Sorry for the double post but somethings been bothering me most of the the day.

"CAP scored 25 in the 4th mostly on the 2's to make it a ballgame."

In order for Cap to score on the twos, they would need to be in the game, and from past expereinces with ONU and Tom Kaczkowski, I have a hard time believeing that the two's got much action in this game.  Afterall this is the same Kaczkowski who in 98 kept a senior QB who had lost his job to Franzer in the game so he could throw 10 TD passes in one game, 7 to Vagedes.  Thi sis also the same Kaczkowski who went for 2 in 1999 to make it 50-0 at halftime.

While I am not claiming a moral victory for Cap, it would be more truthful if you just admitted that Capital had a furious comeback, but the PBears were able to hold them out.

Again, I cannot beleive that Kaz would play the 2s late in a game against Cap in which the final score was 52-46.

To further back up my beleif that the 2s did not indeed play here is the ONU player participation from the link in my previous post.
Player participation:

  Ohio Northern: 1-Tony Mitchell, 2-Jamal Robertson, 4-LarryCartwright, 5-Dan Stewart, 6-RandyVanTilburg, 14-Troy Welsch,
  15-Shane Franzer, 16-FrankVanDresser, 17-Jeremy Agozzino, 22-Mike Tanner, 23-C.J. Charp, 24-Curt Hartman, 25-Brian Brown,
  26-Tim Lewis, 29-Jeremy Presar, 34-Joel Acheson, 37-Carl Bradley, 38-JeremySlaughter, 39-Brad Klaus, 42-John Tevis, 43-Brad Lohr,
  49-Kevin Schaefer, 51-Joe Miller, 75-Bri.Christopher, 81-Jarue Mark, 86-Matt Basham, 89-J.R. Cipra, 91-Josh Vogel,
  92-Scott Sweat, 93-Brian Jemision, 97-Jamal Fowlkes, 99-Doug Kimmet.

By my count that is 32 players.  Unless ONU was doing  Ironman football back then it would be difficult to believe too many seccond stringers played.

Received Keith's year in review this morning. It's 14,000 words! No wonder it took four weeks to write!

Will take a while to edit and aiming for a Wednesday evening release.

Your participation does not included any of the 10 offensive lineman including myself that played in the game. Also, they left out 2 starters #33 FB and #82 DE. 8 of the players you listed were 2nd teamers on defense and played special teams. All of them played defense. So in fact 44 players maybe more played in the game. I know you have little reference based on 1 site, but as I tell my students, do your homework. I still know it was a great comeback even on the 2's. I thought I would give you perspective from someone who played in the game. Just ask my good friend D. Peterson.

Looking forward to seeing a lot of you Tuesday night at the Raider Recognition Rally. They'd probably frown on us setting up grills in the Campus Center parking lot. Don't worry Olinemom, I got the pictures ready and 70'sWife will be taking them through the line. I'll still have to screw up the courage to ask Larry Kehres to autograph that picture for you. I've known him since I was 19, but I still stand in awe of him and his accomplishments. :-*

I have faith in you!! ;D  But maybe Kevin could do it for you?  After all kids can do just about anything these days.  I thank you for even offering!!  Have a great time.  I'll prabably be having cold pizza or something even liess appetizing.  I can't taste much these days.  Somebody breathed on me last week and if I can figure out who, I'm going to bust them when I get enough energy--may be in a couple of weeks.  At least that's how it feels at the moment!!

reality check

Back from a long weekend in Arizona but I did make sure to catch both the Hula Bowl and Jamal's action in the NFC Championship.  (Gotta have your priorities right?!?)

I know a couple have already commented on both Hostetler and Jamal but I was asked by reccespynav so here's my reactions and I know there will be more info here than anyone not interested in orange and black would care to know but here goes.

Wes had a 24 yard kickoff to start things.  He put a good shot on the lead blocker on the following kickoff return, blowing up the blocker and causing the returner to trip over his own blocker for a solo tackle on defense and just a 19 yard return.  Brad Smith had a 3rd and 17th scramble where Wes was covering an Iowa receiver, he was beat on the scramble move but hung with the receiver step for step on the overthrown ball.  He returned the subsequent punt for 5 yards taking that big hit from the defender.  (He actually did a good job of catching the punt as he had to sprint about 10-15 yards upfield on the poor kick.  I was just crossing my fingers he would catch it cleanly.  The sprint on Wes' part was the reason the hit was so big as both guys were trucking in opposite directions.)   His second punt return was for about 4 yards and he had to cover some ground to catch this one too.  The West punter must have either been punting poorly or Wes was lining up/being told to line up way to deep for the punter's ability.  The kicks were well short of where he was lining up pre-snap.  I would also like to note that there was a PR from another East player in the first half where the kid lost yards and the kickoff to start the second half was mishandled by a Stanford player for the East.  So Wes' compliments were not doing much.  What I liked about the kick catch interference play was that Wes got himself in good position to catch the ball, took the big hit, rolled over, took his mouthpiece out, and trotted off the field without missing a beat, knowing the whole time he had the penalty.

He did nothing that turned heads but he absolutely held his own.  I was very happy with his game.

