Looks like Matt Campbell is Toledo's guy.  Will be the youngest head coach in the FBS.  Good start to Stagg Bowl week for the Raiders

I don't know, from reading the posts from most of the Mount faithful I might as well finish up my Christmas shopping this weekend and forgo the trip to Virginia. After all, we have NO shot right?

Really?

Come on.

First off, OK Whitewater should be favored to win. They are the two-time defending champions, have beaten us twice in a row and are unbeaten this year.

They have been the best team in D3 the last two years!

They have the best running back and if not they best quarterback, certainly one of the best. The thing that makes Blanchard so good in this offense is he is not asked to win the game, just not lose it. And by completing 69% of his passes and having only thrown three interceptions all year, he is doing just that.

And that's the big difference between last week and this week. McSweeny had to win the game for Wesley (and he darn near did) and Blanchard does not have to do that.

But what does Whitewater not have?

How about Ustruck, Weber or Gawronski. Three First-Team All-WIAC graduates from last year's offensive line. Or Rusch and Brandes, two All-Conference receivers that killed us for three years. (Especially Rusch).

And that's just on offense. Gone on defense are Baldwin, Hicks, Hibner, Ford, Olson and McCulloch, all First-Team All-WIAC defenders.

What remains?  Three defensive starters from last years Stagg Bowl.  THREE!  Bet you didn't know that! And on offense? One returning starter on the offensive line (Allemand), and Coppage. That's it. OK Blanchard is an upgrade at QB, and Tamsett at FB is back with zero carries on the year so he must just block the hell out of everybody.

They've reloaded, sure. But we weren't that far behind.

Whitewater is not extremely bigger than Mount Union. A little maybe, but not much. Not like past years. The roster might not be accurate, I don't know. Maybe we're in for a surprise. And there's nothing there about speed. But we know how fast the Raiders are too.

Mount Union's inconsistent offense (according to this board) averages three more points a game than Whitwater, and two and half more first downs per game. The Raiders are picking up 10 more rushing yards a game, six more through the air, 16 more a game overall. This with all the injuries!

The defense is allowing 18 less rushing yards, 33 less passing yards, 51 less total yards per game.

Whitewater has converted 49% of their third downs (which is insane) to Mount Union's 43%. So certainly getting Whitewater off the field is a huge key. We know that from the first half two years ago.

Yeah, throw all that out because of different competition. OK how do we measure that? I believe I read somewhere that Mount Union's SOS was very similar but a bit better than Whitewater's?  Maybe I have that wrong, I don't know.

Mount Union 41, Oshkosh 17 on 9/10.  Whitewater 20, Oshkosh 17 six weeks later. And that was with Nate Wara at less than 100% against the Warhawks. And Oshkosh had a game under their belt when they played us. What does that mean? Nothing come kickoff.

This post is not to stir the pot for our friends from Wisconsin. Please don't respond. I know how good you guys are, you don't need to tell me. This is for our fans that don't know what to think when we go 14-0 but win a few games by less than 20 points. (How sad for you). Have you watched the BROWNS lately???

In Whitewater's three wins in this series they scored better than 30 points. In their three losses they did not. 30 points will be too many this year, that cannot happen. Four times this year they didn't so it can be done.

Whitewater has the edge, absolutely. But its not as great as most think. The team that plays better will win. It will not take a Herculean effort to beat Whitewater. We just need to take along our sling-shot!

Crap we played a QB getting his first career start in the Stagg last year and one coming off injury the week before the year before and were still in those games in the final five minutes.

Whitewater should be the favorite. They've won 44 straight games and we know how good you have to be to do that. We've done it twice!

But you gotta lose sometime.

OK, I've hit my quota for words typed. Safe travels all!

(Oh, plus karma to Kehresma because it seems he (or she sorry don't know) is the only one that gives us a shot!)

What tha.....wha.........wh........w.............IT'S RIC "WILD THING" BRIENZA!!!!!

The last time Ric posted like this was in 2005 when most on here (other than Mount fans) said the Stagg Bowl was played in Linfield, and those two teams were by far the best two in D-III.  Ric calmly (well maybe not so calmly back then) predicted Mount would win.  It's like a sighting of a football jesus on a water tower in Alliance......IT'S A SIGN!   ;D 8-)

How do you defense WW? Do you gear up to stop LC like WW did with Nate in '08...we all know how that worked out for WW. I don't know anything about their receivers...what should we expect there?

