Im not sure what to think of the game tomorrow. I feel case will be like Heidelberg with better defense.

Better hope they beat themselves then  ;D

"The only acceptable usages of the University's name are 'Case Western Reserve University,' 'Case Western Reserve' and 'CWRU.'  Please refrain from using any other form of the name, including 'Case' or 'Case Western,' on scoreboards, websites, broadcasts, articles, etc."

Is this really a memo that the university has put out? This just seems odd to tell others what to call your school. It's not like people are slandering their name.

Anyway, I feel that CASE is an opportunistic and balanced offense that has the capability to run or throw. IMO, if they want to beat MOUNT, they have to keep them at 21 points or under and create turnovers. I'm not sure I see that happening with a clear weather day like it's expected.

I'm guessing it's part of their internal style guide that most schools have. They are usually intended for faculty, students or anyone representing the University to try and keep branding consistent. Probably also includes logo usage, proper fonts and colors on documents etc.

Probably also supposed to be followed by news outlets and publications as well.

I agree it's a matter of brand control.

In Indianapolis we have IUPUI, which for the longest time people called "UuuEEE PuuEE".  It wasn't derogatory in any sense, but it made the school sound less than its big brothers at Bloomington and West Lafayette and was seen as degrading the brand.  After years and years of ignoring this informal moniker for the school, the administration worked long and hard to stamp it out.  To that end I would suspect that there were a legion of emails sent out similar to the one from Case Western Reserve.

Now younger folks wouldn't even know what you were referring to if you referred to it by that name.

It is to reflect both institutions that came together to form CWRU.  A few years back there was an effort to re-brand as "Case" but that got WRU alums (like me) up in arms and it was abandoned.  I suspect in another ten years after most of the WRU alums have gone, it will revert to Case. For quite a while after the federation the teams were referred to as Case Reserve which is still in the fight song.

I always type CWRU, but at times will say "Case."

Say what you want BUT - IT'S STUPID! Why, some may ask? Well because I just watched the 1st half of the Case v. Westminster game and saw several coaches wearing jackets on the sideline with "CASE" on them. Same for students wearing sweatshirts and jackets and hats "CASE". Yep saw some with CWRU....but if you sell merchandise that says CASE you kinda have to accept people referring to you as CASE. In the CASE of IUPUI...doubt they sold merchandise that said  "UuuEEE PuuEE" and then told people not to say it. So if CASE wants peopel to stop using CASE...then stop selling CASE gear. There. I have made my CASE! ;D

Now the real reason I came in to post. CASE looks good. I watched the Westminster game, 1st half, and have a better idea about  them.

QB: Smart. Good arm long, accurate with time. Great pocket awareness - scrambles out of pressure before he is swarmed. Gets rid of ball to avoid sacks (one thing Fulford needs work on). However, pressure up the middle and he seems to like moving backwards (did it twice - though got rid of ball both times). When flushed - he makes the decision to run and does it. No second thoughts. Good runner in the Greg Micheli style.

WR: A lot of 4 WR sets, similar to Mount with use of slot. WR are quick - not sure on speed. Not very big but get open. Good hands, made some great catches deep (2 reminded me of Tim Kennedy).

RB: Burke. This kid is good. Reminds me of Nemeth - hits hole hard, moves forward, falls forward. No wasted movements, no dancing. Has power between tackles and is quick to corner. Good speed and breaks tackles.

Oline: Looks solid. I don't know much about Westminster but the QB had time to let plays develop. Set a nice pocket and open some good holes for run game.

As an offense they are quick to the line. Snap, play, snap, play. Very reminiscent of Mount at tempo. Mount had trouble when jcu switched to this and got flagged for 12 men (twice?). Could be an issue with switching personnel.

On D
Dline: gets good pressure with 3 or 4. Good at stuffing the run in the middle.
LB: Good speed and flow to ball. Really good tacklers in open field.
DBs: This seems to be a weak spot (Uh - Oh). The corners don't seem that quick and were beat quite a bit - but the pressure got there before the pass. Westminster had success with the 10-15 patterns and had open WR in the seams during most of what I watched.

CASE likes to use LBs and a corner on blitz packages - this left wide open lanes on sidelines (they got caught twice and gave up big yards). When the LB(s) blitz - they have little to cover the slot and middle routes.

Seriously - watching this game was like watching Mount...especially on Offense. Interesting. Any thoughts from CASE, CWRU, Case Western Reserve, or Spartan fans is welcomed.

BTW: I got a letter from CWRU inviting me to a conference last year. The letterhead had a big 14pt "CASE" and underneath in like 8 pt was Western Reserve University

Yeah, exactly -- and within the past decade, "Case" was on the list of acceptable names. Typically when a school switches on its list of approved names, we hold back for a while to see if they will switch again.

Hadn't really thought too much about a score for tomorrow. 48 - 13 seems reasonable. I could live with that. I'm sure that made your day. Anywhere around that score is OK!

desertraider

You sure do have a way of making your point on the CASE naming issue. How about we refer to it thusly: "The former Case School of Applied Science" or, to be a little more recent, "The former Case Institute of Technology". How about just that school next to The Cleveland Clinic?
I will simply refer to them as "the team we are playing tomorrow".
Ahhh, much ado about nothing!

My brother chose Air Force Academy over Case back in the day. When asked why he said "seriously, Colorado Springs and fly airplanes or go to a school in the crappy part of Cleveland"? I guess "School in the Crappy Part of Cleveland" wasn't the look Case was going for...so Mount is not playing SCPC. I will opt for opponent in Round 2. And I will caution - Pitt had no chance today against Miami...none. But no one told Pitt.

Last time I was there it looked like nice neighborhoods and the botanical gardens. Maybe it's developed a bit since your brother was looking at schools.

As far as Smart couldn't you just assume that about pretty anyone playing for Case?
