Hey JK!

As a CAP guy, that hire has to make you feel pretty good.  Maintaining the continuity, and keeping the guy there that was an architect of that great CAP defense.

Hopefully (well maybe not for us Mount fans) he will hire an "offensive guru" to amp up the CAP offense.

I am all for making the OAC conference as strong, and competitive as possible.  I think this hire will help keep CAP at the top.

Congrats to coach Jim Bickel.... This is a great hire and I am very happy for him..  As Coach said about his players i'll say about him, "he is one tough hombre".

Coach Bickel recruited me out of HS and seemed to be the most honest of all the recuriters...   I was able to play one season for him before moving over to offense.   He was honest enough with me to tell me that if i switched i would probably start on offense rather than rotate on defense... i am very glad that i made the choice to switch, things worked out best for both ....
Just an all around great person

Congrats
from season 05

It does.  I think as soon as it was announced that Bickel wasn't going to go with Collins to SVSU, he was the front runner and it was his job to lose.  It just made so much sense to hire him.  He knows the school, the current players, the potential recruits, and the systems.  He's been the architect of one of the best defenses in the conference and the country the past few years.  Plus, by all accounts he is a great guy who wants to be there.  I think you will see many more posts like the one by 2minuteO and others who played for him and know him far better than I do.

As for his OC, it is rumored that Mike Ancona is leaving Cap.  He would have been my first choice as OC.  There are rumors that Rocky might be in the running for the job, but I suspect his relative inexperience will preclude him from getting the job.  There are also rumors that a Columbus area HS coach is interested.  We will see how it all shakes out soon.

I feel pretty confident in saying that the success in Columbus will continue.

Skunks or Mount guys,

Any idea if Raeburn is going after the Wabash job?  Very nice background & credentials.  Now that Cap has hired Bickel, maybe that makes the Wabash job the one he wants.  Just curious.  Any other names??

BB 16.....

I can honestly say that I haven't talked to any Mount sources who are in regular contact with Raeburn as to if he was interested in any other coaching job besides the one he has.  One would think he would like to get back to the OAC, but other than that I have no clue.

Anyone else?

Small but Slow

I went to the NCAA web site to see what was going on with the division of D3 and found some of the areas they are basing the split on to be odd, or at least not what I expected.  Coaching staff sizes and salaries seem to be the basis for much of the division.  I may be way off, but it was my belief that most D3 coaches still teach at least a class or two, even in season.  Even many of the assistant coaches not employed full time by the college where they coach are either high school teachers or earn most of their income from another job.  My point is that I seriously doubt many D3 schools have many (if any) full time football coaches at this time.

Small but Slow,

Slow day in the classroom today for you to be perusing the NCAA website.  ;)

small but slow:

That might be true for many of the DIII (smaller DIII schools).  However, I can tell you that in our MIAA, most, if not all of the schools have 4 full-time assistants who are full-time with the college.  Some of the schools, like Hope, require their coaches to teach classes, others like Alma don't necessarily require that i.e. some of the coaches are near full-time recruiting in the off-season of fb and/or also assistants in other sports.  Yet, you are right in that in most cases the remaining staff is comprised of assistant coaches who either work at other jobs, teach at h.s. schools and/or are pursuing post-graduate degress.  In addition, some of these assistants are indeed "full-time" during the season, while others are what I call "part-time-full-time" assistants in that they are "full-time" with the program i.e. all season including pre-season, yet are only coaching perhaps 3-4 days out of the week aside from "game day".  Of course, the truly full time coaches of a staff are paid the most (since they are "on-salary") while the other assistants receive varying coaching stipends for the season which varies much among schools - it can be a pitance or it can be more.  I do know, however, that some high school assistant coaches (even if they are not teaching at the school) receive tremendously more than some small college assistance.  Overall, it is just "the nature of the business" and comes down to the what each college is willing and/or able to budget for their program.  Just my .02 worth! ;)

kirasdad - My research actually began as work related.  Checking eligibility requirements for DIII athletes.  I know of a couple of fine athletes who haven't quite qualified for DI eligibility.

former3db - Thanks for the information.  I've been away too long, I guess.  When I was at MUC the football coaches, except the head coach, who was also AD, taught at least one class during the season.  I guess I assumed from reading coaching bios from some college websites things hadn't changed much.  To me this seems more of a choice by the college administration to be competitive or not rather than a reason to divide the classification.

It looks like K C Keeler is still building his teams with transfers. Ohio State backup QB Robby Shoenhoft is transferring to Delaware. This should be interesting. Oh well, if Tressel gets his recruit from Pa. they all might be transferring somewhere to play. The scouts think the kid is another cant miss QB. ( Isnt that what they said about Justin Zwick?)   :)
