Just heard from our OAC rep that Greg Micheli has been chosen by the NCAA as one of the TOP EIGHT athletes for the year--eight athletes chosen from all sports in all divisions and Greg lands one of the awards.

This is one of the highest collegiate athletic honors that can bestowed on anyone!!

CONGRATULATIONS GREG!!!!!
Outstanding!  Way to go, Greg and Mount Union!  :D

I concur, congrats to Greg.  Now I have to ask why Nate is not on the list of contenders for the Gagliardi trophy?  What's up with that?

Mom....needless to say, this particular topic has been hashed over and over.  First of all, a school may only nominate one player for the award.  Based upon the award criteria being slanted more toward overall excellence (athletic, academic, etc), it was felt by those in charge that Greg was a more viable candidate.  That is to take NOTHING away from Nate's accomplishments on the field.  However, Mr. Micheli is the complete package.

Is there a link to this recent award with the NCAA??

Nice mention about Mount that you may not have seen.

Also, each school can only nominate one player for the AFCA All-American team. I think you can rest assured that Nate Kmic was nominated for that award.

hs coach - Thanks for the breakdown of Cortland.  A quick comparison of the rosters shows that Cortland has a slight size advantage up front.  Stopping the Mount running game and making the Raiders one dimensional sounds like a good plan.  Wonder why nobody has ever tried that before?

Pat - My mistake on the spelling.  My Giulani question was more of a tongue in cheek rhetorical question, but you never know.  He could have changed the spelling a bit to throw off stalkers or paparazzi.

Out of curiosity, do you know the reasoning behind the one nomination rule?  If the best player at his respective position I think he should get the nod regardless of how many other players might be best at their respective positions.  I know it doesn't happen with most teams but if a team like MUC has three of the best at their spots in Division III, then they should all get the nomination IMO.  Spreading the wealth for the sake of having 20-something other schools on the list doesn't seem right.  Correct me if I'm misinterpreting.

Maybe because Micheli would go "Borchert" and throw for 600 yards during the game?

RC - Your question seems valid to me.  If one team has the best player at more than one position it seems unfair that the coach, AD, or SID has to make that decision.  Seems it could lead to some resentment and hard feelings between the players not nominated and the adults making the choices and players nominated.  The rule seems similar to something from rec. league soccer or tee ball.

Nope. Sure seems silly, though.

I the JCU grads would enjoy reading an article in foxsports on MSN discussing the possibility of the Detroit Lions hiring Scott Pioli as their GM, McDaniel's as their head coach, and signing Matt Cassel.  I thought Pioli was also a JCU grad....
