QB quick punt from the 40 trying to pin it deep doesn't help your net.

28 yards is 28 yards.  Are you telling me all their punts are QB quick punt.  Come on, get real.  ;D

Carlisle and McKnight are the two best corners I've seen for HSU in the last few years.  Not taking anything away from some of the good guys that have been there (i.e. Hansen, Galusha), but I've not seen both sides of the ball this solid at the same time since Terrance Fryer and DeNarious Robinson.  That's why they're #1 in the conference in pass defense (and 35th, nationally).

IMO, that's the reason HSU has given up more yardage on the ground this year.  Teams are having zero success throwing the ball against them.  What the statistics don't show is that HSU has given up only 3 rushes of more than 20 yards this year (with a long rush against them of only 34 yards, which came in the first game of the season)--so the rush defense has very much been a bend-but-don't-break effort.

Josh,
The pass defense is very good and forces turnovers, no doubt. But it's not just the total yards on the ground, it's the 4.7 yards per carry that is still 3rd worst in the ASC. That's pretty bad compared to the other playoff teams. The two best rushing teams they played were MC and UMHB. MC ran for 296 yard on 53 carries (5.6 ypc) and UMHB went for 358 on 73 carries (4.9 ypc).

I think HSU is solid and is probably the ASC's best team for a possible matchup with Millsaps, but the matchup with UMHB exposes their one weakness. I think you could do some damage in the playoffs if you can just get past UMHB.

Chris,  HSU has always had a strong, physical defense, but their front 7 has lacked speed.  I think this is the main reason they give up so many rushing yards.  Even though they haven't given up many long runs, it sure eats up time of possession.

I'm sorry.  You're right. Only 15 of 28 punts were by the QB.

Weak Safety,  Feaster averaged 34.6 yards which is not bad and the QB quick kick is very effective at pinning back the other team.  I'm not sure what the return average is and that may be what brings down the net.  Larson has averaged 32.9 yards.  My only point is that the kicking game is huge in a game between 2 good teams.

wow bill did you just say something nice about Justin Feaster and HSU. Kuddos to you in your infinate wisdom about football and how much better your program is than everyone else. This is what make the rivalry so great and what makes HSU want to kick your A** each time you play.

umhb2001

You can try in about 49 hours!!   :o
Watch out for the wreckingCRU defense!!

Weak Safety,

You NEED to go to Belton, I can drive a future lil cowboy and his mother to the hospital if need be.

And if you do go to Belton you can sleep on my couch for the next week.

Good Luck HSU

cowboyfan, I think UMHB feels the same way about HSU!   :)   Everytime I've been to this game I always held my breath because I knew HSU was a good team and capable of making big plays.  UMHB has had the upper hand for the past few years, but there were only a couple of games that weren't in doubt and one of those was a win by HSU in Belton.

Forgive me for relying on your research again...but, any TV coverage of the the Texas Tangle this weekend?

umhb2001

You would think so, but no.  I know that UMHB is working on a plan to have games over the internet.

Penn Atlantic is covering these games: http://pennatlantic.com/main.php?tableName=event&fileName=results&recordId=&module=event-results&orderBy=&searchIt=yes&sport=100&month=11&day=22&year=2008&conferenceId=0&schoolId=0

I don't know when UMHB will be able to do something like this, but it would be nice.

Storylines are always huge in games like these.  High powered Cowboy offense against a stingy Cru defense.  I know that Feaster's arm is a key to the HSU offense and he has weapons to throw to at the receiver position.  Given time he can pick a defense apart.  I know that the Cowboys will expect him to play well.  For the Cru, with the emergence of Bryson Tucker (one of our leading defensive players at the start of the season) at tailback how much of a difference should it make for the Cru offense Saturday?  I think that has to be one of the underlining stories for this ball game, with the resurregence of the running game for the Cru, this has to help having both Hurst and Sanchez healthy for this game.  Also can anyone tell me how Noack has progressed so quickly?  I watched him in the season opener, he has a great arm and is fearless in the pocket.  Josh Saenz, QB, is a competitor himself especially with his agility and quickness, but Kyle does have quiet an arm.  UMHB must make plays defensively, while HSU will look to strike early and often.  My heart rate must have jumped while writing this post, the adreneline is flowing and it is only Thursday!

Go Cru Go!  Go Cru Go!  Go Cru Go!  Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuusaders!

Part of the problem is that, unless things have changed, the school district that owns the stadium doesn't know it's the 21st century and there is no broadband connectivity.  You might be able to try and send video via a cell connection but it would probably be pretty iffy.

It's really surprising given UMHB's success that they don't do something.  You could do live stats over dialup or cellular WAN.

Toby Taff

they have started doing live stats ron.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Congrats to Feaster!
