Kenyon's not in the OAC.

I never said the pack would catch up to Mount anytime soon, just that with passage of x amount of time and change, it will happen someday.

OSU's not nationally competitive in baseball and it's not even the best program in the weakest region for the sport in D-I. They haven't been close in women's basketball either since Katie, getting a bloated 1 or 2 seed and bowing out in the second round isn't contending. The only time OSU has played to seed under Foster is when they were a 6, and yes, losing in the second round.

LSU has been to 4 straight women's final 4's, went to the men's final 4 two years ago, won football and won 5 baseball titles.

Texas has won football, baseball and women's basketball (not recent, but they have won one) and been to a recent final 4 in men's basketball.

Point is that Grand Valley's in a unique position among non BCS schools athletically and comparing them and Mount Union is apples and oranges. GVSU could probably move up to I-AA, there's no way anything but football would be even passable in D-II at Mount and the school would lose millions of dollars a year.
Most likley Mount would do very well in Track and Cross Country.  Maybe not national contenders but very competitive.

Kenyon's not in the OAC.

When they started the current streak of swimming championships they were.

BTW Mount would probably do better in DII Track and Field as DIII is highly competetive

(I had a few minutes to research the above comment and Mount was tied for 8th at DIII Nationals, they would have tied for 14th in DII. Not better, but still pretty impresive.)
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...

I don't know of another school in any division that is regionally to nationally competitive in all four.

Spence

You said "regionally to nationally competitive", not in a championship game every year.  By your original criteria, OSU is right there.  I just used the criteria you typed and I can't help the fact you didn't mean what you wrote.  Weak region or not OSU baseball has been "regionally to nationally competitive" just like you wrote.

How can OSU be considered regionally competitive when they've won all of two regionals in their coach's 20 years? I think Marshall was in the top 25 more than two years out of the past 20...are they regionally competitive too (in something other than extra monetary support for players)? They'll find out how not regionally competitive they are when West Virginia and their fans take over Huntington lol.

Regardless, LSU and Texas are more competitive by whatever measure you want to use, and I did say that Grand Valley was in a unique position of having potentially regional or national championship caliber teams in all four "major" sports, and that's where the comparison with LSU and Texas was drawn. Ohio State isn't a regional championship caliber program most years, even when you consider that there are 16 watered-down regional champions in baseball, and only 4 in basketball. IMO the real regional championship since they went to 64 teams is the super regional. TheD-I regionals are mostly boring these days...one of the teams is cannon fodder and another often is too...usually it comes down to the top two seeds.

OK it appears my well-meant comparison has dragged us offtopic, so let's get back to having people complain about Mount Union needing to go D-II. :)

Spence,
Kenyon won 37 OAC championships in swimming between 1938-1984.  Kenyon left the OAC after the season in 1984.  They've won 21 conference titles so far in NCAC.

You have to actually see it in print to appreciate how many national championships they've won:

Good article on Bill Walsh:

Anybody who thinks MTU should move up doesn't understand what they're talking about or is just slow upstairs (I didn't say stupid, thought it, but didn't say it).

I appreciate the warm welcome from everyone.
Look, I apologize for bringing this up. I am new to the site, and didn't have time to go back through the Archives, to see if this has been discussed. It was not meant to sound like a complaint. I was simply curious, if it has been discussed. I for one, am happy Mount is part of the OAC(being a Muskie fan). It presents a huge challenge every year, to prepare and play the Purple Raiders. After all, to be the best, you have to beat the best.

A Muskie fan?

Like the commercial where Santa runs into the M&M guys... "they do exist" [then faints]

15 days and a wake-up left at Fort Lewis for the summer.  When I return, the smell of football will be distinctly in the air, even in KY this year  ;D

IS IT FOOTBALL SEASON YET?

Just stick around.  That's all I ask for.

MUC is always well-represented in here.  There's a handful of us from ONU.  Etta has one regular poster, JCU has a couple good guys but they're out and about a lot.  CAP has grown a great deal in support over the last five years or so.

It seems like every time we get a fan of OTT, WILMA, the Berg, or even BW they make a couple quick post and disappear in no time.

So just stick around and root for your fish.

As a mount fan, and rare poster, I'm making myself nervous about the coming season.  I've never bee able to make it to a game in Salem, but just got hired to a school in Greensboro, NC...just a few hours from there.  Now with the chance to maybe see a game, my being so close could be the downfall of the program!  Here's to hoping the Purple and Black prove me wrong!

A few new faces on both sides of the ball.  QB, RB and WR should be ok :), couple of former starting O-Lineman back from injuries.  DTs, LBs and 3/5ths of the Secondary are back.  DEs are new starters and some new upperclassmen taking over starting roles in the secondary.  Pretty much just reloading and time for the new upperclassmen to step up to the plate.

See Ric's site for a great preview by Mark Grossman: MTU Preseason Preview.

Sorry, Muskie1, there are a few things that get rehashed year after year.  I should have noticed you were new to the board.  Welcome.  The more the merrier.
