So..DRT..give me an example of a player who started over another because he went to  "the right high school." I assume you are saying Piloto would have been the starter if he was from a local school.  I had to laugh at your comment the school gives "carte blanch"  to the football program to recruit and fund the large roster of players!  Students at Mount are funded by dear old mom and dad,and their student loans. From what I saw,I can't see Neal making it back for the Stagg Bowl.  Nothing against Neal, who has had a fine sophomore season, but Piloto gives Mount's offense big play ability not there with Neal.

So you're saying that nobody gets academic scholarships at Mount?  Mount doesn't have a trust and president's scholarships, etc? Everybody's mom and dad pays the full load and they accumulate huge student loan debt by graduation.

That would make Mount the only private doing that.

Anyone notice the guy in the daily dose blog dissing on MUC because they have gotten all home games in the playoffs.  I think I figured out why he is such a hater of good old MUC.  he is a fan of Widener and can't seem to get rid of the taste of that 70 MUC scored on them.

drt-Unless you attend everyone of the hundreds of hours of practice, film sessions, lifting,  one on ones with coaches, and are privie to grades and behavior issues, it's all just opinion.

Granted I have been impressed with Piloto since I first watched him, but I've never spoken to him or Neil and know little or nothing about all those other issues.

This may come as a great shock, but young athletes and their parents often will tell you some "amazing" things, which at the end of the day are just talk.

Gotta say there was another Mount moment yesterday, like Kmic for Robinson, Micheli for Jorris and now Piloto for Seaman. From "oh my God" one moment, to "OH MY GOD" a few moments later

Just saw a post over on the WIAC board that lists Vince Kehres as a finalist for the River Falls position.  With any luck they'll want to wrap up their search and make a hire this week.  I can't see Larry--or Vince for that matter--allowing for the interview this week which would help to keep him here.

I followed the link to the UWRF website and Kehres will be interviewed in an open forum next Monday (after the Stagg) with a UWW assistant interviewed the following day.  They're 2 of 5 candidates for the position.  Here's the link:

hey guys, figured i would give you my impression of uww after watching yesterdays game.  they have a real strong front 4 and linebacker group on d.  you can throw the ball on them and if you get protection will make it easier.  their offense is nothing fancy.  run coppage and stanley and throw the ball a little.  i did not see any big play receiver like shorts so i figure they will do like they did yesterday control the ball and move the chains.  a nice offensive line and brekke gets the job done again nothing flashy.  wesley had some good kick returns out near mid field.  it didnt look like they worry about giving up yards on d, just keep coming at you figuring you will make a mistake before you get to the end zone.  they are very good as you would expect.  i think it will be a good low scoring, in the teens low 20's game.  both teams d's seem like they are playing top notch at this time.  i think the x factor is cecil, if mount gets him the ball is space which there was some yesterday, he could have a big game.  see you guys in salem.

Purple--I know how college is paid for, and it isn't just student loans and checks from Mom and Dad.  If a school wants a player badly enough, they make sure the family can afford to send the kid there.
A school enables a huge roster in more ways than financial aid.  Think infrastructure, equipment, staffing, etc.
And I was not putting down any player, talent-wise.  But with 200 kids on the field, even the best coaches and film-watchers can't see everything.
Nate Kmic will be the first to tell you that he "got lucky," when he got his chance to run behind the first team O-line as a freshman.
Yesterday, Seaman's misfortune may have turned into Piloto's lucky break.

I sure am glad St. Thomas didn't win last week.  The NY Giants got stranded in Kansas City trying to get to Minneapolis and then the game gets delayed by a day anyways.  Mount Union wouldn't have been leaving until sometime Sunday night probably.

I don't know when or where that game could have been played here this week.

If Piloto is "pitching", Jasper Collins may be the x-factor. I was very, very impressed with his game yesterday.

Anybody know what happened to Ryder, if anything. He was part of a two back set with Murray till Seaman went down and then wasn't part of the shotgun set that Piloto was in.

The emergence of Piloto may be "sudden," but it was not unexpected by people who have seen him play in game situations.
Not to take anything away from LK's sublime coaching, it just illustrates the depth of Mount, which is the result of a school who gives carte blanche to a program to recruit and fund the number of players they keep on their roster (and keep off their competition's rosters.)
I saw a Mount JV team play at BW this fall that could have given 80% of the D3 teams in Ohio, or anywhere else for that matter, a really hard time.
Many of those kids have since quit football completely, or have transferred, minus 2 years of eligibility, out of frustration over lack of playing time or not being given the opportunity they have been promised.
Based on what I have seen, and based on conversations with kids in the program, virtually any position, with a few notable exceptions,  has 2-3 kids who are equal in ability, and could produce similar results to what are put up on the field on Saturdays.
They might just not have come from the right high school.......

drt:  Welcome to competitive college athletics.  Doesn't matter where you're at.  Mount, Northern, or Marietta.

You might get a chance to show your stuff early in your career.  Or it might be late.  Some might never truly get a chance on the varsity field to show it in front of Mom and Dad, but EVERY single kid had multiple chances to make the good impression that leads to an opportunity.    Unfortunately, many kids don't recognize the little things that make the impression.  And often the opportunity comes at the expense of an injury or illness to someone in front of them on the depth chart.   Sometimes an opportunity comes and we either don't recognize it or fail to fully take advantage it it.   And most often the kid just isn't good enough.  Which very few of the kids are honest enough with themselves to admit.

Welcome to life.   Life isn't fair and unlike community club soccer, not everyone gets a trophy.

From Mount down thru Capital to lowly Muskingum, the complaints are the same.  Only difference is the talent level of the kid doing the complaining.  There are guys on Mount's team could start from day one at almost any OAC school, just like there are guys not seeing the field at Capital that could start easily at Wilmington.  If your son wanted to simply play college ball and not have to compete against the best that D3 has to offer, then he should have went somewhere else.  I'm sure Hiram or Oberlin would love to have him.  Wouldn't be the first time a back-up got sick of waiting and left.

And LK doesn't promise playing time to anyone.  Only promise made is an opportunity to compete for a job.   And if you think you heard the promise made, you were hearing what you wanted to hear, not what was said.

The most accurate thing about your post was the comment about 2 or 3 kids being very equal to the starter.  Duh.  Other than LK himself, that's the biggest key to Mount sustaining their great success.  They have great depth that has bought into the system and is ready to go at a moments notice.  That is exactly what separates Mount from 90% of D3.  Their quality depth.  A lot of teams bring in 100 freshmen a year, but lack the quality that Mount gets.    Capital has had some really good teams, but one injury at a key position and they were screwed.  Mount can sustain losing their best player (Shorts) and survive.  They can lose their QB (Rocco last year and Seaman yesterday) and survive.  Most good D3 teams don't win with their back-up QB throwing for 300+ yards.

But Mount isn't just a regular D3 program.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

Seventies,

Saw Ryder on the sidelines and he appeared to be fine. I think Coach Kehres was just using the 3 WR set with Collins. Could see alot of that next week in certain situations. Agree with purple, Piloto will get most of the snaps next week, IMHO.

Not sure whether the college enables a large football roster, OR encourages football to increase enrollment and income. Depends on who you talk to.

BTW-before the question asked-MTU IS the home team and will be in the west/home/big stands.

Congratulations to Piloto for being ready. Anybody who saw a JV game had little doubt