With regards to Jamal, he had a great game.  I know he isn't going to get props from the NY sports radio or ESPN as being a competent backup RB.  Those guys don't care about a no-name like Jamal but I knew he could show people he is a solid back-up that can deliver when given a chance.  Of course, Carolina looked horrible but he managed to have a respectable stat line with 19 yards on 4 carries, 5 catches for 38 yards and 3 kickoff returns for 69 yards.  He is auditioning as much for Carolina as he is for the rest of the NFL.  I hope he gets another serious shot.

reality check

I was in the stands for that 2000 game at Capital (or rather at tWhitehall high school) when they played Capital.  I don't know if there was a Capital defender that actually tackled Jamal that day.  He had a run in the first half where he went into the pile at the LOS, disappeared for a split second, and came out the other side at full speed for a 30-40 yard gain.  Look at the scoring summary.  He had two TD's where his score WAS the drive. There were a 52 yard drive in the 4th and an 81 yard TD on an 82 yard drive.

It was a great effort by Dan Bartholemew and the Bears let off the gas a little in the second half.  I know you don't want to believe that but they did put in the 2's in on D for most of the 4th quarter and when it got tight, some of the 1's were back in there on the defensive side.  Bartholemew had a career day that started halfway through the second quarter but Jamal was well on his way to his own career day by that time.

As I recall it, Kaz left the O in for the entire game but I do know for a fact that the defensive 2's played and gave up much of CAP's comeback.  I don't have faded memories of this game.  Jamal's individual play still sticks out in my mind.  I remember commenting to my father, "You almost take it for granted that when Jamal met a defender head to head or one on one, that he was going to do something special."  I also remember vividly that there was a big vball match back at ONU that day and Kendall Baker kept getting updates phoned to his cell phone so that those interested could follow both games.  I also remember him being very tired from doing pushups with the cheerleaders (but that happened lots in the Jamal/Vagedes/Franzer days.)

Olinemom=Mission accomplished. BTW Larry asked if it was for the Brownie Lady. Your five photo's are already snailing their way to Bridgewater. The O lineman were excited someone wanted their picture.

MtFan, Purple and others-Great to get a chance to at least say hi in the middle of basketball season. Hope you all got all your new "We're Back" gear.

And to Watson, McDavid, Casto, Wells, Wolf, Mason, Stickley and all the other Seniors, thanks for the memories.

Thanks a whole lot!!!  I can't wait to get my pictures.  You are the greatest.  What say we do this all again next year?  I'm amazed that Coach Kehres even knew about the Brownie Lady.  But that's good!  I can take my cold to bed now!  When does football start agin?

opb,

After reading your post and looking at the list, you are correct. There are no offensive linemen listed.  Touche.

Roomed with Petey and played IM basketball and softball with him.  He was the first guy with a PS2.  That alone made him awesome.

I remember the day Vagedes scored his 7 touchdowns.
I was covering the opposite reciever and he said to me that I don't have to cover him they are not throwing to me anyways.

Having a debate about the best defensive team ever at Mount.I'd say 2005,1997,1993,1995,1992 in  that order.Anyone care to list their top five?

My list

Is the "free Playstation" on the front page the good looking woman in the background or the hunk of metal/plastic in the foreground? Pat might set a record for hits depending on the answer.

The 1998 MUC defense was a great one. They were magnificent in the playoffs and broke Rowans back in the title game. Jason Hall strips the ball.Near poetry.

JK

From an opposing O-lineman perspective, here is how I would rank those MUC defenses that I have some knowledge about (I played against the 93 and 95 teams and coached against the 97 one).

93, 97, 95...

again, this is strictly o-lineman talking, but the front 7 in 93 were unbelievable.  Hallet was a beast, Frink was the best DE in the conference, Rich Dine was the other DE and was an All American the next year, and I want to say future AA Liggett was in the DT rotation.

As for the LB's that year, Rob Rodgers at OLB, I think, was the Tressel or Edwards award winner and an AA, and Capozella at MLB would become an AA the next year.

And that is just the AA's, not the All-OACer's.  If I recall, the entire front 7 earned either 1st or 2nd team all OAC in 93.  Ballard and Atwood and Bubonics and those guys were great, but make no mistake, MUC's first National championship was won as much with D as it was with O.

That front 7 was more talented than the other two.  95 had AA's DT Liggett and OLB Wervey and all OAC guys like OLB Black, DT Payne, and MLB Hall, but several of them were pretty young.  BJ Payne didn't become unblockable until the next year.  As Payne improved, so did Hall, as payne kept OL's from getting to him, Hall and Black could roam freely and make plays.

In 97 DT Eismon, and MLB Hall were the only AA's.  DE Yoder would become an AA the next year and Hall would repeat as AA.  DT Domin got into a few games and would be an AA in 99.

So, I vote for 93...

What about the line (both D and O) from the Mount team in the 2001 Stagg Bowl that beat Bridgewater that season?  Where would you rate them?  Those guys were MASSIVE and NOT slow (as I recall, without having a game program in front of me at present, their combined average weight was listed as just 2 lbs below that of the Ohio State starting lines that year (305?).  Seeing that team in the Stagg that year, I was very impressed, even though Mount just got by a good Bridgewater team.  Comments anyone?
