my take on the game.  mount is very good on offense and took advantage of what was given them.  the changes made at halftime to open up the run were excellent.  micheli is very good at reading the field and pulling the ball down and running when he needs too.  kmic is a joy to watch.  he never quits on a run.

defensively, they give up too many yards passing.  i am not sure what the total was but it could have been much more it wheaton hadnt had the drops in the first half.  they were able to get pressure on the qb in the second half when they needed it, but still could not cover very well down the field.

i was not impressed at all with ittersagen.  he did not make a play all game and failed to cover short on some key plays that allowed mount to keep drives moving.  he also was not impressive on kickoffs.  mount kicked it high and short, but he still took most of them up to about the 40, which mount seemed to be happy with since they didnt change the strategy.

WesleyDad,

I guess I see the glass as half full. The MUC defense played pretty well but they were against a qb who was pretty good and made some playes. They haven't given up passing yards like that all season and Wheaton did a pretty good job protecting Norris and he mades some plays against some great players. Nothing wrong with admitting when someone did a good job. I don't think its a sign of weakness for MUC.

Similarly, I think MUC kick off coverage did a great job covering kicks. The high kicks didn't really let ittersagen get going and they tackled well. The down side was an average start line past the 40 for Wheaton which any coach would take. I didn't think ittersagen played very well yesterday either as he missed several tackles which is very unlike him but in coverage I think you have to look at the fact that Shorts had 4 catches for 41 yds vs his average of almost 6 for over 110. Pete didn't get a ton of chances in M2M (he was soft on the shorts TD catch) since Wheaton played a 3 deep zone most of the time. He also ran Kmic down 2x from the backside and forced the fumble by Panchik on the last Mt possession that resulted in a touchback. Not his best game but Kehres did a good job of keeping him from being too much of a factor.

So I would credit Wheaton for making some plays in the passing game and MUC for covering kicks well and limiting chances for ittersagen to be a factor.

By the way, what's the story with the purple parrot on the motorscooter??

Being a little curious about how many media outlets were running articles on Kmic's record, I typed his name in a Google search.  I found on the first page an article from the Toledo Blade written in 2004.  I've linked it here.  It's pretty interesting to read it now knowing what he's done and how he's done it a MUC.

He ran for almost 1700 yards in less than 170 carries good for more than 10 YPC and scored the fifth highest total in OHSAA history for a single season.  It also mentioned that he did so while not playing in the second half of seven of his games in his senior season.

Sounds a lot like the blueprint for his years at MUC too.  Ironic.

RC,

That's great article to read even 4 years later.  It's eerily strange that he sounds exactly the same with the comments about "feeling that he let his team down" after a hard fought playoff loss and the stuff about his heart making up for his lack of size.

I sure hope MUC wins the Stagg on Saturday because it's going to be sad enough seeing Kmic and Micheli walk off the field for the last time wearing purple.  Even with a victory it's going to be an awfully bittersweet moment.

What a horrible weekend to lose my cable modem connection because some jerk was stealing cable in my neighborhood.  Didn't get a chance to watch the game or listen to it and had to settle for text message updates from Toph.  Got things back up and running now and looking forward to another weekend in Salem.  I'll throw out the invitation again, but I believe that Toph, myself, and our other brother (who doesn't post) will be in the parking lot at 7 a.m. if anyone would care to join us for the early (or late, depending on your Friday night) tailgate.
They should have practiced harder.

Pam Ward is just awful.  I wish there was a joke here, but there's not...

Here's an interesting stat from yesterday's game.  Wheaton came in with the nation's 22nd ranked rush defense at 90.38 yds/game.

Rushing         No.    Gain    Loss     Net    TD    Lg     Avg
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Nate Kmic       29      311      1        310    3     53     10.7
Greg Micheli     7        81       5         76     1     38     10.9
Scott Panchik   4       46       0         46     0     24     11.5

i just read the umhb folks take on their game and they were talking about how big and dominating uwww's lines were.  if that is the case, then mount may have trouble next week.  hscoach and skunkssidekick have both previously mentioned that they think mount will have trouble against big physical lines.  it should be another good game and will be fun to watch.

I remember when MTU took a HUGE O-Line to Salem and ended up getting punched in the mouth by St. Johns.

Hopefully we can take our smaller/quicker line this year and do the same to UWW.

The Johnnies are known for recruiting and fielding smaller but very quick, athletic players especially on defense.  Worked for them for years but against the Warhawks the last three meetings.................not so much.  ;)

Usee unfortunately we seem to be stuck with the purple chicken.   I believe this was the brain child of some professor? at MUC that thought a MUC aw would be appropriate.  A captain jack sparrow type mascot would in my opinion be more liking a raider.   I noticed a skull and crossbones flag in the stands yesterday.  How about a pirate ship in the south endzone like tampa bay has and we could shoot off a canon for every TD. Even the cheerleaders could dress in a pirate theme.   And coach LK could wear a patch over one eye.  NO I guess that won't happen.   On to virginia!

USee,

I was wondering the SAME THING.  (I know its been answered here already) Our booths were right next to eachother...so when that character wheeled itself in front of us in the 2nd half, I almost lost my train of thought (as I was speaking when I first saw it).

Very interesting.
