Back from Vegas... What a trip.

Even learned a little.

Willamette HC Mark Speckman is a funny guy to listen to.  At one point showing film he said, "If that guy was a better athlete, he'd score here.  But he can kick your @ss in calculus."

I don't want to give the wrong impression though.  Football was definitely not a top priority in Sin City.  We've got some stories.   ;D

Those stories SHOULD stay in Vegas... except for a PM to Andy Feltersnatch's inbox on here... where they'll be read and then promptly deleted.   Been to Vegas over 50 times because of a job that I used to have working with Police Departments (Las Vegas Metro was a big customer).. as a result of that, some of those peace officers were able to show SF as a younger guy, where to go "off the strip" for arts and recreation.

Candidates at Capital for first round of interviews-

Henry Stanford, OC at Capital
Chris Ochs, OL Coach U of Dayton - Capital Alum
Mark Henniger, HC at NC Wesleyan - Wittenberg Alum
Bob Jacoby, HC at Hamilton Township and former DeSales HC - Otterbein Alum
Former HC from Iowa Wesleyan- don't know the name

Toph

Folks-

A bit of shameless promotion for the people who sign my checks.

I know this is really a UAA topic, but I figured I'd post it here because it is of local and D3 interest.  Dan Whalen is scheduled to appear on the Really Big Show with Tony Rizzo on ESPN 850 WKNR today, don't know the exact time.  Whalen is crashing the combine and is scheduled to update Rizz all next week from the combine.

If you're not in Northeast Ohio you can tune in at www.espncleveland.com.

That's my shameless plug.

Henninger has done some winning, I think, at NC Wesleyan... weren't they the team who as an 8 seed beat W&J a few years back?

Yep, he's the one.  And the last Witt alum we hired worked out pretty well.

The former IWC coach is Jason Smelser, who owned a 5-21 record at that NAIA school in 3 years as Head coach

Henninger because he's already been a winning HC, then Stanford because he's already there and knows the kids (and he ran a darn good offense this past season), then Ochs because he is an Alum.

Jacoby seems to really want out of Hamilton Twp pretty bad.....

Chris Wells was LB and Coach at Thomas More.  He was the interim HC for a game at HHS this past year.
Joel Lauer was an assistant coach at Mount St Joe in 2009, after resigning as Madison HS head coach following the 2008 season.

I played with and was coached by Wells and was coached by Lauer as a freshman in HS... I think either would be good, but I'm really rooting for Chris.

JK:

Thanks for the updates.  Henninger has obviously done extremely well in his two seasons at NC Wes.  However, as he has been there only a short time, don't you think those folks would not think too kindly of his seeking this other job?  On the other hand, apparently they have given him permission to interview/pursue it.

d3db,

Not that I speak from experience, but here is my theory...

It seems that schools are much more accepting of their coaches interviewing for jobs closer to "home."  Henninger is from Indiana (if I remember correctly) and a Witt alum.  So, he wants to be back closer to family.  I think everyone understands that desire, and I think administrators understand what coaches sacrifice to advance their careers, so they give them some leeway when an opportunity opens up that would let a guy (or gal) "go home."

FWIW.

Jacoby left Desales in order to get into the public school system and make a little money.  Can't blame him for applying....Hamilton Township is a good place to be from.

I also heard that Travis Everhardt who is a former alum applied and never heard anything. That's a shame on the school if so. Even if you don't want to hire the guy, at least give him the common courtesy to say you're not interested.

From the candidates that I see so far, I would have to go with Henry Stanford. He is already in the program. He knows how the school operates....which may not be a good thing from what I hear, and he had an extremely good offense this year. Having a different offense with Assman coming back would not be good. I know for a fact that Stanford and Coach White have been recruiting kids still for the school. These kids just want to win and it's a shame the administration won't give them the tools to do so. Eventually they will realize that women's basketball and the conservatory of music isn't the money maker. I won't even open up the mail they give me until they start making some changes up there.

I hope Cap can hire an alum, maybe it make make the difference with the athletic program and the administration.
