I found this on the internet:

Protocol for the National Anthem

It actually says that only those in uniform should keep their "headdress" on and salute.  All others should remove their "headdress" and hold it in their right hand over the heart.

Quote(1) when the flag is displayed–
(A) all present except those in uniform should stand at
attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart;
(B) men not in uniform should remove their headdress with
their right hand and hold the headdress at the left shoulder,
the hand being over the heart; and
(C) individuals in uniform should give the military salute
at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until
the last note; ...

Another reference to the "Purple Knights" of Mount Union.  :)

Warhawks set to return strong

QuoteMount Union has no trouble winning the league title—the Purple Knights have won the championship 17 straight years—and rarely have to go on the road for a playoff game.

Mr. Ypsi

I'm starting to grow fond of that "Purple Knights" name - have you guys considered changing?! ;D

[There's gotta be a Monty Python gag in there somewhere. ;)]

The flag protocol was recently changed to state that all veterans in or out of uniform (what uniform I'm unclear) should salute. I can only assume that as you don't remove your service hat, you could leave your civilian hat on if your saluting.

Although I still feel odd doing it, it was changed to recognize the veterans in a crowd, so I do (without a hat)

kirasdad and seventiesraider:

Thanks for the clarification of the protocol.  Much appreciated.

I believe the Veterans in uniform refers to members of the VFW, American Legion, DVA etc.  I know that when wearing my VFW hat it is considered in uniform.

The issue of "cover" and uniform constitution led to an interesting discussion post dinner last night, among my nephew (a newly, minted Eagle Scout), a veteran (bro-in-law), and my youngest brother (retired Major, USMA '79).

The Scouts, when in full uniform, are permitted salute upon both presentation of "The Colors" and "The National Anthem."  Brett and "the Pointer" came to consensus that veteran uniform consisted of either the uniforms American Legion, VFW, etc., and or official "cover" or campaign hat with civilian clothing.  Other covers were not deemed appropriate, they didn't believe - which means  ???

This begs to question, as a former band geek- are civilian/school bands in breach of protocol, pre-game, for non-doffing?  Won't even hazard opinion of units like the MOB @ Rice or the Stanford band.  ;)  Recollection, as the bugler for both the Legion and VFW during high school in the mid-60s, was that I wore NO cover during according of military honors - sometimes, a real pain during northern OH, January graveside services...

+k to the initiator of this discussion -though non-gridiron, it beat talking about geriatric cases of ulcerative coilitis or the latest hip replacement.   ;D

Still reflecting on the game...

This quote about McClain's interception from front page article says it all about the attitude of Mount players and how much they respected Whitewater as an opponent:

"I was just in the right place at the right time," McClain told D3football.com after the game. "The ball bounced our way. Unfortunately last year it bounced their way, but this year we got lucky."
"Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."  Confucius

A little more reflection on the game. Was else surprised LK didn't call a Time-Out right before the final kneel down to pull out Nate and Greg to give them a deserved Curtain Call? I was half-expecting half-hoping.

raiderpa

pulling players out for curtain calls is not part of the Mount Union philosophy under Larry Kehres.  He doesn't allow for any announcements of personal records or record breaking performances during games.  In fact, the attention brought to Nate Kmic during the Wheaton game was at the direction of the NCAA, not an LK production.

As an aside, I dont believe that Kmic or Micheli would not have wanted this type of  recognition anyway, as they have repeatedly stressed the team aspect of football and their appreciation and admiration of their teammates.

Raiderpa,
I think your right on with Micheli and Kmic not wanting the indivudal attention. As a past player I can honestly say we played against several teams that had more talent than we did. However everyone really bought into the fact that we could be good as individuals, but we really could be GREAT if we played as one. Because of that we beat those teams who had more talent. I think that is a big part of Coach K's success. Atleast during the five years I was there. And no I am not a docter or a lawyer, I took the long route with an education degree.  :)

Keep on trying bud.  You're getting close because process of elimination means you have to be.  There's only two (maybe three) more ways to try.

Thanks for the chuckle though.   ;D

Your welcome RC I'll get this right some time next year ;D

Hurf... I thought we got this figured out, buddy.

Hope everyone is having a great Holiday season.  The only $hitty thing about the Holidays means D3 football is over for the year.

On a side note:  Ohio has two teams in BCS games this year.  I'm trying to get to Miami next week for UC's coming out party.  Whodathunkit??

You attending a "coming out" party?  Yeah, whodathunkit...   ;D

Good luck with that.  I found out my mother works in a doctor's office with the grandmother of a current OSU football freshmen.  He was awarded a number of tickets for family for the Fiesta Bowl.  The grandmother joked with my mother about visiting her long lost nephew out here in AZ to save a hotel.  I told my mother to tell my new "auntie" that I'd love to have her as long as there were two tickets in it for me.  I've been calling my mom's office daily for the last week to remind my auntie that she's loved and I am looking forward to seeing her.  (I don't even know this woman but if I can land free OSU tickets as a result of all this, then it's well worth it.)  I'll let you know if my scheme works.

Congrats to Greg Micheli on winning the Gagliardi Award.  Looking forward to hearing his speech tomorrow evening at the award ceremony!!  What an honor as it is more than just about football!  Baking the brownies for both teams even as I write.  Actually the oven is baking them, but that's technical.  The meatballs are swimming in the hot tub for the Stone Station tailgate to which I hope those of you who are coming will stop by and swap stories.  I know the Skunks are coming, 70's and Kevin are due in as well.  Sorry to hear that Theaprof has family concerns.  But sure hope to meet others of you all this weekend.  I arrive sometime tomorrow, depending on when I hit the hay this am.  Safe travels!!!  It's STAGG Bowl time again and the ODAC is hosting.  I can't wait!!!!!

Yuck.  I just threw up my breakfast.

Had the mental picture of Olinemon in a hottub with meatballs.....

I think counseling is needed.  QUICK.

LMAO!!! LOL you know i kinda had the same impression when i read it too!  :-\
maybe she was feeling abit saucy!........hmmmm

Hey, guys--hscoach--in particular--as if the Quality Inn in Salem has hot tubs!!  I was using the Food network jargon for crock pot!!  At any rate, they were gone so fast that I didn't even get to have one, so what else is new!!  Congrats on the 10th national title!  I enjoyed the game!  I was very happy that it didn't  rain until about 4 pm.  We were still tailgating but everybody else had left for places north and west.  Now we have to wait another year for another good time.  I hope to hell we don't have to do another 11 am deal.  Doesn't anybody know Boomer or somebody at ESPN that can get us a better time?  Even 2 pm would be better!!!  There was no time to meet and greet!!I had a great time, though.  I would love to have a copy of the picture I was in with the purple suits.  And somebody else canme and got a picture with me as well.  If you read this, send me a PM and I'll send you my snail mail!!  As they say, see you next year!!  SAme place, same function!!
Brownies for Film Day--Now there's a Slogan I can live with!!!:)  Go EAGLES!
