An interesting game in Alliance today.  I don't think I've ever seen so many different plays run from a punt formation by one team in one game.

Good to see you up and about Seventies, don't over do it now.
12-0 = 13

Franklin by 10 over North Central!  The Griz just might be the real thing.  Should be a great match up between Franklin and Wheaton next week.

What do we know about Cortland St.?

If we had the BCS in Division III we could watched Willamette play North Central the Stagg Bowl. I'm still sold on playoffs even if I think there are too many teams.

There are 240 D3 teams, 70s ... how few  do you think should make the post-season?

A comparison:

D3 : 32/240 = 13.3%
D2 : 24/148 = 16.2%
FCS : 16/125 = 12.8%

Now let's compare that with the number of D1 teams playing in a bowl this year:

FBS : 68/120 = 56.7%   ???

Now THAT'S too many teams!

Not a big deal but the 28 team field without the pointless #8 seeds and giving the #1 seeds the first week off worked but apparently wasn't enough money for the NCAA.

Gotta pay for those extra flights somehow.    ;)

For sure, if there was a D3 BCS!

Attended Whitewater vs Willamette today.  Perfect weather.  The game was never in doubt.  The final score makes it seem closer than it was.  Whitewater took a knee in the final minute when they could have easily added another TD.  Whitewater's running back, Antwan (pronounced Antoine) Anderson, is an excellent back.   Whitewater was confident, composed and methodical in their execution.  Willamette had a slow start, got behind 21-0, and it was over.  Willamette's passing attack finally got on track, but it was too late.  Whitewater owned the clock.

I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

Results for Round 2 and the spreads for Round 3 have been posted.

One of the most efficent D3 passers vs the 202th rated pass defence. Oh boy.

Maybe the spreads should be doubled!!

Good to see you today, Seventies!  I was expecting much more elaborate headgear--Was trying to figure out if we could cover the halo with lights for the Stagg bowl.  Oh well, back to plan B.
Reloading--Again, and again, and again....

Hope The Rev plans on bringing a box of hankies.  ;)  My bold prediction: 49-7

Darn close!!!  Your predictive powers are pretty good.

The Rev can console himself with the fact that a) the game came out as expected, b) Mt. Union fans have had many positive things to say about Hobart, which shows very good sportsmanship; c) Hobart actually fared better than most of Mt. Union's opponents did this season.  (42-7 doesn't hurt so bad when you realize that four other teams didn't even score.)

The Rev hopes his Statesmen have learned some lessons and come out next year ready to win more.

Here's to Hobart making it to at least the third round in 2009!!!

Thanks, Raider fans!

Although losing by 35 isn't exactly how TGP wanted to see this Bart team go out, he appreciates the congratulations and classy posts from all the OAC, MUC and LL/Eastern fans.  TGP missed most of the game due to travelling back to CA from FLA over the holiday weekend, but was somewhat appeased by reading some of the following commentary post-game (while sipping a couple jack on the rocks after tucking in the wife and kids):

Hobart senior linebacker Justin Hager recorded a game-high 20 tackles, [breaking] his own [single] game record.  He's the only Hobart player to record 20-plus tackles in a game more than once [i.e., this is the second time Hager has eclipsed the 20 tackle mark].  The effort raised his [2008 season] campaign total to 134, five more than Jesse Truley [Bart class of 96]'s 13-year old season record.

If this kid isn't a D3fb.com and NCAA 1st team All-American, it will be a damn shame.  Congrats to #40 on an absolutely outstanding football career (now it's time for Hager to get it going on the Lax field).

The Statesmen rushed for 104 yards, the second highest total against the Raiders this season.

TGP thought to have a chance to win, we'd need to be able to run it, but unfortunately 100+ yards isn't going to cut against a team that can easily crank out 500 yards of offense a week.

The Statesmen are the first team to hold the Raiders scoreless in a quarter other than the fourth (presumably when they let off the gas), while the 14 points mark the fewest for Mount Union in the opening 30 minutes this season.

It could have been a lot more interesting a game if Hobart could have done more with their passing game, but alas no luck.  TGP guesses if you're 42.5 pt underdogs (per the OAC pick em), you can take a lot of pride in shutting out MUC for a 2nd quarter and go into the half only down 14-0.  Would have been interesting if the wheels didn't fall off the bus in the 3rd quarter after Hobart made it 21-7, but TGP can take solace that at least the Statesmen did score a TD on the Raiders (which was equal if not better than 9 of the other teams that MUC beat this season).

The final point, TGP will make is that he appreciated the congratulations (how rare is it that your team gets a congratulatory slap on the back for losing by 35?) from Kmic, Kehres, etc:

"[Hobart] played very good defense," Kmic said. "They were very physical. I got hit pretty hard a couple times.  They had a lot of heart and played tough the whole game.  I give them a lot of credit."

"They were one of the toughest [teams we've faced]," sophomore free safety Chaz Jordan added from the defense's perspective. "They had a big o-line ... they ran the ball hard."

"My compliments to Hobart for bringing a great effort, battling us with everything they had," Mount Union Head Coach Larry Kehres added.
