I'd hope if I was a CAP fan that the offense becomes more two-dimensional.

I DO hope that, but I really have no idea what will happen.  What I do know is that Coach Matsakis was an assistant at Wyoming (under Dana Dimel, I believe- a Joe Tiller disciple) and Texas Tech (Mad Genius Mike Leach), both schools known for slinging it all over the place.  Following the logic that most coaches tend to display some of the traits of their mentors, it would seem logical to assume that the Cap offense will look similar under Matsakis.

But, again, I have no idea.  I've never seen any tapes or even looked at old game or season stats from Matsakis coached teams to have any real data to make that assessment, just the logic mentioned above.

Was he just a kicker in college?  At NJCU when they had a football team, the starting middle linebacker was also the punter and kicked off quite often.

As best I can remember he was only a kicker, but that was way before my time (10 years or so).

I'm also starting to doubt the legitamacy of my post about him being a straight on kicker as well.  There was a kicker a few years later named Dellapina (who also moonlighted as a DT) who was a stright on-er.  I might have gotten them confused, and I am unable to verify.  If I remember correctly from when I was there I think I remember Coach Welsh mentioning that Matsakis was also a straight on kicker.  A guy by the name of Chad Duncan was our kicker in my first 2 years at Cap and he was a soccer-styler.  I remember him hitting a pretty long FG, and I think I remember Coach Welsh saying in meetings the next week that it was the longest FG at Cap by a soccer style kicker, as Matsakis has the longest FG, Dellapina the second longest, and then Matsakis has the 3rd and 4th longest, followed by a guy from '86 named Jeff Fields, who, if what I remember actually happend, would also have been a straight on kicker.  Those years in the 80's were when soccer style kickers started replacing the stright on kickers, so it is entirely possible.

And, if I'm not, does it really matter?  ;D

You can file a Freedom of Information Act request and get the salary of a coach at a state school since they are state employees. There's nothing I know of that forces a private school to divulge that info.

Anyone with their ear to the ground have any thoughts/info about the Matietta opening. I can't see Marietta not looking for someone with local (Ohio, W VA, Penn) ties. The last couple of choices flew home the first chance they got.

How about Don Montgomery or Matt Campbell.

Would Montgomery want to come back to Marietta?  Don't know if that is a step up from E & H.

How about Stan Watson.  He has been the DC for Monty since he has been at E & H.

I could see Matt Campbell as good candidate.

I just threw Monty out there. I'm sure he has something to prove at E&H before he goes anywhere else.

Watson would be an excellant candidate.

My memory may not be reliable, but didn't Monty turn down an offer from Marietta a couple of years before he went to E&H?

My last week in the Army, and one of my Cadets commits suicide last night in his hometown.

Awful.  20 year old College Sophomore, no real outward signs other than flagging attendance in recent weeks.  His roomate was also a Cadet and said he hadn't noticed any outward signs either.

If you do that kind of thing, please pray for his family in Henderson, KY.  It's not right to have to bury your son.

Thanks, friends.

JK-Prayers to your cadet's family.

In other news, Mount's SID, resigned yesterday.  He is continuing to teach as an adjunct in communications, but has left his post in Public Information.--Too bad, I found him to be a great guy and it seemed to me he was doing a great job.  Someone told me that there was some friction between him and LK though.

Sorry to hear we're losing Mike. He has always done a great job from my vantage point. I was always impressed with game stories and photos that were up on the college website before I got home. Best of luck to him. Sometimes you just get to a point were you need to move on in your life.

Sports Information is such an underappreciated field.  When you work with SID's as a broadcaster you quickly learn who the good ones are.  I have always heard good things about MUC's SID and know that the OAC has some great ones.  Tim Glon has done a great job at ONU for years and years.  Some athletic departments don't appreciate the good ones when they have them.  SID's can have a lasting impact beyond their ability to share information on their programs.  They make a first impression on recruits in the OAC because of the way their informational pieces look and feel.  I'd be lying if I said that the media guides from Marietta were no competition for the ONU info I looked at as a senior in high school.  It put a notch in the "ONU" column for me in the recruiting process.

Hopefully MUC fills the position and doesn't miss a beat.  It's a tough position to take over since it's pretty much a guarantee that MUC gets more traffic than many division III participants.  I also think that when a good SID leaves a post, the successor has a tough job because the look is probably strong and already has a solid appearance.  When a new SID comes in where things are left in shambles, their opportunity to shine is that much easier in my opinion.

reality check, seventies, theaprof and others:

Indeed, I couldn't agree with you more re: SID's.  I would just add that Tom Renner of Hope College is in that category and among the top in the business, including better than many DII and even some DI schools IMO.  He just stepped down as the MIAA's league SID/Publicist afte some nearly 40 years although he will remain as SID and Head of Public Relations at Hope.  He has won several awards for his work and service from national organizations to the league to the school.  Hope's Media Center at the DeVos Fieldhouse on campus was just recently named in he and his wife's honor.  The countless hours he (and his wife also) has put in over the years are astronomical and I'm not sure how he did it and still spent quality time with his family.  His publications for athletics as well as that for the college in all the activities, not just athletics are top quality.  So indeed, when a small college like Hope or Mount Union or ONU gets a person like the ones we are talking about, it is a tremendous plus/advantage.   My "hats off" to these people - they do alot for many, many people student-athletes and otherwise for the school, all unselfishly.  In reality (no pun intended on your nickname ;D), we can't thank these people enough.

Did hear a rumor going around that LK had a major role in this. But the rumor I heard was that he was going to finsih the year then go, so who knows.

Too bad to lose Mike. He did a great job for us.

JK

Mike DeMatties and Len Reich from CAP were, in my opinion, the two best SID's in the OAC.  MUC and CAP were the only two schools that consistently updated scores on their websites, made us of multi-media, like video, etc.  It really is a shame MUC is losing him.
