Welcome!

CUAfan

Hi everyone! Some of you may remember me from the basketball and baseball forums. Never posted here before, as CTX doesn't have a football team. Anyway, I'm really into stats and I thought I'd take a stab at projecting the scores for the coming week using points scored and allowed per possession. Still some kinks to work out and it's only based on 2/3 games worth of numbers, but let's see how close I get.  :P

Hardin-Simmons 27, Mississippi College 25 in 12 possessions
Sul Ross State 20, Howard Payne 19 in 13 possessions
Mary Hardin-Baylor 43, McMurry 10 in 11 possessions
East Texas Baptist 35, Texas Lutheran 19 in 12 possessions
Let's go 'Nados!

CUAfan,

I always appreciate people stepping out like you did, but I'll be surprised if the games come out like that.  I think HSU will score at least 30.  The offense is potent and MC hasn't been a defensive stalwart this season.  I think UMHB will put big numbers up on McM, and I think the ETBU number will be higher if TLU doesn't fix some of what I watched last week.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

CUAfan

Honestly, so will I...but I'm interested to see how close (or how far off) they are, as well as if it gets any closer as the season goes on and it's based on a bigger sample.

I broadcasted TLU games in 99 and 2000.  Since then they have only posted one winning season to my knowledge and that was when Coach Mueller took them to 7-2.  TLU needs to make the committment to winning by spending some money to hire a coach with a winning COLLEGE record or eliminate the program all together.  I would rather have no team than have one that consistently hangs out in the basement of the ASC.  We are better than that.  Our Baseball team knows how to win on a regular basis and is one the most respected in Division III.  Our football program needs tofollow suit.

One key area where we miss out is that we do very little recruiting in Central Texas.  Coach Fred knows how to get these kids and they are ok with waiting 2 and 3 years to make the travel squad just to have the opportunity to say they were with "The Cru".  The more I learn about UMHB's football program and Coach Fred the more respect I have for them and understand why there is so much school spirit on and off campus and in the surrounding community.  You will not find the same in Seguin, TX.

Man I wish TLUGoat was still on the board.......

.....The Cru D played pretty good.....bending but not breaking. I seen countless holds that were not called....particularly No. 64 for TLU. He had no answer for Mark Manning other than a handful of jersey. Adam Aguilera  had a heck of a game....

As for TLU holds, check this TLU website pic out ...is that a UMHB player with a handful of FACEMASK?? GOSH WALLY!

http://www.tlu.edu/i/athletics/football/images/2008/TLUFootballatMaryHardinBaylor92008/tlu_football_umhb_92008088.html

And in this one nobody has a football but there is a purple hand with a fistful of White jersey?? OH GOSH!!!

http://www.tlu.edu/i/athletics/football/images/2008/TLUFootballatMaryHardinBaylor92008/tlu_football_umhb_92008063.html

I only point these out because there are plenty of missed calls on both sides of the football that could have changed game dynamics.  However, good football players, coaches and fans should never use them as a reason for missed opportunities.  This is especially true of UMHB.  Any team UMHB plays in the ASC could hold and facemask all day long and UMHB has the perseverance and pride to win plain and simple.  They are what all D-III programs should attempt to emulate.

TLU sucked plain and simple.  And not just because they were expected to lose to UMHB.  They STRUGGLED with Sul Ross and had to go to OT to win!!!!!

When oh when will the football gods shine mercifully on Seguin,TX and TLU??? HMMMMMMMM

While looking through the TLU site I found this picture of Quincy Daniels lone carry.  Knees shouldn't bend like that.  Am I right Dr. Turner?

Knees were not meant to bend that way!

OUCH!  Reminds me of when Joe Theisman took that hit to the leg from Lawrence Taylor (Am I dating myself?)

TLU has two problems, 1) No Ground Game and 2) No defense.  As we say in Belton "'Nuff Said!"  I am sick and tired of getting hyped for football season only to be let down in the first three games of the season.  Heaven Help Us!
