After 2 turnovers by Fulford does Poorman get tbe #1 QB nod now or does the audition continue?. What has Lowery and Peyakov have to do to see some playing time? Change positions? I like what I see at RB but I wish we had a real downhill running back for those sloppy field games. Which OAC teams defense will really test UMUs Offense?

Lowry is already on the DB depth chart.

After attending the Mount game today, here is my take;

- The offense  played well despite the two fumbles.

- The execution of the offense looked good for only the second game with limited penalties.

- The running game was solid with all the running backs today.

- It seemed to me that Poorman  had more poise that Fulford. Against a top opponent the two fumbles could have
  been game changers.

- The defense against the run was good, but pass defense needs work, too many open receivers.  Marietta
did not help themselves with the dropped passes.

Also, as a PSA don't forget the W&J/TMC game starts at noon.  Nice little appetizer.

We did our best to make this a bit of snoozer

*I was at the Brain Bowl in Cambridge for RPI vs MIT with LewDogg and Johnny Utes Utah.  Nice day.

If you talk to LewDogg again anytime soon tell him to forget about the trolls and naysayers and get back on the boards.

I listened to the game and tend to agree with the comment on the defense. It seemed Etta had several opportunities to possibly score on deeper passes but the drops were costly. The pass defense seems to be the weakness right now. Could be just inexperience at DB or not getting pressure on the QB - or both. Etta liked the matchup with Louis Berry and went to his side often. Could be just the size mismatch because I recall him covering well last year.

I tried to watch some of the BW/JCU game to see a little of BW before next week. What a snooze fest! 3-0 at half. JCU QB was like 9 for 23. BW was totally ground and pound to that point (like 80% runs). If BW can't or won't throw - the Mount run D will have a feast. I turned it off after 3 or 4 minutes of 3rd qtr and saw that JCU woke up late and won. Regardless my take was that BW is as close to one dimensional (maybe 1.25 dimensional ???)as it gets (outside of maybe Musky) and JCU is going to throw no matter how effective the run is. Moeglin for JCU kept passing even though the run game was averaging like 6 yds a carry and was doing well. Maybe Tom kept calling the passes due to his affinity for the passing game? I get it - but if it aint working - make em stop the run.

For next week my take is that Mount will be able to run the ball on BW. BWs DBs looked good against JCU but they had help from the pressure - can they get that against Mount? If not then BW will have their hands full. On offense - if BW is going to be 80% run then it will be a long day. However, I expect to see BW pass a lot next week. Looking at the Etta film will reveal some opportunities that they must try to exploit. Good day to all D3'ers.

Forget everything I just posted. Box score for JCU/BW is UGLY! Qbs:

Plagens (BW) 3 of 15 for 28 yds (24 yds on 1 completion)
Moeglin (JCU) 11 of 28 for 82 yds and 3 INTs.

88 combined rushing attempts. 30 combined first downs (21 by JCU). Looks like Tom ignored the pass after half time after all and BW couldn't stop the run. Oh well. Mount/BW will be interesting. Maybe BW won't throw because they can't???

3 Catches for 28 yards? That's unbelievable in this day and age, is JCU's pass D that good or is BW's pass offense that bad?

Wasn't expecting the Heidelberg - ONU game to be a blowout. WOW! What a great way for Coach Donaldson to get his first head coaching win. Congrats to him! I expect Heidelberg to receive some top 25 votes this week.

Dr. Acula

I watched most of the game Saturday.  Quick thoughts...

I agree with others that have posted about the pass D.  Etta definitely seemed to have some success on short passes.  And they had a couple drops that would have been nice, longer gains too.  I saw some positives with the secondary though.  White is going to be a nice player at safety.  He and Berry will be the backbone of the secondary going forward.  I also thought Groves did a nice job in run support.  He can hit.

I thought Poorman and Fulford both showed flashes of what they can do.  Poorman's bomb to Hargrove was right in stride.  Fulford showed nice touch on his TD to Ruth.  He needs to hold onto the ball, but the one fumble was when it was raining and the ball just slipped out of his hand.  I'll give him a pass there.  They also mentioned during the game that is was with around 4 minutes to go in the 3rd before Mount threw an incomplete pass.  They didn't air it out Saturday, but that's impressive nonetheless.  All in all both QB's continue to impress.  I think we will see both play a lot in Berea.

Mitchell set the tone again Saturday.  I think we all agree that it's important to have a bigger back come playoff time, but Mitchell is still needed.  I'd always rather have a 1-2 punch at RB and Mitchell is the other guy in that equation.  He provides the spark like in the second half to the Stagg Bowl last year.  I saw Choat and Nero getting a few carries so that stable is up to 5 (I think?) guys getting carries now.

It's hard to tell much against Etta.  This week will tell us a little more.  Although I'm not sure how much more.  I can't see BW being able to score much.  I just hope they provide a test for the young QB's.

ONU's loss to Utica made that a lot to ask.  Plus, let's be honest, the OAC hasn't really been lighting the world on fire lately.  This looks like another year where we might not get a 2nd team in and if we do they might win a game.

No  way two teams from OAC make playoffs unless someone upsets Mount Union and Mount finishes 9-1.  From what I saw out of BW and JCU, they both lack the power to beat Mount Union.
Got to say that Marietta has some really good players, probably the best talent they have had in years.  They dropped what I felt were two sure TD's, and barely missed making a couple of big plays.  If they improve, I think they could be the surprise of the league's lower tier.

Fulford, although talented and possessing a cannon for an arm, will not be on the field for long with his poor ball security.  Poorman's deep throw was a thing of beauty.  He appears to be a better decision maker than Fulford at the moment.

New DT, Mihoci, was a beast at run stopping.  Did not see any real pass rushing threats from the D-line, but it's early.

I completely agree on pass rush. Both JCU and BW were able to pressure the others QB and niether QB looked good throwing on the move, which may explain the poor passing numbers. If Mount can up the pressure on the QB I would feel alot better moving forward. All in all I thought Etta looked decent compared to years past. Some talent at QB and WR (despite the drops - they were able to get open).

If JCU plays Mount fairly tough in a loss and finishes 8-2 you're saying there's no way they get in?  I agree two losses are tough to overcome in pool C.  Two losses when it's Mount and UWO?  That doesn't seem as outlandish to me.  Wally would need to lend his pool C expertise to tell us the actual answer though!

Good call on Mihoci too.  Those DT's get overlooked often times.  The middle of the D line has been a brick wall against the run.  That's a nice combo with Vidal next to him.

I surely hope JCU does play MUC fairly tough in a loss!
