As we have clearly entered the boring dead period before the game I thought I'd steal this from Ric's site. It is from a story My brother wrote about the 2003 Muc-Whitewater game. After all the NCAA verbage and political correctness along with the threats to exclude teams with Indian team names from post-season play, I thought the follow excerpt would be interesting. Just proves you don't have to get up very early in the morning to fool the NCAA.
.........

The name "Warhawks" originally came from local Indian history in the northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin area.  In 1804 leaders of the Fox and Sauk tribes agreed to relocate to lands west of the Mississippi River.  Led by Chief Keokuk, most eventually moved into southeastern Iowa but Chief Black Hawk refused saying that the original treaty had been approved by Indians confused by intoxicating liquor.  In 1832 Black Hawk attempted to return to the native lands, precipitating the Black Hawk War which involved the U.S. Army out of Fort Atkinson, eight miles from Whitewater, and the Illinois militia, with young Abe Lincoln serving 90 days as a private.

Although the war lasted only four months, most historians agree that it was probably longer and bloodier than it needed to be, since the Army's strategy involved cutting off the Indians route of retreat and killing as many as possible.  Black Hawk's band of about 1,000 men, women and children, less than 500 of them warriors, was almost totally annihilated, Black Hawk and his two sons were taken as federal prisoners.  Whitewater's sports teams were originally named in honor of the small, brave, band of "Warhawks" and, for some time, featured a mounted Indian on the sidelines at football games.  When "Native American" team names fell out of favor, UW-W, unlike Black Hawk, did not fight till the end: they merely decided that their Warhawk was a bird, designed a new letterhead and logo and told the guy with the horse his services were no longer needed.  In all school and conference press releases and media guides the word (Bird) is added to ensure that there are no misunderstandings.

Seventies,

I grew up in Northern Illinois (DeKalb) and remember going to the Rock River and vising a statue that was done by Lorado Taft in honor of the American Indians in that area. Commonly known as Black Hawk Statue:

ROLL RAIDERS!!!!

seventiesraider

Yes, Larry was a great guy.

CAPFAN-If you haven't nosed around MtUnionFootball.com, roll down the left bar and click on some of the archive years and then click on a particular game. There are great stories by my brother Dick, Larry as well as Ric and lots of great pictures. I've been reading some of Dick's old stories on there this week trying to get ready for the game. This will be the first Stagg Bowl I've gone to without him.

I have read some of Larry's stories from the archived games and they remind me when I was a kid listening to baseball games on the radio were the color guy is explaining everything so you could almost see the game in your minds eye.
Thank you again and enjoy the game. Hope to meet you next year when Cap comes to play (8 time champ) Mount Union ;D

With all that Nate Kmic has done in the playoffs :o does he have enough time on the field to earn his letter? Sounds kind of strange that someone can rush for 1068 yards and 15 touchdowns. A pretty good for a season for most and not earn a letter? Just asking.
The Mount Union coach better give Nate Kmic a football letter. Nate The "Skate" on "The Kmic Express" put Mount Union in the Stagg Bowl!!

Anyone want a free Stagg Bowl ticket? I'm giving the Mount fans first dibs.

My girlfriend was going to go to the game with me, but she's been sick all week. Her dad, who was my backup plan, backed out after the ice storms hit the area this week (he's in insurance and had lots of work to take care of).

Sooooo, there's a seat available. It's in Section C, Row 3 in the West Stands. Yes, that is technically the UWW side, but I got these tix a long time ago, and it's more than likely in the "locals" area. The only down side is that you have to sit next to me.  :D

First come, first serve. Good luck Raiders!

2.7 seconds. An average football player may need more time to score; a great one finds a way. I've seen greatness happen.

I can't wait for this freaking game to start. Man, this is crazy!!!!!!

B4, shoot me a message with your # please, I may have to call you for score updates tomorrow.

skunks_sidekick

Hi OAC Gang!

Skunk, my son, my female sidekick, and myself got down here at around 1 PM today.  I cool day of chilling, goofing off, checking out the field (it looks good), and then heading to the Mount Pep Rally at the Wyndham.  Had a chance to interact with some great Mount fans, parents, alumnae, and students.

I had a name tag on my 9 year old that had his name, and said "Mount Recruit".  LK came over and said hi, and shook my young son's hand, and signed his Go Mount flyer.  He is a class act all the way.

We will hit the tailgate around 10 ish, and we plan on getting around and meeting a lot of great people.  70's, see you there.

Saw a really cool t-shirt they were selling.  On the back it said............"We're Back!"   ;D
