Anybody surprised that Lowery didnt see the field? I would think that his legs would add dimension to a gameplan. NCWs QB got rid of the ball so fast that he never had time to go through any progressions. Thats a coach realizing they cant block the blitz that well.

Interesting comments from a knowledgeable source. He said the staff expected Fulford to be nervous going in but his reaction was just the opposite. He was very relaxed, with a, "what took you so long to get me in" attitude. He actually had the poise to change a play at the goal line by audible, and they scored. Think about that for a minute. I guess the coaching staff concluded, "why wait." This is a young team with 16 freshmen on the two deep, with a couple sophomore receivers who are really good. The defense is the primary concern. They just don't have the couple great players as in years past. Don't be surprised if the John Carroll freshman do well against Mount today, the best players are on the varsity.

I was surprised until I watched the game.  I figured freshmen would have some happy feet, make a few bad throws, pull it down and run too early, etc.  Really didn't see any of that.  All of them played with poise that I wasn't expecting at this point.  I still think Lowry is the most explosive runner at QB, but the three youngsters are athletic enough to run the read option too.  They may just lack Lowry's burst running it, but they also aren't listed at 5'9" like Lowry.

The Dr. is in. Thanks.

I heard this as well with the staff thinking Fulford may have more upside than Poorman. The concern I heard was Fulfords decision making isn't always what it needs to be. I have to say I think the play calling was not favorable for Poorman, as it was very conservative and rightly so. Fulford looks to be more explosive, but I bet we'll see them rotate for the next two games to let them settle it in a game.

On a defensive note, it's obvious that we won't see the defense that we've had the past couple of seasons. We will give up points, but to be fair, NCW didn't have too many deep drops from the qb with many quick hitters. Dear looked good and our secondary was solid. I think our coaches had a vanilla game plan, not showing too much. I can only remember a couple of blitzes called, but we didn't need to.

I like the promise that the team showed and I can guarantee that we will be seeing some young guns get lots of time this year. I'm sticking with my Evans-Morris prediction getting a lot of carries, he just needs to carry the ball tighter.

QuoteD.O.C., here is the freshmen class by state post from earlier this year.  FYI.

Interesting and overwhelming. Thank-you for leaving Hawaii to the NWC.

A 10 game Frosh schedule helps a program immensely.

Dr. Acula

Two things that are key factors to sustaining the success are the full JV schedule and playing at least 14 games annually.  Aside from the additional game experience that's also a full month of additional practice each year for them to develop.

Week #2 results of the OAC Pick-Em have been posted.

This was a brutal weekend as only a handful of folks earned more than half of the available ten points.  Sir Battlescars again seemed to be locked in, scoring 8 points to take the second week in a row.

Week # 3 spreads come out Monday night as we start conference play.

Never underestimate the stimulation of eccentricity.

I confused with the above sentence.  I see Mount had only 4 freshman on the two deep.  13 freshman dressed (3 did not participate).

Isn't it always the case, at every program, that the best freshman are on varsity?  Any freshman who is good enough to play at the varsity level will be on varsity...even at mighty Mount Union.

I made the relatively short trip (for me) east to Rocky Mount yesterday.  Fulford would be my QB going forward.  The offense looked more in sync, much more explosive, and flat out better.  Defensively the front seven didn't bring as much pressure as I've grown accustomed to seeing from Mount Union in recent years.

It'll be interesting to see how they grow this season.

The write-up on the ONU website makes that final play at Utica sound very controversial.  Didn't see it so I don't know but supposedly it bounced between two Polar Bears and appeared to be in the hands of both (dual possession) in the end zone and still called incomplete;game over.  Crazy ending to a crazy game.

It was strange.  The refs took their sweet time before indicating it was an incomplete pass too.

But the ONU players weren't exactly freaking out about it either.  I found that to be odd if it was indeed a catch.  Then a few minutes later both teams were huddled together at midfield praying or something.  So if ONU was indeed hosed then they took it about as graciously as anyone could hope to expect.

Dean Paul.  He's all class and his teams follow his lead.

Out of curiosity - does anyone know the last time Mount did not score in the 1st quarter of an game to start the season? I looked back to 2000 but box scores only go back to like 2008 on the Mount site.

I moved to Chapel Hill last year for work and my wife.  It's about an hour and 20 minutes from Rocky Mount.
