I could not see UWW rated #1 in pre-season or after because they are not the national champs! Mount deserved that #1 ranking despite losing a few great players. Very simple, really! Until Mount loses a game...

In D3 you don't receive a trophy for leading the polls (that's just in BCS).
I'd rather be ranked lower (but still conference champs, of course) and underestimated in the playoffs.  Leave believing in polls to BCS followers.
Being No. 1 when time expires in 4th qtr of this year's Stagg Bowl is when I'd most like Mount Union to be No 1.  8)

runyr,

I could not agree more and thankfully we have a system in place that works. My point is this...I do not like polls at all...it's more of a popularity contest. But when you switch votes because a team won by only 7 points it's just something I could never understand. Every ranked team, more than likely, will have a close game during the season, why take votes away?

Mount played a determined team but Mount showed their determination and will to win in the 4th quarter. So after all that you lose votes? Sorry, don't see that at all!

purpled,

IMO, there is no reason to dislike polls unless you take them too seriously. The D3 Football poll is interesting and makes for some good conversation as the season progresses. I like them for that reason.

Regarding "switching votes", that depends on the philosophy of the voter. Some agree with you and feel that the previous years' National Champs should remain number 1 until they are defeated. There's nothing wrong with that thinking. Others feel they should vote, initially, on who  they feel is the best team in the country at the start of the year and not change the vote unless there is a loss involved. Nothing wrong with that thinking either. And others give their first place vote week to week based on who they believe is the best team in the country. There's nothing wrong with that thinking either.

Obviously, if everyone used the first philosophy of voting. Mt. Union would secure all 25 first place votes every week unless they were to lose. Who knows what the vote would be if the second philosophy were prevalent among all 25 voters. My guess is that if all 25 voters used the third philosophy, UWW would be #1 in the country right now.

The good thing is that none of it affects the playoffs. But it is fun conversation until they start.

You can watch a lot of other sports already.

Wouldn't it have made sense to do Football first?

Once again coming to Lenny's rescue, some sports, like volleyball you can just set up a camera and go. Admitedly, if you televise, I'd like to up the quality from Cap's rather tedious video. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate  any video that any DIII school can get online, but we have production agreements in place for our home games and I'm not ready to suggest that Joe Tait become the voice of shakey webcam streaming video.

I just looked into my closet and tried to imagine an orange and black sweatshirt in there with all that Green/White and Purple/White/Black. Gag

As a Heidelberg grad I can tell you that purple and white are also important on the Tiffin campus--the "fraternal organization" of which I was a member (THE HEIDS or Nu Sigma Alpha or The Heidelberg Men's Literary Society--somebody gave lots of $$$ to da' 'Berg to make sure national fraternities and sororities never were allowed on campus) use the colors Purple and Grey--close enough to white for me!  If anyone questions your wearing of the Purple and White--just tell them that Dratsab sent you!  Wear your purple proudly--it will be OK!

BTW--my wife, who is watching over my shoulder, says Hi! to all my imaginary friends--you guys have gone from internet friends to imaginary friends--next month you won't exist at all!! ;D ;D

Jeesh--I took her to a game once and she read a book--and that was before we were blowing everybody out by half time!

that "douche bag" had 2* TD's after a week with the new offense...i dont see it as an effort thing, but rather playing for an actual NFL team again.  if i was a browns player i would be punching anyone in LBJ's crew in the hopes to get out of town.

and no offense to Pat and the D3 crew, but who really cares about the D3 poll...we're lucky enough to have a playoff to settle things

No, I think that proves even more how much of an effort (and mental) thing it was for him.  Did you ever watch him run his routes here?  He was completely lazy, jogging when he wasn't the primary receiver, not fighting to cut across the corner on slant routes, etc.  And of course that's not to mention the drops.  The guy is a TO, Brandon Marshall, Chad Javon Ochocinco.  A talent on the field, but only when he feels like it, and a detriment in the locker room (and off the field otherwise as well).  I'm glad we got rid of him.  We'll be better off in the long run with a receiver who will put forth more effort, catch a higher percentage of the balls thrown to him, and run block.

For 90% of the voters that do nothing but look at the school name and the final scores, it's my guess that the only reason they're still voting MUC at #1 is because history says that MUC will be there in end.

You must be thinking of the other poll, HScoach, because our voters don't do that. I think the fact that four voters in two weeks have changed their No. 1 vote despite nobody having lost really destroys your assertion.

It's the coaches' poll that has 2.5% of the No. 1 votes for UW-Whitewater. Ours has just about 10 times that many.

Wrong.  The AFCA is worse but I was talking about your's.

Assuming Mount will be Mount again is in my mind the only reason they started ahead of Whitewater in the first place.  If you look at the numbers, who returns and who was lost, Whitewater should have been #1 to start the season.

My point about the voters looking at the name was trying to say that it's the only reason Mount is STILL ranked #1.  I'm not disagreeing with those that have recently switched to Whitewater.  I'm disagreeing with those that started with Mount and continue to remain there because of the name recognition and history.  Not the present depth chart, outcomes, stats, etc.....
