New to board. Looking over football threads and saw the Mount Union recruit thread. Looks like a great recruiting class to this point on paper. No wonder they are always in D3 title game. Wanted to comment on the kid from Florida.( MLB Kyle Grieser 5'11' 225). Coached against him for 3 years ...kid gave us fits. Played against D1 level backs week in and out and was knocking heads all over the place. Hits like a truck. Mount Union got a good one there. Word is he had his heart set on Mount Union from the start, and passed on solid offers from higher level schools.
Again great to be here...looks like a lot of knowledgeable football folks here. Always love talking football.

Welcome to the board and thanks for the info on Kyle Grieser.

I'm also new to the board (recently started reading this fall), but I've been a Mount Union follower since the late 90's. I went to all the games at home last year, including the playoffs, then the Stagg Bowl and just enjoyed watching the team gel throughout the season. I've got a lot on my mind, so stay with me.

I feel that even though they lose Burke, some O-line and a couple of defensive contributors, they will be just fine with the return of most of the defensive contributors and some explosive offensive play makers as well. I think Scott becomes the QB and they will run more often getting Mitchell, Nemeth and Johnson plenty of carries as all are quality ball carriers. Namdar, Kennedy, Gainer and Ruth are a great start with WR's, but the O-line needs to step up again next year if we want to have any success in the playoffs.

My biggest worry is the Purple Raiders D-line. When we were winning championships, our line dominated and got pressure often. I understand formations have changed some (I'm not a master of breaking down defensive schemes) with 3 down linemen instead of traditional 4 to go against spread teams, but we need pressure. I do know that they changed to 4 down linemen for Whitewater and it became somewhat effective, although their Oline was great.

Positives going into next year:
Scott is a play maker no matter position.
Running back situation is stable with 3 capable of starting (Mitchell, Nemeth and Johnson).
Oline returns some starters that improved last year.
WR has 4 capable of playing right now.
Defensive back field and linebackers have plenty of depth.
Return Lally and Furda on DL.
Return coaching staff!
Recruiting class looks pretty nice so far. I've watching most of their highlight tapes (I know they are highlights, not every play) and I really like Lowry at QB as he reminds me of Burke's HS highlight film with lots of great runs and keeps plays alive. He is also accurate on tough plays it seems. Zorn also throws some nice balls, but not as many throws in stride or under pressure plays. Hofmeister looks like Fechko on the DL and has great size too. Rutledge, Duguay, Filipiak, Howard (undersized), and Grieser can all create chaos at LB/DL positions. Any time you're getting a couple of big Massillon and Wadsworth (big tradition schools and expectations high) boys that can play, that's a nice addition. If I remember correctly, a couple of them made all Ohio teams as well. Basically, it looks like the coaches went out and produced a nice class.

Things to work on (not negatives):
Need a QB obviously. If Scott isn't answer or they think Burkes, Peyakov or another can play. This is assuming Namdar stays at WR.
Need a couple of OL to step in starting positions, as well as for depth.
Need WR to take Scott's place in slot if he moves to QB.
Need at least 5-6 DL capable of playing at a high level.

Needless to say, I'm excited to watch some Purple Raider football next year. I even like the new uniforms and helmets as well!

Dr. Acula

Welcome and +k for a strong first post!

You're spot on regarding the line play.  They absolutely have to figure out a way to get more pressure with their defensive front.  Furda made nice strides in his development at DE.  If he continues to develop he could be a play maker.

I'm actually not as concerned about the O line, at least the starters.  Frank and Doraty return as does Jenkins who has started at tackle already and Presutti who has played a lot over the last 2 years.  I think the O line will be solid from day 1.

As for the skill guys, I agree with you.  I'm not concerned about RB or WR.  I think the 3 main guys end up being Namdar, Kennedy and Ruth.  Nemeth definitely earned his stripes at RB, IMO.  That kid runs hard and come playoff time you need a back like him.  Mitchell and Johnson are going to torch most teams with their quickness.

