I hate to tell you this guys,  but you should really start thinking in terms of six years of higher education more often than not. A graduate degree...MBA, JD, MA  etc is becoming the new BA.  On that happy note let me also say the kids do have a way of making it happen when they are doing it and it is a wonderful thing to see. I have seen expert opinion saying go ahead and take out the student loans in their names .  It is better, they say, to let them incur the debt rather than deplete your hard won assets.  The point is you may not be able to replace that money while your kid(s) have their earning futures ahead of them.  

Purple, I understand where you are coming from but. I guess I'm old school. I feel I should give my children as much as I can to make their life better in the long run.    
As far as my family history goes, I figure I have only 5 or 6 years left to enjoy my children. I really don't want them burdened with loans when they "strike out on their own." I think every parent wants their kids to have it better than they had.

Our goal was to hope that our children earn their degrees and not have them owe any student loans coming as the result of Bowling Green, Mount Union and Pepperdine. We did it and would do it again in a heartbeat and that is one of our greatest feelings. We will just now enjoy our grandchildren and find a smaller home if we can ever sell this large one!

Runs from Ludington, MI to Manitowoc, WI.  It's called the S.S. Badger.  They've got a website that could tell you all you need to know - go to www.ssbadger.com.
