Garcon broke Art Monk's Redskins single season receptions mark yesterday.  Garcon's last catch yesterday was #107 eclipsing Monk's record of 106.

From time to time I troll other boards to take in the feedback. This was true after the National Championship game. I read alot of 'we should be number 2 cause we only lost by 1' and 'we lost in the final minute' - 'the real championship game was played last week', etc.. and it made me think. So here is my poetic response

You stand and rejoice "The King is Dead"
But how many crowns lay upon your head?
For while the king may be down, his eye blacked
He is resilient – defiant – the king will be back.
But for now you trumpet "Whitewater is King"
Alas you have forgotten one simple thing:
The road to Salem has many turns
But Championship quests make the Raiders Burn
Raiders know the path and shall return indeed
To seize their crown from the Whitewater breed
The Cardinal, Cru, Cats and the rest
Waste time wondering "Are not we the second best"
This spells the difference between Raiders and you
You think that it matters to be number two.

Roll Raiders~Roll!

I'm curious to hear thoughts from Raider nation as to whether you think it's a good idea for VK to be both head coach and DC- especially in his early years as HC.

Basing this only on my opinion - I think it hurt the D to have VK "split" duties. Big difference from being focused on D and recruiting - to have the added issues of HC and all that goes with it. I am sure it takes time to figure out "where to be and when" for lack of a better way to say it. No matter how downsized of a role LK took the last few years - all VK had to do was focus on the defense so I am sure it will take sometime to figure it all out.

emma17,

After the first year of double duty, I would say no. I would reserve comments until we see how 2014 unfolds. Check
my previous post. IHMO, that is where the HC could focus on.  Hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas and Happy
and Healthy New Year! :)

As I said in my post earlier I think as he gains confidence in Dartt as OC he will shift his focus almost soley to defense again.  I'm guessing he would like to get to a point where it's run exactly as he and his dad did it...HC deals w/ his side of the ball, coordinator has total control of the other side.  Dartt did a very good job this year, IMO.  I'm sure the offense's performance this year went a long way to earning Dartt that trust.

Glad to see the abundance of classy Mount fans giving a ton of respect to whitewater days following the game. It's nice to hear this board's thoughts about the matchup, rather than some fans talking serious sh!t all year just fall off the face of the earth once they lose (purplesuit). Frankly, I expected nothing less.

Hope everyone enjoys their holidays, and take care.

It makes it easier for us to be classy when we got beaten the way we did.  No use complaining about a missed call or two or a dropped pass when they wouldn't have made a difference.  It was a humbling defeat that, for many of us, reminded us of where our outlook was at the beginning of the year with a new HC and nearly new lineup on offense.

Now comes the hard work.  Now we need to use the humbling defeat as inspiration to fight that much harder, get that much better, and train that much longer instead of allowing it to become a new normal.  I have no doubt Vince is already working on that.

I agree. Well done. I considered weighing in on some of the other boards with something like, "You will know you have arrived when you could care less whether you are #2 or #5 or #105." Desertraider said it much more eloquently.

Merry Christmas to all Mount Union posters.  I have no doubt we will meet again one day. Think Mount may be a bit pumped up for that game?  ;)

A bit over-dramatic.  When BB still had a third-place game, I was intensely proud that IWU, despite only one championship, had ZERO 4th place finishes in 5 trips to the final four.  And if you really don't care whether you are #2 or #105, you are DEFINITELY not ready to move to #1! :P

With rare exceptions, you gotta be close before you can actually do it.  While they may not be remembered outside of the school that did it, where you finish below #1 DOES matter.

In 1996, IWU BB lost to Rowan by one point in the title game.  FOUR starters were seniors.  In 1997, they won it all.  Being close DOES matter.  With UMHB and NCC losing by one point each in the semis, a match-up in the finals next year would not surprise me in the least.  (There are MANY other match-ups that would also not surprise me! ;D)

With the number of seniors on NCC, I'll be shocked if they get back to the Semi's in '14.     Few programs have shown that kind of depth and consistency.   And NCC isn't one of them.  Yet.    They're close, but not yet.

And I agree on the #2 debate.   I could care less whether Mount finishes this season if it isn't #1.    #2, 5 or 10 doesn't mean anything to me when you've been at the top as much as Mount.     Maybe 15 years ago I would have cared.   And maybe 15 from now Mount will be bad enough that I'll care again.   But in this era, it doesn't matter to me where the final ranking is unless it's #1.

And for the record, I'd rank them as:
UWW
MHB
Mount
NCC
Linfield
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

Though we disagree on the importance of ranking below #1, out rankings are identical. ;)

I prefer the term hyperbolic, but, yes, definitely exaggeration to make a point. I would contend that the very existence of the Third Place game would make the ranking more meaningful because it was part of the tournament and earned on the court with another victory.  However, the top 10 rankings (after #1) in football are all merely a composite opinion of 25 people after the season's body of work is already completed. These teams all were who they were. The only thing left is the slicing and dicing of analysis. I would contend the opinions of those 25 people are interesting and worthy of discussion. I would also contend the opinions of those 25 people ought not stir quite the level of vitriol I have seen on some of the boards.
