Some teams just play well against Mount (BWC), and some teams just don't. John Carroll"s best teams found a way to loose games they could have, should have ,won, like in 1994, and the Tom Arth teams. Call is luck ,call it karma, call it fate, but we have all seen this happen too many times for it to be coincidence. Coach DeCarlo pointed this out after a couple hard fought games when he said, "we get scrambled up." I don't think JCU has played against a real defense so it will be interesting to see what success they have against a very young, but good,Mount defense. This is not a great Mount Union team. We have one legit All-American,maybe two. In years past we had six, seven or eight in the 22 starters, surrounded by all conference first and second teamers. Raider karma prevails and the Purples win.

I would like to think VK was playing a vanilla offense against BW and saving the faccy stuff for this week. They really looked pretty plain on offense to me. Any comments.  ???

raiderguy,

You are correct! The plain vanilla offense is exactly what the game plan was. IMHO, the team
was just not into it against B-W.
It will be the opposite against JCU. It will be a (MHB playoff
atmoshere). I just hope that the officials are reasonable good, given what is at stake for this game. :-\

So if this is true, this is the first significant difference I've seen acknowledged on these boards that there is, in fact, a significant difference between VK and LK. I always read how LK had his team fully prepared each and every week, no matter the opponent. In everything I've read, I don't remember posts that an LK Raider team "just wasn't into it". That seems like a pretty big shift.

bleedpurple,

I posted that the Raiders were not a sharp as usual against BW, but BW always (regardless of the records) has played tough against Mount Union. I do not think there is a significant difference in the approaches to the game VK vs. LK, so my comment just reflects what I saw. The Raiders ran a plain offense against B-W, not showing anything that could be viewed and reviewed via the tapes. That alone would make the approach to the game be more conservative. Against  JCU, we will see much
more against a tough JCU defense.

Considering that the two teams have played exactly the same schedule outside of one opponent (and Franklin just lost to Bluffton) wouldn't you have to say the same thing about Mount Union?

Hallett said it last week.  The JCU defense is the biggest difference between this season and last season.  It will be interesting to see how the Mount Union offense looks against JCU D.  I know a few of you saw a potential bright spot in the fact that the Streaks gave up over 100 yards rushing to Cartel Brooks.  I feel much better about that than I would giving up over 300 yards to Mees with Mark Myers coming up...because I assume Cartel Brooks will be playing for Heidelberg next week, not suiting up in purple in Alliance.

This is JCU's best shot in years.  It'll be a good one on Saturday, I think.

Well said, toph.

I honestly can't believe I read (earlier and I don't feel like looking for it) that JCU hasn't played someone like Mount Union (I'm paraphrasing here). I remember the early 2000s seeing fans of UMU playoff opponents saying "you haven't played a team like____" and Mount fans were upset (justifiably so because it's a stupid saying).

I doubt we hear HSCoach or Ric say anything like this on the airwaves on Saturday.

I personally feel it's going to be a classic and will be close no matter who wins.

Same could be said about Mount too.   They haven't played against a good defense either.   The best defenses each team has seen this season is their own in practice.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

I am meeting Skunks Sidekick for margaritas before the game.  Anything tailgate wise going on after the game?  I am staying at the Super 8 down the road and will be looking for something to do for the evening.  I plan on hitting the wing joint for some dinner at some point but am always looking for a good tailgate if I can find one.  Also I see that some fans from other teams are coming to the game, hopefully I can meet some of you too.  I am really hoping the game turns out to be as good as it could be, sense a lot of excitement in Alliance.

I haven't checked the schedule but it's High School playoff time. Wouldn't be surprised if there is a decent game around Stark County. Enjoy your stay and travel safe!

Thanks for the clarification 68. Every team, including I'm sure LK's have games they are not sharp. What caught my eye was the phrase "the team was just not into it". Obviously, that would be a big difference from the LK teams that were "into it" every single week, no matter the opponent. If they were just not sharp or playing a conference team that just seems to play them tough, that is a totally different thing. Thanks again for the clarification.

I would feel a lot better if LK was on the sidelines this Saturday.  I hope Vince is up to the challenge.  GO RAIDERS!

For all of you that are going to the Mount Union/JCU game this Saturday, I wish all of you a fantastic time both at the game and your camaraderie "get-togethers".  I don't doubt it will be a great game as you all have discussed, regardless of who wins as well as I'm sure it will be an excellent atmosphere with the huge crowd expected as Raider68 has mentioned.  I recall when I was his guest a couple of years ago at the Mount/Wabash playoff game and it was a great experience.

Likewise, we expect a huge crowd at our home stadium at Hope College as we host our most heated rival Albion College in the MIAA Championship game, which is "for all the marbles" i.e. the title and the AQ to the playoffs.  Historically, this type of situation in which the title game has come down to the last game of the season and, particularly between Albion and Hope, while not uncommon in the past, has not happened for a few years, at least for those two particular teams.  So I expect the same type of crowd that Raider68 and you guys are expecting for your game and I expect it to be a close game, unless, of course, someone implodes and it becomes a route.  I just hope we have great weather.  Anyway, again, all the best to all of you for a great time.

formerd3db,

Saturday is no doubt a big day for Mount Union, JCU, Hope and Albion. The weather should be great.
Here in Ohio 50+ and sun and I assume in Holland about the same. I will be pulling for your
alma mater to win the MIAA and be in the playoffs.

The game at Mount Union will be close and a good one, and for the first time in awhile it will have
that playoff atmosphere with a conference opponent. GO RAIDERS, GO HOPE! :)

For those not fortunate enough to be making the trip to Alliance, does anyone know if there will be a video feed available?

amonachino

there will be no video streaming of the game.  you can listen to the game on your cell from 1-330-445-7900 anywhere in USA.  STO will rebroadcast the game. check your local listings in your area to get the times.
