Mount Union got some nice comments during the Champs Bowl (Wisconsin & Florida State).  Bob Griese selected Greg Micheli as his performer of the week and Holley Rowe picked L K as her choice.

Given all the NCAA poo-poo about mascots offensive to Native Americans, how do we still have Florida State Seminoles, probably one of the most stereotypical and offensive of them all or maybe it's just Bobby Bowden :D
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...

Griese picked Nate Kmic earlier in the year as his star performer.  He (Griese) seems to be on a roll this season.

Oddly enough the FSU Seminoles were the first of the NCAA institutions to be granted a waiver by the NCAA Senior Committee in the late summer of 2005.  Because of the unique circumstances, mainly the overwhelming support of Seminole tribal leadership, the NCAA granted the first of it's exceptions to FSU.

Praiderguy,

Have you heard something about a transfer going to Deleware recently. Another QB? He got one from OSU last year. I had heard about another one recently. Just wondering.
WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!

Penn State's Pat Devlin is transferring to Delaware.  There are at least 20 transferred student-athletes on KC's 2008 roster including at least 2 other QB's that transferred in (not counting Devlin).  Former OSU QB Robby Schoenhoft and former Akron QB Sean Hakes are already there.

If a team has a specific tribal name (like FSU) they can get an exemption if the tribe gives it's OK. As RC noted, the Seminoles gave overwhelming support  to FSU so they get to keep the name. Under the same rule the University of North Dakota has to change their name because the Sioux tribe essentially said "hell no". Don't know about any of the others, e.g. Central Michigan Chippewas.

I saw that too.

Very cool to see Mount Union get a little national love.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

That is the reason that the University of Illinois had to abandon their mascot, the Illini Chief, several years ago as the local tribes did not support him and fought against his portrayal.  The university was allowed to keep their name, Fighting Illini," however, because it is a derivative of the the name of the state.

Don't see CMU having to change their mascot name very soon - Mt Pleasant and CMU sit right on the Chippewa River, surrounded by the Isabella Chippewa reservation  ;)... and GOK how much money is acquired revenue at the casino from local collegians betting their book and tuition checks based on their (perceived) on-line poker acumen  ;D

Seemingly unrelated to DIII football.......

I played basketball this morning with Meadowlark Lemon.  I didn't realize it at first.  One of the guys I was playing with said, "You can guard Meadowlark Lemon over there."  I laughed at him and said, "You know just cuz he's an old black dude doesn't mean you have to call him some old black basketball player's name."  My buddy said, "I know.  That's ACTUALLY Meadowlark Lemon."

So after playing this morning I came home and did a Google search for Lemon's image.  I pulled up one that linked to D3football.com.  And when I clicked the details, I was linked to an article from 2007 about the Lemon boys at Linfield.  Turns out Meadowlark's son is a coach at Linfield along with a grandson Mychal who is in his first year as a coach after playing out his years for the Wildcats.  There are three more grandsons still on the Wildcats roster.  Last year, d3football.com did an article about the four grandsons playing on special teams together at the same time.  Pretty cool and random DIII connection.

Pierre had 3 catches for 21 yards today along with the only returned kick of the game for 22 yards and a solo tackle on special teams as the Colts beat up on the Titans.

His kick return actually went 52 yards to the 50, but was brought back on penalty.
Never underestimate the stimulation of eccentricity.

Jason Trusnik got a lot of playing time today against the Dolphins on defense and special teams. He ended up with 3 tackles, 2 assists and a fumble recovery.

The Florida Seminole tribe petitioned the NCAA a few years ago when the PC push forced several schools to change their mascots.  Their claim was that the Seminole branding by FSU presented a positive image of the tribe and that the tribe benefits from the affiliation with the mascot log and the university.  The Seminole gaming casinos located around the state probably benefit by the tie in with the FSU brand, as well, but I don't believe that was mentioned in their petition. I believe FSU and Utah are the only schools that were permitted to maintain their tribal mascots at that time.