The biggest question to me is QB.  The expectation every year is national title so I can't see a freshman winning the job unless they're just other worldly talented.  The depth at WR certainly allows for Scott (or Namdar) to play QB if they're the best choice.  My hope is that someone emerges and allows Scott to stay at WR.  He showed last year in the infancy of his development at WR that he has the potential to be a star.  If he is out there at WR with those other 3 guys that's A LOT of athleticism on the field.  Dartt would be smiling ear to ear with those toys to play with.  But it's all for naught if you can't block up front or find a guy to get them the ball.  Luckily they have a guy around there that knows a thing or two about spotting QB talent.

Dr. Acula

And welcome to flaballcoach too!  +k for you too.

We were getting pretty light as it relates to Mount Union fans posting in here.  Good thing some new guys showed up. ;)
OAC Champs: 1942 (one title ties us with Ohio State)
OAC Runners-Up: 2017, 2016, 2015, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2004, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1982, 1941 (Stupid Mount Union!)
MOL Champs: 1952, 1950

Raider 68

Welcome to the new OAC posters! +K

A few thoughts on the 2015 Raiders:

- agree with Dr. Acula, the O line should be fine
- The D line needs some work, and the Raiders still are not getting the size for D- line guys as they have in the past.
There are many reasons for this, DII schools etc. Against the playoff teams it really does matter.
- The WR's look strong with Namdar, Kennedy, Ruth etc,
- IMHO, Scott will be the QB, Just too talented not to use him there, even though he is great at WR. For the Spring he is the
  starter
- RB's look good for 2015, another one or two recruits would also help.

There is however always that surprise player that makes a difference. :)

Cecil signed a deal with the Houston Texans today. 2 years, $6 million, $2.5 guaranteed. Hate to see him go to another black hole QB situation, but at least he found a contract somewhere. It is a sweetheart deal for the Texans if Cecil can stay on the field.

In other OAC'ers in the pros news, Kevin Burke and Luc Meacham (Mount Union) and Mark Myers (JCU) participated in Toledo's Pro Day today. Haven't heard results or teams in attendance.

Dr. Acula

Neither team has a QB so why couldn't the Browns beat that Texans deal?

Craft_Beermeister

I saw some stuff recently on a Browns board that Mark Meyers alegedly in some big trouble.  A poster on the board indicated that the pending charges against him are ORC 2913.31A3 - 5 counts, plus Grand Theft and Telecomm fraud thrown in.

An additional posting indicated Meyers had an OVI in Lyndhurst reduced to a Reckless Operation due to a legal issue last Fall.  Mark then got an OVI in Pepper Pike, along with a Drug Paraphernalia charge in January 2015.  Those remain pending.

I thought the same thing, but then figured Mallet/Hoyer might be better for Cecil than whatever Cleveland plans to roll out with. What a scary thought.  ???

Yeah, I was getting worried that this was becoming just a Wilma and Musky board! :o ;D

Not sure if this is more UMU than the WIAC board is UWW - kind of a close call! :P

(In fairness, I don't think either UMU or UWW posters (with a handful of exceptions) chase away others - at worst, it may be that they tend to just ignore them until they go away.  Comes with being a conference board with an 800-pound gorilla, IMO.  Despite the domination of NCC for six(?) years, the CCIW avoided it because the Cards were at most a 600-pound gorilla, and so many posters are both football and basketball, and they are NOT a gorilla there!)

When you come here and drop assertions that a guy is facing criminal charges, one would think you could link to something (court docket? newspaper?) proving that's true other than "I heard on a Browns board..."
I was small but made up for it by being slow...

I indicated it was reported as allegedly...  The link is http://cle.scout.com/forums/4409-the-watercooler/13678800-john-carroll-qb-mark-myers-sounds-like-an-intriguing-prospect?s=149&page=2

There is some information on page 1 in the subject as well.  I wasn't able to find anything else on Google searches.

Geez, Craft. You may want to post nothing when it comes to impugning a kid's reputation.  Earlier, you mysteriously talked about inside information that would eventually come out regarding a hiring process.  All these vague allusions to something you supposedly knew that others did not, but no details.  And now, when it comes to allegations that could be a serious deal for a kid, you cite a specific section of the law as posted on a message board.  I'm trying to figure out how you roll.
