For Mt. Union Fans,

Never been to Alliance and the AAA book sez you only have 2 hotels there. Looking for a decent place to stay for the Averett game on Labor Day weekend. Any suggestions?

Also for those of you who drove down to Virginia last year, which way would be best to come up to Alliance and what was your travel time?

Holiday Inn Express on State Street or the Comfort Inn at the Carnation mall are the best in Town.  You can also stay in Canton, OH (Belden Village Area has Hampton Inn, Fairfield Inn off the top of my head) and Canton is just a short trip from Alliance.  Come early and go see the NFL Hall of Fame.

Depending on your haste, it's a 6-8 hour drive straight up I77, except for the last 15 miles from Canton on Route 62. You might want to stay in Canton and take in the Football Hall of Fame. We could probably recommend a good Friday night football game in the area.

Don't look now Raider fans but the Arizona Wildcats just won softball national championship number 8 in their program's history.  They're creeping up on the MUC football team one championship at a time.

(And they are a little easier on the eyes while they do it.)
OAC Champs: 1942 (one title ties us with Ohio State)
OAC Runners-Up: 2017, 2016, 2015, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2004, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1982, 1941 (Stupid Mount Union!)
MOL Champs: 1952, 1950

I would recommend Belden area in North Cantonto Averett fans as there are many more restaurants and hotel/motel opportunities.  Most major hotel/motel chains and restaurants are represented there, and it is an easy 25 minutes or so from ALliance.  Also the HOF is 5 minutes from there if you want to visit...

hscoach or kirasdad,

Any other info on future Raider players coming in this fall. I searched The Review and only came up with the All-Star write up for Mahoning County but no real info on where the players were going next. Same with the Repository and Beacon, not much there either. I can only remember reading about the QB from CA so far and ususally there has been something written about other prospects. Another large class? Just wondering.

Here's three from Youngstown: Credit the  Vindicator
Three local standouts will continue their football careers at Mount Union.

Mooney senior Jack Zizzo, a 6-foot-2, 235-pound defensive end, was a three-year letterwinner at Mooney, earning all-Steel Valley Conference honors last fall and helping the Cardinals win state titles in 2004 and 2006. He plans to major in communications/journalism.

Hubbard senior linebacker Mike Maietta (6-2, 225) was a three-year letterman for the Eagles, earning all-conference, all-county and all-district honors last fall. He plans to major in education.

McDonald senior linebacker Christopher Mark (5-10, 205) was a three-year letterman for the Blue Devils, earning second team all-league honors as a junior and a senior and all-county honors as a senior. He plans to major in political science.

My father watched the Pigskin Classic North/South All-Star game this weekend at UD's Welcome Stadium.  He sat near the family of a Capital recruit.  I did a little research and found out the player in question is an OL from Carlisle named Randy Swain.  He is on the game roster listed at 5-10, 245 but he will apparently wrestle and play football at Cap.  He finished 8th in state in the 215 lb division according the OHSAA website.

I don't know if any of the other players in the game are heading to OAC schools.

Thanks seventies.

Good to see some of my home towns talent headed for the Raiders.

The Youngstown Vindicator.....memories. Like I mentioned earlier I am surprised I have not seen much of anything in the Akron or Canton Rags.

Do you happen to know if they are expecting the same size class as ususal?

From what I've seen there will be as many if not more than past years, but from a lot of different places. I see three coming from Sarasota Flordia from two different schools. Not just the little Ohio boys with bad knees ;D ;D ;D

I remember when being the "kid from Omaha" in the freshman class was a big deal, back "in the day." 8)

I don't have much info on incoming freshmen, but there is one name that was talked about quite a bit last year that has resurfaced.  Drew Kuhn from Louisville decided that he missed playing football after all.   Supposedly he'll be playing at safety (which is where I'd put him too  ;D)

Hopefully he's taking this return to football seriously as he was an absolute stud in HS and would be a very nice addition to the depth chart.  If he returns to previous form, I would expect him to be a good return man on the punt and KO teams as well.

Personally, I'm pulling for him for a couple different reasons:
1.  Always like to see the local NBC guys play at MUC
2.  Good kid from a good family
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

HScoach

Oh, and the latest rumor I heard on Perci Garner from Dover is that he's turned down MUC and Capital to go to Ball State.

To Kirasdad, Seventiesraider & RaiderPa,

Thanks for the information on where to stay and go in and around Alliance. My wife and I are looking forward to the trip, however your 6-8 hour trip will take us 12 hours (eating and bathroom breaks take up a little time). I hope Averett will be able to offer a little more competion this year, however we are trying having to replace a lot of Seniors. Makes no difference though, I really enjoyed watching a well coached and powerfull football team last year. And believe it or not, the experience was great for the players. They didn't get down because of the score, they actually used it for a learning experience. That game allowed them to see where they need to be in order to go to the next level. It really helped them have a great season last year.

Again, look forward to coming to Alliance, hope there is room for the vistors to be able to tailgate.

My wife has already figured that she will need her winter coat by labor day. She has been researching the history of the temps in your area during that time of year. And anything below 70 is winter to her.

Again, thanks and see ya'll in Sept.

raiderguy

hscoach,

That is a good rumor about Drew. I read enough about him last year that it sounds like he will make a nice addition to the team. He played in one of the All-Star games last summer as I recall and he was rated as one of the top 100 players in Ohio. It is one way to red shirt without red shirting but I hope his fire is really burning. He will learn from some of the Raiders best and comes in at a perfect time with all the graduations at the end of this season on defense.

I look forward to future updates. It will be fun to see Marietta up here in week one also. I think there are two coaches on their staff that are Mount grads?

Thanks again.

Ole Perci is getting lots of mention on here based on "rumors".
The kid is probably getting quite a kick out of it too.
You dont think he supplies the rumors himself, do you? Anybody check Ball States website to see if hes reported as a recruit? If it is  published there then I will have to believe it....but until then....well.
