Admittedly, I wasn't paying the closest attention to Capital back in the day, but does anyone know what exactly happened down there when their coach (I forget his name) left for Saginaw Valley? Obviously, that started a tailspin that bottomed out (finally) a few years ago. How similar was that to the Arth situation? I don't need to start worrying about 2-8 seasons, do I?  ???

You don't have to worry about 2-8 seasons. JCU has too much talent for that. Arth recruited well and the the team well stocked. Arth was such a good recruiter that he was able to talk a good portion of the core strength of his staff to go with him. Arth has the program in great shape and I'm sure JCU will attract a lot of good candidates.

In addition to Arth's strong organizational skills and strong coaching skills Tom is a great recruiter. I think that in the area of recruiting Arth will be missed the most especially if JCU has to go out of arrea to get new. Ia h.  JCU has a lot of attractions  for recruits and Arth maximized that advantage.

I don't see a 2-8 in the future...then again neither did BW 8-) Cap was a different thing than JCU. Collins recruited well and had a good program for like 5 years - aided by the 18 years that Pentello was taking snaps at QB ;D His last year they were 8-3. Bickell came in and sort of lived off of what was there (i.e. didn't really recruit well) so when he left the cupboard was empty. They were 5-5 his first year, then 7-3 (gave Mount a tough game 28-21) and then the wheels came off and they had several coaching changes. A series of 5-5 and 3-7 seasons with too many coaching changes. Bickell was there for 2 (08 and 09), then Stanford for 3 (10, 11, 12) and Candeto for 3 (13, 14, 15). They had identity issues - Collins and Bickell had more of a spread with good QBs (Pentello and Assman), then they shifted to more of a triple option by the time Candeto was there (a Navy guy). The defense, which was pretty good under Collins and Bickell really started to slide. It wasn't an immediate tailspin - but it didn't take long either.

Paging Mr. Mom, paging Mr. Mom.  You have one last line to make in 2016:

What are the odds an ONU running back will be named D3 North Region Player O' The Year sometime in the next three years?

Williams is good. But it depends more on their OL. I checked it and saw 3 (might have been 4) Seniors listed on the oline. Not all starters I'm sure. They have a lot of Sophs and Juniors so are returning a few. I guess he has a shot - but so does David, Fulford, Dwayne Aaron, Moeglin or Kukura from JCU....and maybe even someone from a non-OAC school  :o

However - I also saw that Jason Trusnik signed a contract with the Saints for the last 3 games this season. Glad to see he is still around.

Good for Jason Trusnik.  Christmas money!

I seem to remember another reason for Capital's demise was that there was a change of philosophy with the school administration. There was less focus on athletics thus the team struggled as they moved along.

I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Aside from the players that UMU (and now JCU) puts forth, there are some CCIW underclassmen who will compete for North Region POY - Broc Rutter (NCC QB) for one obvious example.

I have heard that before as well and I just don't understand it. I was teaching at Hiram an eternity ago and remember a number of students saying they were unhappy with changes because "Hiram had shifted their focus towards athletics and away from academics" (A. I am being DEAD serious, and B. Those words were theirs, not mine). Whenever I hear that type of comment I try to see why that is the thought (i.e. is there a drop off in the athletic budget, or a surge, or a "makes no sense hire for HC" - or conversely reaching and overpaying for a bigger name HC) and I can't remember ever finding evidence of it. In Hiram's case it was viewed that way because they re-modeled the stadium and facilities - granted they took away $0 in aid money, no faculty cuts - they just made the facilities look like a small college facilities instead of those found at underfunded and vacant inner cities (Henry Field was a hole!). It was just perception. And, to ease the minds of those academic lovers (me included): No. Hiram has not focused on athletics instead of academics. A quick look at their results will confirm it.

Anyway - if Capital did shift the focus away from athletics...how do we see it (aside from some really poor teams)?

Going from memory I believe it was a new president who either decreased athletic funding or possibly just a shift in focus of how important they felt athletics was towards the school's overall vision.

Its not AN ONU running back, Edward.  There's a specific guy I mentioned who had quite a year in 2016.

Williams is good. But it depends more on their OL.

What makes this kid different is what he does downfield than what the OL is doing for him.  I mean, yes, you need a good OL to get the kind of numbers but the kid made some good tacklers miss in 2016.

EDIT:  By "good tacklers", I mean JCU and UMU defenders.  Between the two games:  42 carries, 241 yards, 1 TD.  Not bad.
