Since the Coppage and Beaver era, UWW hasn't had one great RB, but rather 2 or 3 really good backs each year since those two graduated.

It's hard to make the argument on having one great back or 2-3 really good backs by committee. Both have been successful for UWW.

You mean the past two years?

Kind of....this will be the 4th season since Coppage graduated, and UWW has won 2 in the past 3 years since moving to a RB by committee. Once you have a solid O-line it doesn't matter if you have a great RB or a solid 2-3 RBs. Results will be the same.

I don't think Coppage graduated until 2015.  Being out of eligibility and graduating are not the same thing...though maybe at Whitewater they are?

Very true - Rocky Pentello had graduated, worked and retired but still seemed to have eligibility left over. ;D

On a side note - did Coppage ever turn things around off the field? I believe he had some drug charges a few years back. He was a wickedly talented back that I was glad to see move on.

It appears that he has.  Looks like he is running his own business...a legal one this time.

ONU comes out of the gate with freshman Will Freed at QB.  Bears up 7-0 after his 1st career TD pass.  He's sounded very crisp throwing the ball so far as they've been moving the ball well.  A fumble by Magazine in the red zone cost them a chance for more points last drive, but other than that they've sounded pretty good all around so far.

ONU squanders another scoring chance this time missing a 34 yard FG.  Midway through the 2nd it's still 7-0 Bears.

Utica hits a long pass play to tie the game 7-7.

ONU is allergic to the red zone.  They get a 1st down to the 18 yd line and then proceed to snap it over Freed's head all the way back to the 45 the very next play.

Huh??

Ricardo Johnson is listed as #2 on the depth chart and has not played so far.

Lot of pub and hype around that guy to get beat out by a freshman.  What a letdown. I was anxious to see what the big deal was.

Me too.  But Freed is 15-17 for 196 yards and a score in the first half so he's making DP look like a genius so far.

Dr. Acula

Utica executes the 2 minute drill and kicks a FG to take a 10-7 lead to half.  Very even first half.  Both teams passed well.  Both defenses did a good job of bending, but not breaking.  They both gave up yards, but it was a long pass play for each that put both TD's on the board.  ONU definitely has to be unhappy as they got no points out of 3 red zone trips.

Dr. Acula

ONU outscores Utica 15-0 in the 4th and wins 29-22.  Freed goes 27-36 for 439 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT in his first start.  Impressive stuff.
