I've been on Post Patterns for years and just found this board. I'm actually a bit surprised that such a place exists, given that UMU alumni aren't known to be especially well-acquainted with reading and writing. Kudos on proving the doubters wrong. By the way, what's with all the hate for Coach Caruso?

Reading and writing might not be our things, but we are decent at math....

I don't know. I'm pretty good at both reading and writing. I even have a PhD - but am not insecure enough to use it in my username...on a sports board. I even taught at Mount and can therefore say with confidence they are pretty good at reading and writing too. For example if Mount's mission statement had a segment on dignity, oh I don't know let's say something along the lines of: "We respect the dignity of each person and value the unique contributions that each brings to the greater mosaic of the university community" (https://www.stthomas.edu/mission/), they would probably read that as "grinding an opponents face into the turf for no reason and embarrassing them for amusement in the hopes of bringing attention to yourself is the opposite of respecting dignity.

Thanks for the feedback. Maybe you can help answer a few questions:

1. Do they actually call what the faculty does at UMU teaching?
2. UMU has a mission statement? I didn't know community colleges were into that sort of thing.
3. Since when did opposing football teams become members of the UST community?

Pretty sad a MIAC team hasn't beat a lowly Ohio Community College team since 2003.

Memo to OAC posters:  Reverend MIAC, PhD is not a reverend (he posted a couple of years ago that he got it off the internet so as to preside at a friend's wedding) and I seriously doubt he is a PhD (though he did spell it correctly! ;D)

I actually kinda like the dude, but find his academic attacks extremely obnoxious.  I especially find his attacks on community colleges offensive.  While I'm glad there are places like Harvard or Caltech, UST ain't them.  And I'm at least as impressed with places like CCs or Berea who will take nearly anyone who comes along and give them the opportunity to rise as high as they are able to go.  Should a kid's life be over if at 18 he can't do well on the ACT/SAT?

There's no denying UMU has a great football program. Heck, I even admire UMU off the field. It's refreshing to see a university emphasize athletics while forgoing all pretense of academic rigor or expectation. To be clear, I have no problem with community colleges. UMU should be proud that it's one of the finest in the country...   ;)

For the record, St Thomas recently launched a junior college to support and encourage many of the non-traditional students in the Twin Cities area, and allow them to get a solid education. The Rev has been a big supporter of this initiative.

According to the Mount Union Wikipedia page (extremely reliable source, by the way), this guy graduated from Mount:

Mark A. Price - Geologist known for research utilizing apparent thermal inertia on the surface of Mars

I also graduated from Mount and can understand roughly 5 words in that sentence. So overall the school seems to be churning out some high quality scholars.

That's true. As an aside, we have four hours left in Tommie Give Day. We've almost reached our goal of raising $550K in 24 hours. If any UMU fans, especially those who like to talk about mission statements, are feeling generous, now is your time to support a future scholar.

Yes, it is sad but what a victory it was.  I find that the glow still warms me like the last ebb of the sun during a south pacific sunset.

Is Mount playing St Thomas or Washington & Lee this week?
National Champions - 13: 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2015, 2017

Mr. Ypsi

I am especially sensitive to academic slights to schools giving second chances, or taking virtually all comers.  Son #2 was a mess as a teenager (I used to joke that I had a defense attorney on speed-dial ;)).  He would have been expelled from his high school, except we withdrew him first (and had an attorney suggest that expelling a student who had already withdrawn might not be wise).  (The expulsion would have been for marijuana possession on school grounds; I pointed out to the oblivious folks at the school that of course he was in possession on school grounds since he hadn't yet left them - where the f**k did they think he bought the stuff?!  Clueless morons!)

After about a year, he enrolled in an alternative HS, graduated, and went to the local CC, where he was consistently on the dean's list.  He then went to Eastern Michigan U., was again on the dean's list, and is now both a research assistant and teaching assistant while going for his master's in biology.  I could not possibly be prouder of the kid!

Anyone who wants to mock schools that give kids like #2 son a chance can go to hell, in my humble opinion.

Hey now... leave the Generals out of this and go play with the St. Thomas people. I'm just sitting here with my popcorn enjoying this part of the experience. Probably more entertaining than the game will be so it's not like I'm going to get into it with you guys...

+k to reverse what might have been a spiteful -k from today's earlier shenanigans. This is a great story of second chances and much appreciated. I quite enjoyed today's banter and plan to convert everyone's UST hatred into IVs to inject straight into my veins when I'm feeling a little down. I hope everyone can keep this football chatter in perspective and there are not any hard feelings (except those directed towards my coach, which I know he would not too concerned about)

Oh that's right, I forgot. The Christian ethic According to Tommie Theology only applies to other Tommies. So the Tommies support diversity among Tommies. They support Respect for other Tommies. They support dignity directed at other Tommies. Like a little club - if your with us you're great, if not well.. How very Christian of you. I am sure your Seminaries are proud.
