Guess Cortland State hadn't gotten the memo of the name change and included the old name in its news release. That's why we always drop college or university unless it's absolutely necessary to differentiate two schools.

Spreads for Round 3 have been posted.

No offense to my friends in the CCIW, but Whitewater is a comfortable favorite.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

no disrespect to Alfred, that freshman rb seems like a NY version of Kmic, but I think the bigger game for Mount fans this coming week is Bethel vs St Thomas.  Here's hoping Bethel gets some revenge for earlier this season

Actually in his freshman playoff series Kmic had that kind of total yards in 4 games, not 11. I think Dwyer's numbers are rather Colton Coy'ish

Yep, good to see you too, HSCoach.  Seventies, I saw you from a distance but I was too warm to come outside.  Wussy. :)

Gordon,

I was in the TV booth next door with Harry Paidis and Coach Deseker, wish I had introducded myself. It was quite nice inside wasn't it? ;D
WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!

Ah, I thought that looked like you.  But didn't think you were old enough to be hanging out in the geriatric boarding room.

Not surprisingly, this isn't as accurate as you'd like it to be.

Kmic did indeed have an incredible playoff run. He had 174 carries in 5 playoff games for 1040 yards and 12 TDs and 6.1 yards per carry.

The kid from Alfred is sitting on 217 attempts for 1390 yards and 8 TDs and 6.4 yards per carry.

Alfred's back appears to be a quite a talent no matter how much you'd like to degrade his efforts.  Give a little credit where credit is due.

You instead compare him to a guy who did have a nice career with the Cards but had  239 carries for 1102 yards, 4.6 yards per carry and 12 TDs.  Dwyer looks a lot closer to Freshman Kmic than Senior Colton Coy at this point.

RC-The point being that it was an apples and oranges comparison with Kmic only seeing limited action before the last two games of his freshman season.

Perhaps better to compare him to a Soph named Murray with 1403 yards on 250 carries at 5.6 ypg with 19 tds  in 11 games.

Coach Deseker? (Or De-sucker to those of us who knew and "loved" him) There's a name I never thought I'd hear again

By the way, I'm still po'ed at that guy. When I came back to Mount after the service, he let me enter the intramural track meet, work out for a couple weeks and high jump 6' 3", breaking the intramural record, AND THEN he disqualified me because I lettered in track four years before that. I sweated out a couple hundred bucks worth of German beer getting in shape for that :P Told me he just wanted to know if I could still do it. grrrrr

Just for this week, I may be the biggest Bethel fan in Ohio

Alfred's QB hails from Bemus Point NY, what Mount Union standout was from Bemus Point

Oh, Google Magic Ball ... please tell me ... Josh Liddell.  And Jake Larson is on the team now.
Never underestimate the stimulation of eccentricity.

As someone who called the game for the video broadcast yesterday, I can tell you why Dwyer is an impressive back beyond what his numbers show.  He has intangibles that you don't normally see in tailbacks until they are juniors or seniors.  Specifically, he has patience enough to wait for his offensive line to open his holes.  Lots of guys have raw speed and power, but that's not going to get the job done if the holes are not there up the middle or around the A- and B-gaps.  You hit those zones prematurely, and you'll have no gain normally.  Dwyer has adapted to his line well enough to be able to stutter-step his way toward the line and anticipate/exploit the eventual hole -- with a lot of speed and power on the resumption of his movement forward.

I know this can lead to backside penetration, but Cortland safeties that came in on blitzes from the corners would often miss Dwyer by about a half-second upon his resumption because he had jets enough to outrun them going up the middle.  His touchdown total would have been much higher yesterday if Alfred didn't opt to place their linebacker (Nick Clark) at the tail of the full-house backfield in short-yardage situations.

My best advice to Alfred, though, is to remove Dwyer from special teams receiving -- he takes a licking in those situations, and it's just asking to have their key to a run-pass balance knocked out of a game.  I know 52-man rosters make this tough, but there must be other, smarter options for these plays on the roster.

Long story short, Dwyer really impressed me yesterday -- and after 16 seasons of announcing, that's saying a lot coming from me.  It doesn't mean Mount Union can't stop him -- just assessing what the stat sheet doesn't show necessarily.
