mtfan Thanks for a great weekend and got to see a very good football game between two great teams. It was good meeting a lot of oac posters in Salem VA.
and you to hscoach.

What is the chance that Cecil Shorts goes back to QB next year?  I know he showed his value as a receiver in the Stagg but it would be nice to have the ball in his hands on every snap.  I don't think Rocco is the answer.

IMHO...Cecil stays at WR and Rocco will get a chance. The one play I kept waiting for but never saw this year was Cecil passing from his WR position. But who knows what LK has in store for us.

I did forget one thing...

If any of you make dvd copies of the game, please be kind enough to PM me and we can work something out.

Thanks!

What he said^^

I couldn't make the game and only got to watch the fourth quarter, so I would love the chance to actually see it.

Thanks.

reality check,

re:  Rocco.

I didn't know Roger Bacon still had a football team that competes in the OHSAA.  They are worse than CJ!

(Outsider's perspective)

He's a big kid...had time to mature in the LK system.  I don't think you move Shorts back to QB... he's a GAMEBREAKER at WR in the Garcon mold.  Thats what I saw in the two games I saw him this year.  I think MUC needs that more than having him at QB... he'll make the QB better next year.  If I were a Mount fan, I'd trust they'll coach up Rocco and he can gain some confidence with the league games next season.  The only thing with Rocco seems to be the off-the-field stuff.  Hopefully he's learned the lesson and will keep his name on the Sports Page and not the Front Page.

Would he be the first QB to start for LK from Greater Cincinnati?

There's nothing "greater" about Cincinnati other than driving away from it (preferably towards Dayton and the pride of Dayton: Chaminade Julienne High School.   ;D

Watching my DVR'd Stagg Bowl again...

Mount's still winning this one too.

Just for the sake of argument (and we all love arguments):

The dual possession between Ely and the receiver in the endzone in the first half that went as incomplete could have been reviewed and you could make a case that Ely had the only possession in the endzone for an INT.

After watching the roughing the kicker play many times, I totally agree that the first UWW player is held and thrown into the punter.  I wonder however, if anyone took the time to notice the second UWW player that hit the punter's legs while he was coming down on top of the held UWW player.  Since the officials don't state a number, maybe one of the zebras was actually calling the second player for the penalty as his hit appeared to come when the punter could not defend himself.  I do agree though that the first player (the one the ESPN telecast focused on) was held and tossed like a rag doll.  Should have been called too.

The ESPN cameras were so focused on getting every player, coach, and trainer's face on camera between plays that the start of many plays were not on tv.

Bentley gets too concerned with when those balls hit guys' hands and doesn't pay attention to when the player actually "possesses" the passes.  You don't possess a ball the second it comes in contact with your hands.  You have to demonstrate some control of the ball.  Although I will agree with him and others (d3db) in that even with all this technology and replays galore, it's still ultimately a judgement call and maybe, just maybe, we'd be better off without the replay in the Stagg since DIII isn't about replays and stoppages for review anyways.  We're a simpler folk.

And unless the 9-man line was one of those where ESPN cut to it too late, I didn't see anything that resembled it.  There were a couple plays where UWW ran double tight with a wing and a split end to the same side (basically a double tight trey).  They would send the wing in motion across the formation so he became a lead blocker.  The only other thing I can think of is that UWW also ran some bunch trips with a TE opposite that brought all 11 players inside the box.

I watched the game live in the stands and then on replay a day later. The holding was blatant. Both ways too. On one play an O lineman stretched a jersey so high the defender looked like he was forced to rush on his tippy toes. No call! The only way to stop it is to make blockers wear gloves wth stays on the back of the hand where no grip can be made. The refs let a lot of holding go.

I know a football game is as much a coaching chess match as it is a physical contest. But sheesh....playing a loose zone and sitting on a lead sure makes the other team look better than it should. It reminds me of the Belichek era Browns...only LK CAN win a game using it.

That loose zone makes for many a first tackle miss also. The Raiders looked sloppy in their tackling. The Warhawks on the other hand tackled very well most of the game. You cant tell me the Raiders arent schooled in tackling better than that.

LK wins a trip to Hawaii for his part in the weekend for the Senior bowl or whatever its called. I would love to see Kmic and Micheli on TV one more time. Who do we pressure to get them invited? Somebody get me an Email address. Will anybody join me on the campain?

Thanks so much for the hospitality and great gameday breakfast. It was nice to meet kirasdad and Small but Slow at the gathering Friday evening, along with seeing the usual "hardcore" MUC football junkies. You know who you are.

I want to thank the hard working players, coaching staff and support people that made this another memorable year. I am so happy to have had the pleasure to see two fine young men lead their team back to the National Championship Game and bring home the walnut and bronze. It was very special to see the things they both accomplished on the field, all with the help they received from their teammates. Hats off to both Nate and Greg. I will miss seeing your magic on the field. JOB WELL DONE RAIDERS!!!
THANKS

Agree with most after watching the recorded version.

Both catches on the sidelines were judgement calls.  Hard to tell when the WR had possesion, vs. when his feet were in.

I thought the same thing on the roughing the kicker.  First one was held and thrown down, but second UWW player looked to come in also, on his own.

Agree with skunk on the defense.  Could have been way more agressive.  Small but Slow and I were trying to figure that one out all day Sunday on the ride home.  CBs played way too soft.  Was LK setting up UWW for next year?  Keep the game close also helps the "sport" by not having a blowout?  Trying to give them confidence?  Maybe he was letting the coordinators call the game since MTU had such a big lead?  Letting them get some BIG GAME Experience?  MTU is "KNOWN" for second half adjustments, and we really saw some vanilla O and D in the second half.  Only Coach K will ever know...

UWW defense really tightened things up after the first quarter.  Great tackling kept Kmic in check.

UWW offense really should have focused running the ball more earlier in the game.  Even down 21-7, there was LOTS of time to come back.  They kept trying to pass and kept themselves out of the game.  Should have kept feeding 33 and 24 until MTU stopped them.  When they finally did it in the 4th Quarter, it was too late.

My stupid DVR didn't record the last 5 minutes of the game.  I forgot to set it to record longer in case the game went long.  Stupid technololgy should be set to auto do that in this day and age.

Let's just sit back and enjoy this one, at least for a week or two, before talking about next year!  :)

Congrats to the Seniors, and all who had a hand in this!

Happy Holidays!

Welcome to the Machine

Does the North or East get credit for the win of  the 2008 Stagg Bowl? If the East gets credit, this is the first victory since 1991.

I believe since MUC played out of the East bracket the East gets the credit.

Mr. Ypsi

A question to rc, kirasdad, or whomever: I don't have a tape of the game so only saw the ESPN2 replays.  IF the roughing the kicker call was a case of the FIRST UWW player was held and thrown into the punter (which was clearly the case), but the SECOND UWW player was indeed at fault (I didn't see the second, so am going by your accounts), wouldn't the first supercede the second?

It is obviously a moot point, but I'm trying to learn (I am NOT a trained ref).  Should the proper call have been:

a. as called on the field

b. holding against MUC, (at UWW option) play stands or kick-over after penalty

c. negating penalties, replay the down

d. other?
