"But, at the end of the day, it's really not serving the game well if you don't play your hardest."

Here's what I don't like about a comment like that. St. Thomas point differential by quarter:

1st: +121
2nd: +156
3rd: +119
4th: +31

Obviously, they aren't playing at the same level in the 4th that they are early on. So don't trot out that you're doing a disservice to the game by not playing super hard as some defense for a touchdown you score up 91 points with 7 seconds to go. Just say "I wanted to do this, this is how I run my program, and I don't care what you think"

So which is it: obviously running up the score? Or not playing super hard?

The difference in the 3rd and 4th quarter is the standard stuff a coach does in a blowout. Playing 3rd and 4th stringers (or beyond for home games, when 100+ kids get in the game) and mostly keeping the ball on the ground to stretch the clock while letting the backups and underclassmen who are in the game keep playing hard.

it's both.  Glen didn't run it up all year until the final game when he thought a 100-0 game would impress the playoff committee to give his team a #1 seed.  Doesn't look like his strategy worked.

He's aware enough to know that he wasn't getting a top seed in the tournament carrying that loss to Stout.

Caruso probably could have scored 120. He certainly could have taken a knee up 91-0.

To me, that's why it's silly to try and rationalize anything by talking about playing your hardest or whatever. Why get drawn into the debate over when exactly you pulled your starters, and what plays you called, and who should have done what when? Just pull a Jack Nicholson and move onto the next question:

"I run my unit they way I run my unit."

So he ran up 97 on a former assistant?  Wow, what a horse turd.  Did the former assistant do something to make him angry??
Hopefully what goes around comes around.  Supposedly LK ran a score against someone who had really pasted a really weak squad a week or two prior, just to teach a lesson.  But that is heresay and I have no corroboration on that.

All indications are that they have a really good relationship. I'm really curious what Coach Kilian would say, but I imagine he's not taking it too personally as he probably has a similar mentality to Caruso.

He certainly can't have been surprised. Caruso is consistent in his approach.

Does that absolve this ass hat from his boorish behavior?  Just because "he is consistent"?  I have to believe Caruso is burning bridges in the coaching community faster than he is building them.

(Notice I used ass hat AND boorish in the same sentence.  Now that is vocabulary at many levels!)

I guess that's for you to be concerned about.

The consistent approach does somewhat come into play, because it's not just to rub it in anyone's faces or to run up the score. It helps explain it and I like to understand where he is coming from. He's certainly different and I don't agree with everything he says and does, but almost everything I've seen up close from him has been pretty impressive and I don't think he really needs to concern himself with my opinions. I'm obviously biased and drinking the purple kool-aid though, so you are welcome to take my opinions with a grain of salt.

It's back to the cave after this, but consistently behaving like a jackass doesn't make him any less of a jackass.

He's still got his starters in and is still throwing up 60 points.  There's absolutely no reason to not take a knee with 7 seconds left, 1st and goal...except to rub it in your opponent's face.

If there is ever a fight during or after a game where he "remains consistent" Glen Caruso is responsible for it.

Stay classy, maybe he can actually get to 100 next time.

Oh stop it.  He didn't say a damn word about Larry Kehres.

If I say all guys who wear red-&-white striped pants look silly (just spitballing here - I would never actually say such a thing, of course)  BUT I NEVER MENTION THE VENERABLE NAME OF WALLY WABASH), does that mean I believe Wally Wabash looks sartorially resplendent in red-&-white striped pants since I never cited Wally Wabash SPECIFICALLY as looking silly?

(And, again, I'm just pulling this hypothetical random example out of the ether.  I could have used something else, say, um, a pale purple suit.)

And on that note - +K for Toph. Glen is an a$$hat. He is also many other things I am sure - but the kids may be reading.

And to think, there was a time we all thought no one would ever top KC Keeler as enemy #1.  Yup, that Caruso guy sure has a way of bringing people together.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

Dr. Acula

Caruso is a jerk, but at least he gives everyone else in D3 a common enemy.  He's like a modern day KC Keeler complete with the Stagg Bowl performances.  He just needs a few more D1 transfers and some shades to really drive it home.

Well I am disappointed if it is true Mount Union isn't nominating a player for the Gag. Obviously, Sophomore D. Fulford should be a nominee. Having watched a lot a great QB's over the years have phenomenal years, he still had one the very best regular seasons ever by a Purples QB. Unreal and incredible. Not even the Great Number 7 (moment of silence) had a sophomore year like this kid. But maybe it's because they have a long standing policy of not nominating sophomores, that would not surprise me. Anyone know?
Got my tickets for the Hall of Fame dinner in New York on Dec.5. Payton Manning, Adrian Peterson, Marshall Faulk, Steve Spurrier, and our own Larry Kehres.

If Mount nominated anyone, my choice would be Charlie Dear.  He has been the leader of the Defense and is the most consistent Raider on the field, IMO.  I also respect the fact the he returned for the year and did so for his team, not himself.  I know nothing of his academics or community service which is part of the selection criteria.  That triad of academics, service and football makes the Gagliardi award the best college football honor going.

I see that Washington and Lee averages 421 yards rushing a game.  Should be a great challenge to Mount's defense, which I feel is pretty stout against the run.  What do you think is the over/under for yards gained rushing this week for the Generals??

I'm going to say W&L gets close to 200 yards rushing and about 50 passing. You don't give up many yards rushing, but I figure by the 3rd and 4th quarters we will make some headway against whoever you put on the field. Don't ask me how many I think we'll get in the first half. I just don't want to say...

2017 OAC Playoff Pick-Em spreads are posted.  All are welcome to play.

And I'm glad I was not reading these posts as I set the Eureka-St. Thomas spread.  Had it over 70 and was tempted to push it to 100.5 before my rational brain kicked in.  Hope Caruso's does.

May all 32 teams play up to their ability and please no major injuries.  This is the best time of the year!   :)

that's probably a pretty good estimate. and i expect W&L to break at least one of those runs for a TD.

With a playoff roster, you're not going to get many layers deep on the Mount Union depth chart.  This is going to be hard for the Generals all day.

I actually think W & L will have some success in the first half until the Mount D adjusts to a scheme they really never see.  They will blow some plays up with tackles in the backfield, but W & L is not going to abandon what they do, so I am estimating they will have some chunk runs mixed in with the losses.  As far as scores, IF W & L can pop a few option #3 passes off of the option read, I think they could punch in a score or two.

If Mount's offense is playing as expected, I would guess a 49-14 type score.

It's not only about on field production.  The Gagliardi Award also includes Academics and Community Service.
