George Mason has a club team, Bridgewater played them last year in lieu of taking a week off with a bye.   However,  Jai Lewis did not play on GMU's club team, although he was an excellent High School player.  The local DC area sports channel highlighted several of Jai's NFL workouts and he was VERY impressive, he's a big guy and would have been a star on ANY D3 football team.

Having club football counts as not participating in football from a draft perspective in my book.

You have to wonder why a guy like Ed Nelson or Jai Lewis, or even Big Baby(can't remember his real name) from LSU play college basketball in the first place.

I do remember hearing that even though he played fullback and linebacker in high school Big Baby was a top defensive line/offensive line recruit.

Anyone think Connor Barwin of Cincinnati can improve his NFL draft stock by giving up playing TE on the UC football team and concentrating on basketball? ;)

Ques. for MUC  people.Does the ATO house still have the spring pig roast?Last one I attended was 20 years ago,saw a buddy of mine get the crap beat out of him by a girl!!!She threw about 20 wild haymakers and everyone landed on his head!!!Then when she had the fight under control, she peppered him with jabs. All of this in front of 100-200 people sitting on the hillside. No one broke it up she just got tired , grabbed her beer and started drinking again as if nothing happened.

Pat,
Regardless of if you feel if the GMU program COUNTS in your book they do compete with other teams on a weekly basis and they are a decent team.   GMU gave BC a fight for quite awhile during last years game.    I was merely noting that GMU does play football,  some people may not be aware of the fact that they do suit up and play some traditional programs.  I'm sure the players that were hurt or had a great time playing in college would consider their time playing football as participating.  As mean as it may sound some MAY consider DIII football nothing more than a club sport depending on their perspective on our division.   (Please note I certainly do not hold that opinion)

wrighthall220-- I believe Pat's opinion was based on a recruiting basis. We had club hockey at Ferris State in Michigan but none of us got nor has anyone ever been recruited to the next level from  a club team. I do find it difficult to believe ANYONE would consider D-3 football a club sport. The President of the NCAA does not present National Championships Trophys to club teams at any level as far as I can recall :-\

My suspicion is quality of coaching is also an issue in club v varsity.

Dude, I VERY specifically said what I was referring to. You should try to read more closely.

Well Nelson and Lewis did alright.  They both got contracts.  In fact, Nelson's is a two year deal.  Now I like Ed Nelson and saw plenty of him in Connecticut on the basketball court but it bugs me that he gets such a good opportunity when he wasn't even considering football as an option until Joe Linta (his agent and a guy I have worked with in the past) was watching him in the NCAA tourney and decided to contact him about playing football.  He thought about it, worked out for about 4 weeks and from that  he gets his shot.  Good for him but I wish it worked so easily for kids in Division III.

RC,

Talent trumps all.  Don't know of many, if any, D3 kids that are 6'8" 270 lbs or 6'9" 295 lbs and athletic.

This is a special shout out to the Wilmington coaching staff for sending all the Ohio High School coaches a recruiting form which included a question about when the athlete would receive his "daploma." Nice work Quakers.

I am just upset.  I declared for the NFL draft in 2002 and still no word.
