Anyone have any thoughts as to what we might see that we haven't in the last 17-18 years during the playoffs? An all string marching band? A choir/cheerleading squad?

Someone else's stadium? :) Pretty much covers your time frame.

Just checking the National Rankings updated after 1st Round Playoff Games.

UMU Defense is now rated:

11.  Rushing Defense  74.09 ypg   (#1 UWW 42.18 ypg)
  1.  Pass Efficiency Defense  77.64 ypg
  1.  Total Defense  191.00 ypg
  1.  Scoring Defense  7.18 ppg

True!
The D numbers sure get helped out by playing a team in Week 11 that came into the game as the 206th rated offense out of 236 teams who then losses their starting QB early in the 1st quarter..........

Looks like we have another enrollment in the HSCoach Quoting class.  I thought for sure you already graduated from this program Kirasdad!

RC, that quoting class is obviously not working.  Maybe a new proctor is needed?

HScoach,

I know you are the expert here, but are you ever going to give this year's  Raider team any credit at all? St. Lawrence's starting QB was not lighting it up in the prior 10 games, so why would it made much difference! :-\

OK.  Scratch the "losses their starting QB" part and it still stands.  Shutting down SLU doesn't garner any praise from me.  Their offense would have been the worst in the OAC by quite a large margin.  Their defense was an average one (Etta?).  Sorry that I can't get all pumped up about beating Muskingum in the playoffs by 49-0.

And honestly, it's not the score I'm worried about.  It's about playing with intensity and executing to their fullest capabilities.  Whether that's a Stagg Bowl win or a loss this week.

HScoach is my boy... I love how pragmatic he is about UMU... I'm sure Mount will be tested at some point of these playoffs and it will be fun to see this with them wearing white before the Stagg Bowl.  I wouldn't bet against Kehres though.

USee,
If I knew how to give Karma points I would.  "a lucid, intelligent, well thought-out objection,"  :)

Formational techno jargon aside, let me give a for instance of what I meant by power formation and plays.  Although I don't see the "I" formation much from anyone, UWW will run more of a straight off tackle play- without fakes to a motion man and without reads for an option- and they run plenty of plays under center.  This is what I see as today's version of a power formation and play.  I've seen Mt a few times as well, and although they are more shotgun, I still see them as a more physical style than NCC.  I have not seen ONU personally, but I would imagine they've had to power up to face Mt.

In what I saw of NCC (limited I admit), I see them as an Oregon-type offense.   A lot of shotgun with a lot of the read option and QB runs (which is another element I don't associate with power) .  To me, once you add the element of option, the play changes from pure power to one of finesse.

disagree wholeheartedly...  just look at Oklahoma and Nebraska from the 1980s.. you can be a power team and run the option.  Its all in the attitude.

That strikes closer to what I think "physical" means.  To me it's pounding the guy across from you on every play untill he's worn down and his desire begins flag. It means receivers blocking down field on every running play. It means hitting receivers untill they think more about the hits than catching the ball.  It means nailing the running backs untill they hesitate to hit the hole.  You can do that in any formation.

As a Nebraska HS graduate and lifetime Cornhuskers fan, I gotta disagree as well. Old Big Eight Conference football was fast paced and exciting, unlike the Woody Hayes football of the same years. Do have to admit that the last second pitchouts always found me holding my breath. Give me Turner Gill and a wide open Nebraska offense over any controlled, grind it out one

So you don't like "three yards and a cloud of dust"?! ;D

While I admit to missing the days when Michigan/OSU was almost always a battle of top 10 (often top 5) teams, I DO like the more open football of today.  Michigan has one of the most exciting offenses in the country; if only they didn't have one of the worst defenses in the country! :P

[Michigan's 67-65 3OT win over Illinois outscored the last 3 basketball meetings of the teams!]

One of my former students emailed me and said only slightly tongue in cheek, "Muskingum has a better defense than Michigan"
