In recent years, UMHB has been able to put pressure on the QB.  They will need to do that again this year.  The kicking game has also been huge in deciding the outcome.  For the past few years, these have both favored the Cru.

Bill,

I could not agree more.  Every year it seems that the game will come down to defense, and turnovers.  If UMHB is to win then we will have to win these two categories.  Historically, it is a great game and a great rivalry.

Hey, when are we going to name this game anyway.  I live in Corpus Christi and there is a "Battle of the Bridge", "Battle by the Bay" or a battle for something.  We have been playing this game for awhile and is there any thoughts to a name for this clash?  (with that there will need to be a trophy, something CRU and something Cowboy! with a reunion theme of course) ;)

minni

defense wins championship's...you guys are stating the obvious..win two of the three aspects of the game and you will win it 99% of the time.  if you can win defense and special teams you have a good chance at winning.  UMHB has done that the past several years but hopefully with a new defensive scheme put in by new coaches maybe it will match up better with UMHB.  Hey i may be stirring the pot but you know what if i didnt back HSU it would have been well where all the HSU supporters this year??  Threw the good, bad and ugly i'll always always always support coach K and the cowboys.

Agreed Bill....Mark Manning and Adam Aguilera are very quick and can get after the QB along with many many other great players on the Cru defense. UMHB's defense has always brought alot of pressure with different forms of blitz packages. Which is why they seem to always have a problem with the deep ball. The corners are on an island most of the time. I don't see this weekend being any different. UMHB will stuff the run, pressure the QB, give up a deep ball or two, give up the short passes, and tighten down in the red zone. Just like they've done for the last 6 years. Other than the one loss to HSU in the past 6 years were we gave up 224 yards and 3 TD's to Lance Moore. Compared to only 52 yards 4 weeks later in the playoffs. We all know the outcomes of those 2 games.

Just to touch on the History of the rivalry.....
1998-Not sure as I couldn't find any stats....someone might can find them.

1999- 28-21 HSU

2000- 21-7 HSU

2001- 30-27 HSU....Tight game including the infamous Rochon misque!!

2002- 35-16 UMHB...Cody Fred goes down in the first half....The General (T.J. Theis) leads UMHB to its biggest win in UMHB history (to date)

2003- 43-36 UMHB...First HSU loss in Shelton in a long time....Infamous Matt Maskosky non-fumble...One of my most memorable games.

2004- RS..49-22 HSU...Lance Moore lights up UMHB with 224 yards rushing...Turnovers kill the Cru Offense. Cru ends up passing trying to get back in the game.

2004- PO..42-28 UMHB...UMHB's first step to the National Championship run...Josh Kubiak goes off on the Cowboys in Abilene

2005- 38-7 UMHB...Cru beats the hell out of the Cowboys in Shelton in front of a very quite Cowboy crowd...Due to a team altering injury to Jordan Neal earlier in the season...Brent Gailey had a rather humerous run in with the Po Po's..LOL Cru's locker room is broken into during the first half...Get em Andy...

2006- RS..28-16 UMHB...Cru plays a pretty good game and beats a surging Cowboy squad. Mr. Neal returns to Belton...runs for his life all game...and via the Cowboy fans sitting in front of me at the game....was blamed for the loss.

2006- PO- 33-21 UMHB...Cru runs for 371...HSU runs for 14. UMHB controls the ground game and the clock and wins a great game.

2007- 47-14...UMHB...Cru blasts the Cowboys in Shelton in front of a rather anemic HSU crowd. Visitor stands were fuller and louder...I think this is the game that HSU realized their place in the ASC..... ;D

2008- We'll see....looking to be a great game. Hope alot of Cowboy fans make the trip to Belton. Don't see HSU shutting down UMHB's running attack....See the Cru Defense bending but not breaking...Think the Cru will have a huge step on HSU in special teams due to overall team speed.

HSU vs. UMHB history....excluding 1998 season.

4-7 UMHB

UMHB's 7 wins by an average of 18.28 points...
HSU's 4 wins by and average of 12.75 points...
Walking on thin ice cuz someone lost......again.

yessir,  the kicking game favored HSU in the first 2004 game.  Big plays on defense in the 2nd.  The defense has been the deciding factor in each of the games since.

Bill McCabe

minni, with the new scheme on defense, have they added speed?  I haven't seen HSU play and only go by what I read on here.  It looks like the offense is as potent as ever, but the defense has given up yards and points.  However, they haven't lost, so something is going right.

Toby Taff

The HSU defense is faster than they were last year.  They seem to be pursuing well in the games I've watched, but are inconsistent.  It'll be interesting to see how they fair.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

minni

Bill, I have no idea I guess just wishful thinking and hopeing on my part.  But I am basing the ideas on results from this year and the defense is older this year as they had lots of freshmen and sophmores last year.

yessir

Anybody know the results of the rivalry in 1998.

Minni was referring to the score in the 1998 HSU vs. UMHB game.  I don't think that was a prediction!
