Spurrier is 70 years old.  He's done more to make South Carolina football relevant than any individual in the school's history.

He offers a rational explanation for why he is doing it now. He also sends this message: "When something is inevitable, I believe you do it right then," Spurrier told the media. "You don't wait a week. You don't wait two weeks. This has to happen, let's do it and let's get started in a new direction. That's what we hope to do today."  Would you have him stay and go through the motions?

And why are you putting "when it doesn't go like you want, quit" in quotes?  You're not quoting anything that he or anyone else in the articles stated.

Hey BW, hold on a minute, don't forget about Lou Holtsssssss. He did a pretty good job there too! And he is from my mom's home town, East Liverpool, Ohio. Home of the Potters!   :o

I think it's possible to have shades of grey here.  I'm (mostly) with badgerwarhawk - but I do feel jknezek and desertraider on the timing issue.  If he wasn't up for the grind of another season, I think he should have just walked away before the season.  I don't love it that he quit midseason.

But, I do think the idea that he's sending a "message to the kids" to quit when the going gets tough is a little off.  He's 70 years old, and he could have quit and gone golfing 10 years ago; instead he worked very hard to make South Carolina football relevant in the SEC.  Not sure that I'm really seeing a "when it doesn't go the way you want, quit" here.  And I do think there is something to the comments that badgerwarhawk posted that, once he made up his mind that he was done, he decided that it was time to just walk away now.
I was small but made up for it by being slow...

It's also possible that Spurrier felt that S. Car's record (2-4 with three top 10 teams to go) would result in this season's narrative becoming all about him—the media may have nothing left to do but launch into two months of "Should Spurrier retire?" "Has the game passed him by?" and that it'd be better for the program if that didn't happen.

Sir Battlescars

So I was browsing around the JCU website today at lunch, and I cam across a really cool archive page! They have a lot of the old programs from JCU football games. Here's the one from JCU vs. Mount Union in 1932!

There are a lot of other cool old ones as well
Seems like 25 cents was a lot for a program in the middle of the depression.  Most likely about $4  (maybe more) in todays dollars.

All due respect to UWW

MTU changes Head Coach in 2013 and makes it to two straight Stagg Bowls.

UWW changes Head Coach in 2015 and loses in regular season.

(I know WIAC is a tougher conference than OACand UWW won past two Stagg bowls)

Just having some fun

Onward on, John Carroll

Wondering if someone could help me out.  A friend of mine and I were discussing JCU's lost opportunity to make a third straight playoff appearance.  We both seemed resigned to the fact that while the NCAA has almost, without exception, given a playoff berth to a second place team with one loss (to Mount Union).  However, my friend seemed to think that there was a time when a two loss team from the OAC was given a playoff berth.  Anyone remember that?  I will do the research if necessary but thought someone on here might know. The only won I can think of is ONU early 2000s but one their losses was to I-AA Dayton so I exclude it.

Any thoughts?

Dr. Acula

I think Cap made it at 8-2 during the Pentello era.

Still burns that CAP got the nod in 2005 when ONU was 8-2 as well with the first victory over Mount Union in OAC play since the Lincoln presidency.
