Hard to remember, but in the sixties Mount scheduled Hiram for Homecoming more often than not. The Purple Raiders of that day weren't much better and we hoped to beat someone for the Homecoming crowd. (It wasn't always successful)

BTW I've had a couple of friends spend a year or two at Hiram along the career path. They both moved up to high school coaching

Hiram beat Mount Union twice in 60s:

1961   21-20
1963   23-8  (Mount Union finished 1-8 in '63 with only victory: COW 10-7)

Mount Union then ran off 24 straight wins over Hiram ending with their last meeting in 1999 (59-0).

Only one school has played more football games with Mount Union than Hiram (COW).

Hiram's biggest margin of victory over Mount was their first ever game together in 1894.  24-0 Hiram.  (Ouch!)

runyr,

Hiram used to get some news when they provided the training for the Cleveland Browns and the campus received many visitors before the Browns open their own facility in Berea. Other than a second tier football team, I have not heard much about the school, how are they in other sports. :-\

Think Hiram President Chema would be happier with a Men's synchronized swimming team than a football team.

And Heidelberg is a second tier football team, Hiram should be described in "tears"

Hiram appealed to Paul Brown because it was a dry town

Other sports?  Are there other sports?   ;D
Heck, I don't know.  Ric doesn't have other sports on mtunionfootball.com and that's my only source.  ;)

I don't know if this has been discussed, but I just saw that Rocco's been named one of the quarterbacks for the North team in the first ohiofootball.com Senior Bowl to be held at Upper Arlington in April.   It's interesting that the rosters include players from teams in all divisions.  The North roster has OAC players plus players from Youngstown and Ashland.  The South team seems to have more upper division (Ohio State, Cincinnati, Miami) players, but I think they're still filling out the rosters.  Mixing players from different divisions could make the game interesting and it only costs $10.00.   This is the first time I've heard of any state having a college Senior Bowl.

Any recruiting updates for top HS Players for the Raiders and the OAC and what teams bring  the strongest line-ups back for 2010?

Jason Candle was named MAC recruiter of the year by rivals.com.  Here's a link to the entire list.

JASON CANDLE, TOLEDO
Candle has been successful everywhere he has been, including playing a role in five national championships at Mount Union as a player and a coach. So it's no surprise to see him quickly develop into one of the MAC's top recruiters in just one year at Toledo. He helped recruit seven prospects for the Rockets, including four-star James Green - a one-time Minnesota commitment. Candle also landed four-three star recruits. He has strong ties in Ohio, and that has paid off well. But he was also to go to Florida and land four really talented prospects.

Some of you guys are brutal! ;D  Just some "random" thoughts I have regarding this.  While, indeed, Hiram has not had a very good football program for a long time, still, the very fact that it offers one is good.  I go back to points I've often put forth in similar discussions.  Hiram is similar to our Olivet - if you review Olivet's longtime history, the football program has not done that well in regards to the W-L columns.  However, the opportunities that program offers to its student-athletes (and all the other philosophical attributes that mark a football or any sports program) as well as what it shares with the student body are worthy, along with its longstanding historical tradition of the sport at that school since 1884.  Certainlly, Olivet is never going to be a powerhouse (the same can be said for Northwestern as for years -actually decades - people called for them to be kicked out of the Big Ten, yet they are indeed competitive now and not to be taken lightly by any team there), yet at Olivet, its administration have made the commitment to the program and they have improved overall during the last decade or so (with the exception of the last two years, 3 years ago they won the MIAA and made the NCAA playoffs - although a new coaching staff is in place for this year).

As far as coaching positions at Hiram, for someone to go there all depends on what their longterm goals and aspirations are.  Someone who is not looking for a "steppingstone" stop, can indeed make a positive contribution to such a program and especially for the football players there in many ways.  And while the school will most likely never be a team that might challenge for the league title on a routine basis, it is not impossible to have it improve.  Obviously, that won't happen overnight and make take years to even make some strides, but, again, that happened at Olviet over the last 30+ years and is not impossible anywhere.  Besides, for some young(er) coach to go to Hiram - even if they have plans to "move on" in the future - it is certainly legit that "you have to start somewhere' as that old saying goes and...one can't discount the experience the coach would get during his time there.

There might be a candidate with an Olivet connection in the mix at Capital.  At least there should be an applicant.

e_lee,

Let us know on more info on that Olivet-Capital link when it comes available. I am trying to keep in touch with the MIAA boards, since we lived in Michigan for awhile and am an alum of CMU and Mount. Thanks!!! :)

Back from Vegas... What a trip.

Even learned a little.

Willamette HC Mark Speckman is a funny guy to listen to.  At one point showing film he said, "If that guy was a better athlete, he'd score here.  But he can kick your @ss in calculus."

I don't want to give the wrong impression though.  Football was definitely not a top priority in Sin City.  We've got some stories.   ;D
