Berg doesn't worry me.  The untested nature of Mount does.  That is what could make this interesting.  Haven't been impressed with Mount's O-line nor their corners.  Mount is a significant favorite, but I'm not ready to make plans for late December just yet.

Bingo. Like I said this incarnation of Mount has been tested twice - jcu and UMHB and lost both. The oline has not been as dominant and has showed less improvement from week to week than I would like. The corners have played better each week but still take too many risks in coverage. I will add to that - Fulford. I still have question marks on him. Doesn't always recognize pressure around him and ball security is an issue. I see a fumble or two in the near future. I agree - not ready for late December plans...but mid-December - well  ;D

Showing me something is being within 2 scores in 4th qtr and Mount still has starters in. if Mount has the starters on the bench in the 3rd - well enjoy that banana split.

Yeah you're right, there really only has been one competitive game between the schools in the last ten years, 2013.  That 34-44 game; in which the next week we got destroyed by JCU.  The rest of the games were blowouts, with our only scores really coming against your second teamers.  Its been exciting as a Berg fan for this season, with some big wins after two seasons of some close loses, but as for expectations for this game.  Heidelberg will not win, nor will they probably ever get close to it, it'll probably be that aforementioned banana split, just by a smaller margin than last year. The team is pretty good relative to a lot of D3 ball, but a whole level below Mount.  You guys look at each season with the expectation of a national championship.  For the less elite programs like ourselves, a 8-2 or 9-1 season is a great year and team, relative to our expectations. Can't wait to watch it though.

Yeah I never meant to imply that Berg had a shot at beating Mount I just didn't like the blanket statement of "a top 10 team has no business losing to Heidelberg" I thought it made berg sound like a bottom of the barrel OAC team which they are clearly not.

I wasn't trying to rip on Berg too much, I think they are a top 20-25 team.  But in D3, the difference between top 10 and 11-25 is pretty stark (top 3-4 to 4-10 is normally huge too), imo.  like desertraider said, Berg has come light years from when they were Wilmington, very impressive.  But Mount Union should head into Tiffin and handle Berg fairly easily, just like any of the current top 10 should.  I hope Berg makes the playoffs this year and could very well win a home game, but they are not on the elite or near-elite level of D3.

So why is Poorman not the starting QB and why is Mount Union having such a hard time figuring out they're QB situation? If he's not injured then Poorman should be the starter. It seems like a no brainer to me and I'm not even a Mount fan.

because Fulford is better?  Fulford is far and away the best QB, with the highest upside on the roster, just like last year.  The main intrigue so far has been who is the backup QB week to week and who is going to play JV.  It seems that the coaches are flipping Poorman and Davis each week with Powell being the QB who gets most QB2 snaps.  God forbid Fulford gets hurt, that's where the questions would begin.

raiderpa

Fulford's edge over Poorman is his athletic ability and escape potential.  He is a threat to break a long run at any time.  I have not seen that from Poorman. I also agree that Fulford is a fumble waiting to happen on many occasions. That is his major weakness.
The receiving group at Mount is as good as ever, IMO.  Hill has Sunday hands and routes. Don't know about how he rates speed wise.  Ruth is a threat to return a kick on every play.

Dr. Acula

I would probably also add that Fulford has a better arm than Poorman.

Desertraider

IMHO Poorman is the most  likely to transfer of the Mount QBs. Fulford and Davis are very similar and the offense seems to be set-up for their skill set. Poorman is a solid QB but is limted in terms of mobility. Plus - the past few weeks he is #2 on the 2 deep and its the Sr. transfer that gets the spell time first off the bench or hen Fulford loses his helmet. Poorman has to be a tad frustrated in his lack of PT. But - Fulford is as good a passer, better deep and adds his ability to run. No brainer and no problem with QB chart.

The WRs are really good. I wasn't sure if Hill could be a Sunday guy until he made some in traffic catches the past couple of weeks. I have been saying for years - every WR at the college level is "fast" (some more so than others) and they can all catch (the ones that can't aren't called WRs) - but if they can catch in traffic across the middle, or take the hit and hold on, they have a shot. What I need to start watching is his blocking downfield. I think that is what gave Pierre the edge. He had the speed, the hands, made catches in traffic, and had a ton of film showing him leading a convoy for Nate the Great 40 yards downfield. Even Dungy said they noticed his blocking and were impressed.

Roll Raider ~ Roll!

FYI....Ruth returns one this week.

Was Poorman the qb that LK Flew to Florida to see in person? I remember hearing a lot of hype about a certain Florida Qb prospect and thought it was Poorman.

Yep - that's the one. Look he is good but he is a pocket QB.

Yes and it's common knowledge that LK hates to fly.

I saw Poorman play last year and looked ok but didn't wow me with anything. Hate to use the term but he seemed a game manager. I remember when Jorris first got the start and I saw him throw deep - Wow! Great arm. Or when Micheli got flushed from the pocket and impressed with his running. Kevin Burke looked good in alot of games...until the 4th qtr when he lit it up (I have the right to ignore the 2 UWW Staggs). Point is every Mount QB from Ballard (sorry but as far as I go back) to Scott that is considered a great had that Wow moment. Poorman kind of reminded me of Seaman: without pressure, in good conditions, with open recievers - he looked good. I just never saw either one look great.

Fulford to Ruth on a seam route.  70 yd TD on the first play.  7-0.

3 and out and Mount takes over near midfield.  Not the start Berg wanted.

Fulford scampers in from 6 yds.  14-0.  Herrington with a key 4th down catch to keep the drive alive.

Berg answers.  14-7.  Nice pitch and catch with Stoyle and Morris.  Mount hurts their cause with a pair of 15 yard penalties on the drive including a bonehead roughing the passer on what would have been 3rd and 8.

Hill gets involved.  34 yd grab on 3rd down and a 17 yd acrobatic TD the next play.  21-7.  I feel bad for these defenses.  It's going to be a long day.

HALF.  42-7.  Mount is passing with ease (311 yds).  Ruth and Hill are both over 100 yds already.  They've been very balanced, but with limited success on the ground so far.  Fulford has been the most effective runner.  Other than the scoring drive the defense has been excellent (110 yds).