On the bright side, since Mount will be wearing all white (that's what I was told today) they can just send an underclassman out to midfield to flop around rather than wave a white flag when its 68-0 Whitewater at halftime.
Is this the Ric quote from 2005 you referred to?

joelmama,

The Raiders are the visting team, so will wear white/white or white/purple/black. I do not remember their colors in the 2008 Stagg! :)

It never ceases to amaze me... why would someone come on this board and be bothered by what is written enough to respond. I don't like a lot of what Linfield and Whitewater were saying earlier in the week but I just stopped going to those boards and I certainly didn't post anything about it there.

As for the black jerseys I don't even know what year Mount got them, I'd have to think about it.  Maybe you can share that with us voice since you know.  You sound like a third grader, Mommy make Jimmy give it back I had it first.  For crying out loud who the heck cares? Why take things so personal?

Furthermore, I don't even like the black jerseys and wish they'd burn them.  I like Whitewater's a little more because they have numbers on the shoulder but I think purple numbers on black jerseys looks bad and I don't care for either.

And frankly voice if you want to talk about arrogance just go through the west region board from Saturday through Monday.  For crying out loud you haven't won anything yet but by reading what the posters have to say we might as well save our time and not even go to Salem.

Since you're here lets talk numbers.  Why are you're special teams numbers very unimpressive?  Please tell us what is so impressive about Jacobs.  After all his numbers are not.  You would have to go back a long way to find numbers like that for a starting QB at Mount Union?  How can he win conference offensive player of the year?  To me your RB should have won it, Jacobs can't be the offensive MVP of your team can he?  50% completion percentage in the playoffs is bad.  I don't think Whitewater can win without forcing a bunch of turnovers.  Just my opinion we shall see.  I know they're a great team and deserve to be there but so does Mount.  And I think Mount's last two playoff games were against better defenses than they will see Saturday.  Not saying Whitewaters isn't good, it is very good, I just will be surprised if they are as good as the last two I've see that's all.

So if you want to talk football lets talk, if you want to whine about arrogance save it, and you can have the black jerseys please!

Probably this one.

You must get your head out from all that sand then  ;). Seriously, #11 Cory Robinson scored Stagg Bowl 09's second TD (1 yd from Jeff Donovan). You might remember him wearing #1 back then and running into a snow bank after the catch. He caught 4 for 34 yards. Didn't play football last year. Another you should remember is Tyler Huber (#2). He caught the TD pass from Brekke (31 yards) with 1:01 left in the 3rd quarter last year putting the Warhawks up for good at 24-21. Ironically, he had 34 yards receiving on 2 catches. He leads the 'Hawks in receiving with 75 receptions for 1,209 yards and 10 TD's. Another one you would've seen last year had you watched the game is Luke Menzel (#8). He caught a pass last year, too, as a freshman. Blanchard spreads it around nicely, as 5 receivers have over 20 catches on the season. Expect this corps of receivers to catch the ball. You'll get no breaks with drops and only 3 INT's all year thrown by Blanchard (as a team only 8 turnovers total in 14 games - the Warhawks take care of the ball - zero in the last 8 games, I believe).  ;)

The final OAC Playoff Pick-Em spreads are out.  In addition to the game itself (5 points), there are ten 2-point "side bets" ... nearly everyone is still in the running.

Remember, the game is Friday this year.  [OK, that's been pounded into your head, so you don't need the reminder.]  Please get your picks in before the game starts.

i am too lazy to look it up-what's the other purple teams record for the last 7-8 years, and in that weak conference(kidding btw)
In the last seven years, UWW's record against their conference foes:

La Crosse  8-0
Platteville  7-0
River Falls  7-0
Stout  7-0
Oshkosh  7-0
Eau Clair  7-0
Stevens Point  6-1

That's 49-1 in a division that some think is the toughest in D3.

Why do I only go back 7 years?  Their turn-around started when they decided to be the best, they had to play the best, and scheduled a home-and-home with MUC in 2002 and 2003.  They lost 44-21 and 40-17.  But they learned what they had to do to match MUC and have done exactly that!

And I also agree with HSCoach.  HailRaiders ... Shut Up!

And Ric, you don't say much anymore, but what you say resonates!
