Mr. Ypsi

We claim General Grant for his retirement (and burial) home in Galena, IL.  However, you are more than welcome to President Grant! ;D

the Maurice Claretts of college athletics are what troubles me.

There are hundreds of thousands of Maurice Claretts of the world that never went to college in the first place so how is it any more troubling for him to have done what he has done versus the rest who never make it into the 'lime-light' in the first place, but still turn out just like him?

I think you took my meaning a little too literally I was saying the Maurice Claretts plural, I meant all the examples of college kids who got in on athletic scholarship and becasue there was no accountability for whatever reason took a wrong path.  I didn't mean just specifically the OSU player.  And for every Maurice Clarett there is a Troy Smith who turns thier life around because they were given the chance.

I meant every scholarship athlete who makes similar self-destructive choices

Its a hard issue no doubt about it

Its a very hard issue, but the universities have the answer and hold it llocked inside their safes and bank accounts: $$$

If Ohio can't have Grant, will you allow it George Armstrong Custer?

Its all too true and too sad. If the NCAA put a little more of that money in...oh say Education...maybe we could actually teach a collegiate athlete. ???

I'll throw one more log on the fire with respect to the elephant in the room in D1 college football. (Attention ND haters: Ignore where this came from and read what the man has to say.  It makes a lot of sense.)

Its allways been about the money, I wonder is there any money in D-III? I mean significant money, does Mount Union make money off its football team or is it self sustaining..etc etc.  Do the rest of you think D-III schools make money off thier athletics  ( I know not even close to scale with D-I)

If you look at the finances of the MUC football program like you would for a D1 school like Ohio State, with income coming from ticket sales, concessions, apparel, etc.  And the expenses are things like equipment, coaches salaries, etc, then the MUC program looses money.  Where the positive cash flow comes from is the 200 players that are paying $25k per year to attend the school.

With attendance being what it is at the D3 level, I can't imagine there is any D3 college in America that actually and directly makes any money from their football programs.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

If MUC had no football program, would those 200 spots be filled anyway?

That IS the $64,000 question (or, in this case, the $5,000,000 question)!

I know nothing about the MUC situation (how many viable applicants, especially males, they turn away, etc.), but there has been talk on various boards of schools starting fball programs to address extreme gender imbalance - some schools have found (or at least believed) that it was the only way to increase male enrollment.

Ohio can't claim Custer, I do believe he was a  wolverine from Monroe.

I'm 100% confident in answering this as NO.  As well as some of the general student body.

Someone probably has the exact numbers, but when MUC made their first Stagg appearance in 1993, I thought the entire enrollment was around 1,300.  And at this time the campus wasn't anything to look at.  In fact when my brother played there in the late 1970's, you could classify the campus as a complete dump.  Once the Kehres Machine got rolling, alumni contributions went thru the roof and major upgrades/building programs were made around campus.  With that came an increase in overall enrollment to the current level of 2,300+/-.  The benefit from the public exposure of the MUC football team can't be measured, but I don't think it's a coincidence that the major improvements to the campus and the growth in the enrollment happened AFTER the football program became dominant.

I can't remember whether this still applies in 2007, but another number that sticks in my head too is that approximately 1 out of every 4 freshmen boys on campus plays football.

Kira & Jaxon's Dad

My Freshman year at Mount Union was 1990-1991 and I think the enrollment at that time was somewhere around 1,500-1,700.  My HS was about 1,000 and I thought it was at least 500 more, but I am not positive.  There was only one "New Dorm" at the time and that was right next to East Hall and ATO.

Many donations since then have come and I would say that most were influenced by the positive attention the football success has brought to the college.
